The teaching guildwas the guild of the master of arts. The bachelor was the apprentice of themaster.In American colleges and universities, the gown has become a symbolof the democracy of scholarship as it covers dress indicating rank orsocial standing. Associate, bachelor’s and master’s degree gowns have notrimming. The doctor’s degree gown is faced with velvet and has velvet barson the sleeves in colors to show the faculty or discipline to which the degreepertains.The cap derives from Roman times when freed slaves had the privilegeof wearing a cap and thus symbolizes freedom of scholarship. Academiccaps feature a tassel indicating the wearer’s discipline.The hood is the forerunner to the present cap. The colors of the hooddenote the discipline represented by the degree, and the college or universityfrom which the degree was granted.
