2020 NEWSLETTER

A MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN 2020I’m humbled by the outstanding work that our faculty, residents,APPs, and nurses did (and continue to do) to insure top qualitypatient care while assuring the safety of the staff.Preparing for and implementing ourDepartment and hospital responseto COVID-19 has been an adventure.Early on there was an incredible amountof effort spent developing responseplans, which proved challenging giventhe rapid evolution of knowledge andoperational changes. Although theplanning has slowed down, we continueto see waxing and waning COVID EDvisits and hospitalizations. However,I’m humbled by the outstanding workthat our faculty, residents, APPs, andnurses did (and continue to do) to insuretop quality patient care while assuringthe safety of the staff. The entireDepartment really stepped up to meetthe needs of our patients and institution.Like many of you, we have learned anincredible amount on this journey butlook forward to a post-pandemic world.Dr. Gratton stepped down asDepartment Chair on December 31,2019 after serving admirably for 13years. He continues to serve as theAssociate Chief Medical Officer forTruman Medical Centers. Fortunately(or unfortunately he would say) hestepped down in time to assume therole of the Chief Medical Officer of theIncident Commands Center for TrumanMedical Centers response to COVID19. He, along with Dr. Steele, has putin countless hours over the past monthsaddressing our institutional COVIDresponse. Words can’t begin to expressthe amount of gratitude that we havefor their efforts. We are very fortunateto have had Dr. Gratton’s leadership asChair and continue to benefit from hiswisdom, logical problem solving, andwitty sense of humor. Thank you Dr.Gratton for the mentorship, leadershipand service to the Department andTruman Medical Centers. From an operations standpoint wewere proud to achieve American Collegeof Surgeons Level 1 trauma center status. This accomplishment was the result ofyears of hard work and effort by multipleindividuals and the Departments ofEmergency Medicine and Surgery.Specifically, I would highlight Drs.Carney and Sullivan’s efforts from theEMS and ED perspectives. We continueto be a Missouri state certified STEMIcenter. Dr. O’Rourke continues to do anexcellent job in his role as ED operationsdirector. Under his leadership and thatof Gina Rosser, ED nursing director, wecontinue to improve throughput andcontinue to have historically low “leftwithout being seen” patient numbers.Karen Manley retired from her role asDepartment administrative assistant andwe welcomed Ms. Carrie Carter to thisposition. The residency program remainsstrong and just oriented the 45th classof residents! We continue to have 11residents/year in a 1,2,3 format. Dr. AmyStubbs remains the residency programdirector but there have been someother recent changes in the residencyleadership. Drs. Emily Hillman andKevin O’Rourke were named associateprogram directors and Dr. MelanieCamejo was named the assistantprogram director. Ms. Christina Maynecontinue to serve as the residencyprogram coordinator. Jayna Ross retiredin March after serving as residency andstudent clerkship coordinators for 34years. Jayna was herself an institution inour department; she single handedly heldeverything together and kept us all ontrack. She will be deeply missed but wewish her well in her retirement. Thankyou Jayna for everything you did for us!Dr. Camejo continues to serve asthe EM student clerkship director. Her clerkship planning, response toCOVID, and advocacy for the medicalstudents was (and is) much appreciated. The clerkship continues to be highlyrated and Dr. Camejo continues to beinnovative in her approach to medicalstudent education. She remains thefaculty advisor for the EmergencyMedicine Interest Group and continuesto offer an annual emergency medicineprocedural simulation experience formedical students. We also welcomed Ms.Lara Maisch this spring who became theEM student clerkship coordinator. The Department faculty remainacademically productive and we havethree full-time research coordinators. We continue to be a site for theEMERGEency ID Net research network. We have multiple COVID-19 relatedresearch projects that are ongoing inaddition to other faculty and residentresearch projects. The faculty continue to remainvery busy with other administrativeresponsibilities. We appreciated all his innovative ideas and contributions to ourDepartment and residency program. We wish him and his family well on the next chapter intheir lives.Under the new leadership of Virginia