Broadband Communities recognizes 100 outstanding providers that MDUproperty owners rely on to provide technology amenities to their residents.A BBC Staff ReportIn this issue focusing on multipledwelling-unit (MDU) technology,Broadband Communities presentsthe first Top 100 list dedicated to companies that serve the MDU market.Though this magazine devotes muchof its coverage to fiber to the home andbelieves FTTH is the end game for bothmultifamily and single-family broadband, FTTH is clearly not the only important technology trend in MDUs today. Property owners follow a variety ofpaths as they scramble to keep up withresidents’ insatiable demands for bandwidth, convenience and mobility. Thedemographics of MDU communities, their construction, their existing infrastructure and many other factors influence owners’ choices and timelines fortechnology upgrades.Accordingly, this list is more technology-neutral than the FTTH Top100 list. A property owner whose mosturgent priority is improving indoor cellular coverage, getting satellite dishes offbalconies or adding more high-definition stations to a TV channel lineup canfind resources here. However, multifamily technology isso varied that, inevitably, the list couldnot address it all. We focused on technologies that make properties more attractive to residents, omitting solutions40designed solely to improve owners’ operational efficiency, such as lease management systems, property managementsystems and asset management systems.Included on the list are companiesthat do one or more of the following: Sell video, Internet, telephone andrelated services to residents of multifamily properties, either individuallyor in bulk, through agreements withproperty owners Design, build or manage broadbandnetworks in multifamily propertieson behalf of property owners or service providers Offer expertise to property ownersor service providers about the legal, financial and marketing aspects ofdelivering broadband Provide equipment for wired broadband networks Provide equipment for video headends and video distribution Provide equipment for wirelessbroadband (either cellular or Wi-Fi) Provide back-office software or services for subscriber management, customer care, billing and relatedfunctions Offer solutions for MDU technologyamenities beyond the triple play. Some of these companies sell products and services directly to propertyowners, and others sell products andservices to their providers, such as private cable operators. However, whetherproperty owners deal directly or indirectly with these companies, they allprovide solutions that property ownersshould be aware of.Criteria and Selection ProcessTo select the Top 100 MDU technologyproviders, Broadband Communitiesrelied on a panel of industry experts thatincluded property owners, consultantsand analysts. However, because expertsdon’t always agree and because changeswere taking place in the industry as thisfeature was researched and prepared, themagazine’s editors made the final selections. In addition to operating in the U.S.market, criteria included the following: Provision of products or services thathelp property owners create technology amenities to attract and retainresidents. The technology amenities thatattract and retain residents varydepending on the residents to beattracted and retained. Some demographics are looking for blazingInternet speeds, over-the-top videosolutions and ubiquitous wirelesscoverage; others are more impressed BROADBAND COMMUNITIES www.broadbandcommunities.com October 2012
