During graduate study, more effort is required on an academiclevel, and there are usually specialrequirements that must be completed atthe end of the student’s program. UMUCrequires students to complete com prehensive exams and a dissertationonly at the doctoral level. While manytraditional master’s degree programsmay culminate with the completion ofa thesis, most UMUC programs requirean integrative end-of-program capstonecourse instead.Students who remain in continuousenrollment should refer to the catalogof the year in which they began gradu ate study for the specific requirementsrelated to their program of study. Con tinuous enrollment is defined on p. 141.All graduate students must maintaina cumulative grade point average(GPA) of 3.0 and receive no grade of Fto remain in good academic standing.Academic progress is assessed at theend of each session. Other require ments, such as time limits to degreecompletion, also apply; details areprovided on p. 140.While UMUC’s course formats offerconsiderable flexibility, students enter ing graduate-level programs shouldknow that graduate study requires asignificant time commitment. Eachweek, graduate students should expectto devote at least 3 hours of outsidestudy for every credit in which they areenrolled. According to that calculation, graduate students need to devote tooutside study, research, and reading aminimum of 9 to 12 hours per week, per3-credit course.NONPROGRAM COURSESBecause UMUC graduate students oftenenter graduate study with academicbackgrounds in very different fields andreturn to study after a gap of many years,UMUC offers a number of courses outsidethe usual required program courses thatare designed to help students succeedin their graduate studies. Most of thesecourses are noncredit and optional; thecourse in library research skills, however,is required for all students entering gradu ate study at UMUC. Complete coursedescriptions are provided on pp. 86–126.Required Course in LibraryResearch SkillsUCSP 611 Introduction to GraduateLibrary Research Skills is designedto familiarize students with online libraryand information resources—material thatis critical for 21st-century managers. This noncredit course is required for allnew graduate students and all inactivestudents who reapply for admission.