Wilson, the Program Director, and Dr. Carney, theMedical Director, the UMKC EMS Education Program is doing well and navigating throughthe challenges of COVID-19 as well. The Paramedic Program continues its accreditation by theCommission on Accreditation of Allied Health Programs. We appreciate the support of our part-time prn faculty and our alumni. With your help anddedication we are able to provide our residents with a valued “mock oral boards” experience andwe appreciate the shifts that are worked. Your community perspective and experiences are greatlyappreciated by the residents, so thank you! Lastly, we certainly appreciate all financial donationsfrom alumni. Truman MedicalCenter, Department of EmergencyMedicine (chosen by EM Faculty)Abigail Halleron, M.D.This Kentuckian was born in Louisvilleand raised on bluegrass music and friedchicken. While I grew to enjoy the artisticand contemporary aspects to the Midwestculture in the city, I don’t forget my roots.I love any craft I can get my hands on,spending time outdoors, and spendingtime with loved ones. Lately that hasmeant just painting on my porch. I alwaysprefer playing sports to watching them. And yes you can catch me outside in barefeet. I have two cats, Asa and Bartleby, and Cali (my Australian shepherd whocan’t figure out if she would rather be acat or a human). I met my fiancé whileworking in the ED on an away rotation.I handed her a flush and she took myheart. I interviewed in the Midwest andsoutheast largely and I was looking fora place that felt like both, like home.Everyone at Truman was so genuinelyamicable and easy to talk to while thecity was a perfect mix of big city withsouthern amenities. It felt like home andnow it officially is! And thank goodness.I was born in Abilene, Texas and mostlygrew up in Los Alamitos, California(suburb of Los Angeles). I completed myundergraduate pre-med at Arizona StateUniversity (Go Devils!) where I was amember of the Barrett Honors Collegeprogram and graduated with a B.S. ingenetics, cell and developmental biologywith a minor in history. In betweenundergrad and medical school, I workedfor a year as a scribe where I had my firstexperiences in the emergency departmentand I haven’t looked back since. Igraduated from Western University ofHealth Sciences in Pomona, Californiawith my D.O. degree in 2018 and wasfortunate enough to match to ourfantastic EM residency program here inKansas City. I knew after interviewinghere that this program was a great fit forme and the past 2 years have confirmedthat. I was also lucky enough to meet mygirlfriend Jamie here in Kansas City fairlyquickly after moving here. When not at work, I like to spend timewith Jamie and our two German shepherddogs Otto and Luna, and enjoy all thegood eats and activities that KansasCity has to offer. I also enjoy homeimprovement projects, getting outdoorsto golf, hike, kayak/paddleboarding andgoing to Chiefs games and other sportingevents.I have been extremely proud to be a partof TMC EM for the past 2 years and Ilook forward to the honor of servingour program as chief resident this year. Ican think of no better place to train tobe an ER doc than our program and Iam thrilled to play a role in making ourprogram even better. After residency, I amlooking to work in the community for afew years before transitioning to academicmedicine.Matthew Cook, M.D.I am originally from SpringfieldMissouri, but I spent part of myelementary school years in the KansasCity area. Growing up I spent mostof my time playing sports, going toTable Rock Lake with my family, andgenerally getting into trouble outside. Ihave a twin brother who is 10 minutesolder than me and, although he issmarter and better looking, I will alwaysbe younger than him. After realizingI did not have the talent nor the workethic to play any sports professionally Idecided to go to college. I attended theUniversity of Missouri with the originalintent to get a degree in computerscience. However, after my first calculusclass, I chose to pursue a career inthe sciences and got a biology degree.I graduated uncertain about what Iwanted to do with my future, and got ajob as an EMT in my hometown. Thiswas a terrific experience and motivatedme to return to school. After 1 yearaway, I eagerly returned to Mizzoufor medical school. Med school flewby, I spent most of my time readingin the various coffee shops aroundColumbia, Missouri. In my final year Imet my now girlfriend, Sara, who wasa 2nd year medical student at Mizzouat the time. We met during the timeI was interviewing for residency, andI was incredibly excited to match to aresidency program in nearby KansasCity. She is now in her ophthalmologyresidency in Kansas City! I have lovedliving in KC for the past 2 years, andlove training at this program. Sincestarting residency, I have developeda love for ultrasound. I am currentlypursuing an ultrasound fellowship andhope to have a career in academicemergency medicine.3

