Objectives Discuss the value of reporting weekly COVID-19 vaccination dataDescribe how facilities can track weekly COVID-19 vaccination of healthcarepersonnel (HCP)Review data reporting in detail2

How can I use these data?3

Why Should You Use NHSN? Facilities participating in NHSN can report weekly COVID-19 vaccinationdata through the Healthcare Personnel Safety (HPS) Component The weekly COVID-19 vaccination modules are designed to allow reportingof vaccination percentages: Weekly reporting is currently optionalConsistent reporting over time within a single healthcare facilityComparable across facilitiesTracking and reporting allows identification of vaccination coverage gapsand targeting improvement efforts4

Putting Data into Action Facilities can use data to obtain a better picture of COVID-19vaccination at their facility Monitor vaccination trends over timeo Example: Review how quickly cumulative vaccination coverage ratesincrease each week for HCP groups Identify HCP groups with lower vaccination rateso Example: A facility may find that vaccination rates are lower amongtechnicians than among nurses Improve vaccination trackingo Example: Implement automated tracking systems5

Putting Data into Action (cont.) Data from the HCP Vaccination Module can inform decisionmaking Provide jurisdictions with critical information that can guide COVID-19planning and implementation including any issues with vaccine supply Use data to inform various public health emergency responseactivitieso Compare vaccine coverage with vaccine distribution data to assist federalplanningo U.S. Department of Health and Human Services COVID-19 Tracking Systems6

Which data can be reported each week?7

Question #1: Number of HCP eligible to have worked at the facilityRequired: Report the total number of HCP each week Total number of HCP that were eligible to have worked at this healthcarefacility for at least 1 day during the week of data collection Include all individuals who have been identified to receive vaccination, not justthose who have been prioritized firstInclude workers on sick leave, maternity leave, and vacationInclude individuals who work part-time as well as full-time8

Question #1: Number of HCP eligible to have worked at the facilityOptional: Report subtotals by HCP categoryEnvironmental servicesFront-line persons who clean patient rooms and all areas in ahealthcare facilityNursesRegistered nurses and licensed practical/ vocational nursesMedical assistants and certifiednursing assistantsMedical assistants and certified nursing assistantsRespiratory therapistsCertified medical professionals who specialize in knowledge and useof mechanical ventilation as well as other programs for respiratorycarePharmacists and pharmacytechniciansIndividuals serving as pharmacists or pharmacy techniciansPhysiciansAttending physicians (MD, DO) and physician fellows9

Question #1: Number of HCP eligible to have worked at the facility(cont.)Optional: Report subtotals by HCP categoryOther licensed independentpractitioners(advanced practicenurses; physician assistants)Licensed independent practitioners, specifically advanced practicenurses and physician assistants; Advanced practice nurses includenurse practitioners, nurse midwives, clinical nurse specialists, andnurse anesthetists.Other HCPPersons providing care, treatment, or services at the facility, regardless of clinical responsibility or patient contact, who were notreported in the HCP categories listed above. This also includes medical, nursing, or other health professionals, temporary workers, students, interns, medical residents, trainees,or volunteers.10

Question #1: Number of HCP eligible to have worked at the facilityKey Points Same denominator used for COVID-19 and influenza weekly vaccination modules HCP who work in two or more facilities should be included in each facility in whichthey are eligible to have worked Same definition of HCP eligible to work at the facilitySpecific HCP categoriesIndividuals can become exposed or expose others in any facility in which they workHCP categories are mutually exclusive Each individual should be counted in only one category11

Question #2: HCP receiving COVID-19 vaccineRequired: Report the cumulative number of total vaccinated HCP Step 1: Select a COVID-19 vaccine from the drop-down box Pfizer-BioNTech Moderna12

Question #2: HCP receiving COVID-19 vaccine (cont.)Required: Report the cumulative number of total vaccinated HCP Step 2: Enter cumulative number of eligible HCP who received only one dose ofvaccineStep 3: Enter cumulative number of eligible HCP who received dose 1 and dose 2of vaccineStep 4: If HCP received another type of vaccine: Select the vaccine from the drop-down box Repeat steps 1-313

