JUNE 2014Photos: Hillarie JasonCampus NewsQCC Pilots New Program forResidents of Hector Reyes HouseOn Wednesday, June 25, 13 Latino men from the HectorReyes House in Worcester received certificates ofcompletion for an accelerated, basic culinary programunder the direction of Pat Hutchinson, Professorand Coordinator of the Hospitality and RecreationManagement program.The graduating students, all residents of the HectorReyes House, a rehabilitation facility for drug addictedLatino men, some of whom may be newly released fromprison for drug-related offenses, coordinated the menuand prepared most of the food for the dinner ceremony,complete from appetizers to desert.The event was a highly emotional closure to the newprogram funded by a Strategic Planning Grant facilitatedby Deb Gonzalez, Director of Community Bridges. Thepilot program is a unique (part-education and training,part rehabilitation) community outreach effort that hasyet to be seen anywhere in Central MA. Deb Gonzalezsaid recently, “I have been in many other communitiesand have not seen a program and collaboration like herein Worcester. When you have 100 percent success, youhave found something very, very good that you have toreplicate or try to replicate.” By any college standard,the program was an overwhelming success with 100%attendance, 100% completion and 100% pass rate.(Every student passed a final exam with a grade of 80 orhigher – Several dealt with the challenges that Englishas a second language poses. QCC was able to providerecipes and instructions in Spanish and English.)The men attended class four days a week, eight hoursper day and learned basic culinary techniques as wellas earned ServSafe certification – an industry standardsanitation procedures program. They also completedthe program with multiple signature recipes in allmeal categories. Pat Hutchinson was extremely proudof the students, many of whom were interviewed forlocal news stories, “I can’t tell you how wonderful itwas to hear the ‘guys’ tell their stories. We are doinggreat work at QCC and I am so excited that the word isgetting out.”The men are well-trained for entry-level restaurantwork which many plan to pursue after their new-foundsuccess in QCC’s program. The Hector Reyes Househas also purchased a restaurant on Shrewsbury Streetwhere some of the men will transition into jobs – butonly those with the skills and training necessary for aprofessional culinary job – QCC trained, of course!The new QCC program has received local notice asWorcester Magazine’s cover story for the July 3 anueva-new-life-addicts-cook-recovery/24919. TheTelegram and Gazette has also planned a cover story andHispano/Vocero News is also in process of writing a storyabout the program.

Campus NewsJUNE 2014MOC Cod Award Winners from QCC!QCC was recently recognized as an eLearningexemplar at the 10th annual MassachusettsColleges Online (MCO) eLearning Conference held atBridgewater State University on June 4. ProfessorsGaelen Benway and Judy Colson’s courses wereboth selected from more than 2,600 courses offeredthrough MCO, a consortium of the 15 Massachusettscommunity colleges and seven members of thestate university system to receive the MCO Courseof Distinction (COD) Award. Professor GaelenBenway’s course (Dynamics of Race and EthnicRelations) and Professor Judy Colson’s course(Introduction to Psychology) were recognized witha MCO Course of Distinction (COD) award.Congratulations Professors Benway and Colson!Veteran Affairs UpdatePaula Ogden, Director of the Veteran Affairs Officerecently represented QCC at a Stand Down event,designed to showcase various service providersto the Veteran community. QCC was listed as aprovider and was the only college at the yearlyevent, hosted by Veterans Inc. in Worcester on June21 and 22. This eventhonors POWS and missingsoldiers and is traditionallypart of military dining-inceremonies and serviceballs. When presented ina dining-in or service ball,a narration given to the audience explains thesymbolism of each item at the table. This will bethe second year that the Office of Veteran Affairshas presented this honorary.

SydneyCobb received a free QCC course, donated by thePresident’s office.The Gateway to College program is for studentswho have dropped out of high school or are at riskof not graduating.