ED OPERATIONSRESIDENCY PROGRAMICt has been a wild and weird year for Emergency Medicine and the whole world. As a department, we cared for 61,500 patients last year, of which 10,600 wereadmitted. As Kansas City tried to get rid of diversion, we were on high capacity alertfor less than 8 hours/month and EMS rewarded us with 14,850 patients. We continueto utilize APPs as a Provider-in-Triage and our Left without Being Seen was 2.4%.The median time to being seen by a provider was 10 minutes. Our annual statistics are impressive when you consider that patient volumewas down 40% during the peak of COVID stay-at-home orders. We saw 4300 lesspatients in March through June this year compared to the same time last year, butstill maintained the same annual volume. We are excited to welcome Dr. Brandon Elder back to the department in August, after losing Dr. Inboriboon to Chicago.Dr. Typher has been named as the inaugural resident liaison to the OperationsCommittee. It’s been a fun year and I look forward to working with everyone to accomplishmore things in the next year.Kevin O’Rourke, MD Director of ED Operations4hange has been the theme of theyear for 2019-2020. From leadershipchanges to a worldwide pandemic, thisyear was memorable. One change weall feel greatly is the retirement of ourbeloved Ms. Jayna Ross who supportedour program for over thirty years! Sheis greatly missed; her steadfastnessand gentle guidance helped shape ourprogram and the lives of many. We wantto welcome Lara Maisch who has takenover Jayna’s position. She started right atthe beginning of COVID and has donea great job learning both old and newsropes as we all deal with new changes. We also say farewell to our Associate PD,Dr. Charlie Inboriboon who accepted aposition at UIC, closer to his family. Hisnovel curricular ideas and IT expertisehelped our program evolve, his genuinecompassion and kindness were examplesfor all of us. UMKC-EM is stronger forthe both of them. The wonderful Drs.Emily Hillman and Kevin O’Rourkecontinue on with our leadership teamas Associate Program Directors. We arealso lucky to have Dr. Melanie Camejo, current Clerkship Director, take on theadditional role of Assistant ProgramDirector. Despite all these changes,we carry on our storied tradition withstellar administrative support, innovativefaculty, and most of all, our amazingresidents. Some residency highlights from thispast year include:· We incorporated wellness andnon-traditional topics into multipledidactic days this year! Puppy therapy, financial wellness, yoga, cooking class, and mindfulness were all woven into ourcurriculum this year.· Providing staff for the medical tentsat the Superbowl Champions Parade andCelebration. Go Chiefs!!!· Multiple faculty and residentstraveled to ACEP (Denver) and CORD(NYC) conferences together; both werefantastic professional development andcamaraderie building events!· Service learning: in the fall we spentthe morning touring and helping withtasks at Operation Breakthrough, a localservice organization. All alumni are invited to attendour weekly conferences and socialize!Conferences are held every Thursday.During the pandemic all conferences areoccurring virtually. For specific details orto be added to the conference scheduledistribution list, please contact ChristinaMayne (christina.mayne@tmcmed.org).In this time of uncertainty andchange, I have never been prouder to beat this program; our faculty and residents’flexibility, dedication, and teamworkcontinue to inspire and humble me.The residents always appreciatelearning from our alumni andcommunity partners who haveparticipated in didactics, paneldiscussions, Mock Oral Boards, andclinical shifts. Many thanks to you andour tireless, dedicated faculty and staffwho proudly carry on our UMKC-EMtradition.· The now traditional Ladies’ nightsand Man days: Karaoke dressed as DisneyPrincesses (yes really!) and a Holidaylight tour for the ladies, BBQ andpickleball for the guys.Amy Stubbs, MD, Program Director· Checkout our Facebook, Instagram(@umkc.em), and Twitter (@umkcEM)accounts to keep up on all the latesthappeningsMelanie Camejo, MD, Assistant Program Directorand Clerkship DirectorEmily Hillman, MD, Associate Program DirectorKevin O’Rourke, MD, Associate Program Director5
