There is a holiday that comes between Halloween andChristmas. It is called Thanksgiving It is a beautiful, warm, cozy holiday. It is a nonde nominational holiday with a lovely, simple message—to give thanks to God for all He hasgiven us.It also celebrates the harvest. The grocery stores spend a lot of time on Thanksgiving, froma food point of view. Those turkey, pumpkins, pies, etc, make them a lot of money! Most ofthose stores skip right from Halloween to Christmas, without taking a breath. Off come theHalloween decorations and up go the Christmas ornaments without taking a breath. One of the television networks starts a countdown to Christmas at the beginning of Novem ber! I worked for Nordstrom’s for a period of time. They are the only store that refuses todecorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving is over. Bravo for Nordstrom’s. Some re tailers already have Christmas ornaments for sale now!Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because of its dedication to God and thehome.Don’t forget Thanksgiving this year! Honor it and enjoy its warmth. Takea quiet time and thank God. Then watch your football games andspend time with family and friends. Then, after it is over, you have plenty of time to get ready forChristmas!November 2013 Murrayhill Times3

My Two Cents:Good MannersBy Gina Varney, Hearthstone ResidentOne of the best things about living at Hearthstone is all theactivities that are available to us. If you look at the calendarfor the month you are bound to see something that will ap peal to you. The activities department does a great job ofmaking sure there is something for everyone. This wouldn’tbe possible without the help of some dedicated volunteers.Volunteers come in all shapes and sizes and vary in age.Whether they are teenagers or retirees, they all have one thing in common: their willing ness to give up their time and talents to help us stay healthy in mind and spirit. We shouldbe grateful that they are so generous. One of the activities that I participate in is bingo. It is a fun activity that occurs four times aweek, so often it is a volunteer who calls the numbers. Unfortunately it seems that bingodoesn’t always bring out the best in some people. I have witnessed some very rude be havior during these games directed at the person calling the numbers. Yes, sometimesthe numbers are called a little too slow or too fast. The numbers are hard to read sosometimes a mistake may be made; but lighten up, this is only a game. Some of thecomments that have been made are totally inappropriate and have hurt the feelings ofsome of our volunteers. Let’s remember good manners are always in style. My motherused to say, “If you can’t say something nice about someone, don’t say anything at all.”We should all remember that. Let’s show our volunteers how much we appreciate themby giving them the respect they deserve.Let’s Celebrate November Birthdays 1 — Gwen Stocks4 — Peg Hicks5 — William (Bill) Wiese9 — Ed Miller11 — Marv VossWayne DugganVirginia Emberson14 — Bobbye Zikeli15 — Isabelle Emberlin18 — Marion Hyman4Murrayhill Times November 201319 — Maxine HighlandMargie Walton20 — Virginia Emberson21 — Dick AaronLindy Johnson24 — Kay Singmaster25 — Bob Forness26 — Joanna Italiano29 — Marian Shuler

A Tip from AngelEasing Neck PainSubmitted by Angel Higbee, Fitness InstructorIf you are experiencing neck and or shoulder pain, first youshould decide what may have caused the pain. Maybe youreached for something and pulled a muscle or maybe youdid too much gardening or just even slept on your pillow wrong.Whatever the case may be, if the pain lasts more than a week, you should see your doctor. In thebest case, the muscles are just sore from straining them. To help them heal, you should reduceactivity for a week and use ice (for the first 48-72 hours) and heat (everyday after that) to help re duce pain and inflammation. You may also use over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofenor acetaminophen but do not exceed the recommended doses.Words to Live ByBy Dave McElheran, ChaplainGive thanks in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.1 Thessalonians 5:18Thanksgiving time! For many of us it is a time to get together with family and friends to enjoyeach other’s company. Sometimes however, well intended events can be times when it is dif ficult to give thanks. Illness, financial stress and memories to mention a few, can sometimescloud our vision of God’s great care.Giving thanks in all circumstances is an act of the will and requires us to believe that God isfaithful and will provide everything we need. Remember as you approach this season to givethanks for all that God has done and is doing.November 2013 Murrayhill Times5

One of the reg ular bus passengers, an elderlywoman, told us that her hus band was not there to take herhome. We put her in our sta tion wagon and took her to herhouse and made sure that shewas able to get inside. By thetime we got home, the stormwas in its full fury.Needless to say, the powerwas out, so we hunkered downin front of the fireplace and hadthe dinner which Norma hadprepared earlier. About anhour later, there was a largecrash at the back of our house.Murrayhill Times November 2013About two or three weeks later,we were working in our frontyard.