Question #2: HCP receiving COVID-19 vaccine (cont.)Optional: Report cumulative number of vaccinated HCP for specificcategories Same HCP categories asquestion #1If entering vaccination data forspecific HCP categories HCP receiving vaccine forspecific HCP categories mustnot exceed total number ofHCP receiving vaccine14

Question #2: HCP receiving COVID-19 vaccine (cont.)Key Points Include HCP receiving COVID-19 vaccine atthe facility or elsewhere (such as apharmacy) HCP receiving vaccine elsewhere shouldprovide documentation of vaccination, whichincludes vaccine typeIf documentation is not provided, reportthese HCP in question #3.3 (unknown COVID19 vaccination status)NHSN automatically calculates number ofHCP completing vaccination courses15

Question #2: HCP receiving COVID-19 vaccineKey Points (cont.) Cumulative Data Facilities should report cumulative data each week (rather than only new data)o Example: Week 1: 10 physicians received only dose 1 of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Week 2: 5 more physicians received only dose 1 of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine Facility should report 15 physicians received only dose 1 of ModernaCOVID-19 vaccine by the end of week 216

Question #3: HCP with other conditionsRequired: Report cumulative number of eligible HCP with a medicalcontraindicationOptional: Report cumulative number of eligible HCP with the followingconditions: Offered but declined COVID-19 vaccineUnknown COVID-19 vaccination statusHistory of laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection17

Question #3: HCP with other conditionsKey Points Same HCP categories as question #1If entering data for specific HCP categories Number of HCP with other conditions in specific HCP categories must not exceed totalnumber of HCP with other conditions18

Question #4: COVID-19 vaccine(s) supplyRequired: Answer two questions on vaccine supply at the facility eachweek Facilities enrolled as a COVID-19 vaccine provider Receipt of any COVID-19 vaccine(s) by the end of the week of data collectionSufficient COVID-19 vaccine supply to vaccinate facility’s prioritized HCP by the end of theweek of data collectionCDC encourages facilities to contact their state or local health jurisdiction If there is insufficient supply of COVID-19 vaccine availableIf facility is interested in becoming a COVID-19 vaccine provider19

Question #5: Adverse events following COVID-19 vaccine(s)Required: Total number of HCP with adverse events Report clinically significant COVID-19 adverse events Clinically significant adverse events include:oo Vaccine administration errorsSerious adverse events (such as death, life-threatening conditions, inpatienthospitalization, or persistent disability/incapacity)Other clinically significant adverse events identified in Emergency UseAuthorization fact sheets or prescribing information Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccinesooCases of Multisystem Inflammatory SyndromeCases of COVID-19 that result in hospitalization or death, that are reported to the vaccinemanufacturer20

Question #5: Adverse events following COVID-19 vaccine(s) (cont.)Required: Total number of HCP with adverse events Enter data on total number of HCP with clinically significant COVID-19 adverseevents identified this week (not cumulative) Report data for HCP in question #1Report data for each specific COVID-19 vaccineoooSpecific COVID-19 vaccine(s) selected in question #2 will auto-populate on the data entryscreenReport adverse events to any vaccine doseReport adverse events to vaccine given at this facility or elsewhere21

Question #5: Adverse events following COVID-19 vaccine(s) (cont.)Required: Total number of HCP with adverse events22

Question #5: Adverse events following COVID-19 vaccine(s) (cont.)Optional: Report number of employees and non-employees withadverse events Enter data on employees and non-employees with clinically significant COVID19 adverse events identified this week (not cumulative)If entering data for employees and non-employees Number of employees and non-employees with clinically significant COVID-19adverse events must not exceed the total number of HCP with clinically significantCOVID-19 adverse events23

Question #5: Adverse events following COVID-19 vaccine(s) (cont.)Key Points Healthcare providers should comply with the Vaccine Adverse Event ReportingSystem (VAERS) reporting requirements Described in emergency use authorizations or prescribing informationReport adverse events to VAERS at: https://vaers.hhs.gov/reportevent.html Enter your NHSN OrgID in Box 26 of the VAERS form24
