The AAMA Certifying Board’spolicies and fees are subject to change without notice.Recertification of theCMA (AAMA) credentialThe CMA (AAMA) designates a medical assistantwho is credentialed through the Certifying Boardof the American Association of Medical Assistants.The CMA (AAMA) credential must be recertifiedevery 60 months to better ensure current competencyand knowledge, and thus better protect patients. AllCMAs (AAMA) employed or seeking employmentmust have current certified status to use the CMA(AAMA) credential. Failure to recertify will resultin a not current status.CMA (AAMA) expirationand recertification datesFor recertificants by continuing education, therecertification date will be the first day of themonth of the application postmark. All newlycertified and recertifying CMAs (AAMA) will becurrent through the end of the calendar month ofinitial certification or most recent recertificationfor 60 months after initial certification or mostrecent recertification.Candidates who successfully recertify theirCMA (AAMA) credential will receive a certificateand identification card, which indicates the recertification and expiration dates.Renewal of expired credentialsAny CMA (AAMA) not recertifying on orbefore the expiration date of their credential will beconsidered as having an expired credential and willbe required to pay a 50 reactivation fee in additionto the recertification fee in order to recertify. Thisapplies to recertification by continuing educationor examination.Any CMA (AAMA) whose credential has beenexpired for more than 60 months forfeits the rightto reactivate the credential by continuing educationand must sit for the CMA (AAMA) Certification/Recertification Examination. Payment of a 50reactivation fee plus the recertification by examination fee will be required.Effective January 1, 2020: An individual whosecredential has been expired for more than 90 daysforfeits the right to reactivate the credential bycontinuing education and must sit for the CMA(AAMA) Certification/Recertification Examination.Required recertification pointsA total of 60 recertification points is necessaryto recertify the CMA (AAMA) credential. Aminimum of 10 points is required in each ofthe general, administrative, and clinical contentareas. (See “Accepted areas of content.”) Theremaining 30 points may be accumulated in anyof the three content areas.Minimum program length: A minimum of onecontact hour is required to earn one point towardrecertifying the CMA (AAMA) credential. A contacthour is defined as a typical 50-minute classroominstructional session, or its equivalent.Time limits for recertification points: Pointstoward recertification are valid only if earnedafter initial certification or after the most recent recertification. Completethe form according to the instructions and attachthe required documentation.Required documentation for AAMA CEUs. Theapplicant’s AAMA Registry Transcript must accompany the application.Required documentation for non-AAMA recertification points. Official documentationissued by the sponsor granting the credit must beattached to the application, and should includethe following:1) Date credit was earned2) Name of sponsor issuing credit3) A course description or content outline foreach educational activity4) Amount and type of credit awarded (e.g., CEU,CME, contact hour, or college credit)5) A certificate of completion or attendance foreach activity bearing the number of contacthours awardedDo not send originals. Documentation submitted will not be returned to the applicant.Documentation submitted separately from theapplication and payment will not be reviewedand will not be returned.Incomplete applicationsIncomplete or incorrect applications or failureto document proof of each activity will resultin failure to recertify. Applicants who submitincomplete applications or fail to provide adequate documentation will be allowed 90 daysfrom issuance of notice to resolve the outstandingissue(s). This additional time does not extend the60-month certification period. If all documentsare not submitted within the 90-day period, theapplicant must reapply and pay all fees.Applications submitted earlyRecertification by Continuing Education applications received up to three months prior to arecertification date will be processed accordinglyif an affidavit is received or if the option for earlyrecertification is checked on the application.Applications received prior to the three monthspreceding a recertification expiration date will bereturned unless early recertification is selected.Applicants are advised to check the “My Certification Information” page of the AAMA website(www.aama-ntl.org) or by calling the AAMA toverify their expiration date prior to applying forrecertification.Processing period: 30 daysnnnReview of recertification applications can takeup to 30 days.
