The physicaltherapist providestherapeutic services toindividuals of all ages withmusculoskeletal,neurological, sensorimotor,cardiovascular, and otherphysiological dysfunctions.Physical therapists may beemployed in hospitals andextended care facilities,ambulatory clinics, schoolsystems and sportsmedicine centers. Theymay also be self-employedprofessionals in privatepractice.About the DPT at Hunter:The Program is an entrylevel post-baccalaureateclinical doctorate (DPT)degree curriculum.The Commission onAccreditation in PhysicalTherapy Education of theAmerican Physical TherapyAssociation has granted thisprogram Full Accreditationstatus through 2016. Arecent re-accreditation sitevisit was extremely positive.The program has beenaccredited since 1971.Alumni from our pastundergraduate, MPT andDPT programs haveachieved a passing rate onthe National LicensingExamination equal to orabove the nationalaverage. The full-timefaculty are active in manyfacets of the PhysicalTherapy Profession. Allfaculty members areengaged in researchand/or publishing in peerreviewed journals. Facultymembers have an averageof 14 years of teachingexperience and over 18years of clinicalexperience. The applicationwill be available on-line athttp://www.hunter.cuny.edu/graduateadmissions onor about August 15, 2012.Applying to the Hunter College DPT Program for June2013IMPORTANT NOTICE: The Doctor of Physical Therapy Program currently operates via aconsortium arrangement among the Graduate Center of CUNY (the -granting institution) andthe College of Staten Island and Hunter College campus programs. We are beginning atransition whereby the College of Staten Island and Hunter College will each assume degreegranting authority.Pending approval by the New York State Education Department, the first step in the transitionwill take place at Hunter College. Hunter College will be the degree-granting institution forDoctor of Physical Therapy students enrolled in the Class of 2016 (beginning June 2013) at theHunter College campus. The second step of the transition will occur when College of StatenIsland assumes degree-granting authority for students applying for admission to the Class of2017 (beginning Fall 2014). Admission Requirements1. Applicants must have completed a bachelor’sdegree (BA or BS) from an accredited four-yearinstitution by the end of the spring semester prior toentry. You are not required to be a graduate ofHunter College to apply to this program. If you havetaken courses in a non-accredited institution and/oryou have taken courses outside of the U.S., thesecourses will not be accepted as equivalent to HunterCollege courses, and will not be accepted as helpingto meet the number of credits required for earning abachelor’s degree or as counting toward ourprerequisites. Even if another U.S. college acceptsthose credits, we will not. For example, if you havetaken 30 credits abroad or in the U.S. within a nonaccredited institution, these credits will not beaccepted as meeting the minimum of 120 credits tohave earned a bachelor’s degree, even if you weregranted a bachelor’s degree by another college inthe U.S. Be sure the credentials you are paying forare valid elsewhere.We require an undergraduate grade point average(GPA) of 3.0 or above. If a course is repeated, bothgrades are used in GPA calculation.2. Two semesters of Anatomy & Physiology, with lab(e.g., Anatomy & Physiology; Biol 120, 122)3. Two semesters of physics for science majors, withlab (e.g., General Physics; Phys 110 & 120)4. Two semesters of chemistry for science majors,with lab (e.g., Chem 102, 104 & 106 (which is lab forChem 102 &104)5. One semester of college level mathematics (e.g.,Math 125, Precalculus: If you are taking this course atHunter, you may email[nmoy@hunter.cuny.edu]to request registering for MATH 125 without the MATH126 corequisite.)6. Two semesters of psychology. We recommend,but do not require, one semester of developmentalor child psychology.7. One semester of statistics (e.g., Stat. 113 orStatistics for Psychology majors)9. Basic Life Support by the American Heart Association(212-878-5900, www.americanheart.org) ORCardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification by the RedCross (212-787-1000, www.nyredcross.org). An advantage oftaking CPR through the American Heart Association isrenewal every two years, not annually. You must submit acopy of your CPR card to the Physical Therapy Program atthe address above.10. Two letters of recommendation. We suggest at least onebe written by a physical therapist. The second letter can befrom a college faculty member. Formal letters ofrecommendation attached to a completed clinicalexperience form will be considered one letter ofrecommendation plus documentation required of the clinicalexperience.11. Documented clinical experience of at least 100 hours inthe United States under the supervision of a licensed physicaltherapist, with a minimum of 50 hours in a hospital-based orrehabilitation setting. See documented experience foradditional information on submitting a Clinical Experiencerequirement. You cannot complete all of your clinicalexperience in a private practice! The most common errormade by applicants is not fully meeting this requirement byDecember 1st.12. Filing of the Hunter College Graduate Admissions OnlineApplication. The online application becomes availableapproximately August 15th. You can use this link to accessthe issions.The deadline for all application materials is DECEMBER 1ST,including transcripts and all clinical experience form(s).Apply early! Payment of the application fee is required.13. The GRE is required and scores must be forwarded to theHunter College Graduate Admissions Office (Code # 2301).We do accept scores from the previous version of the GRE(before the Fall of 2011). If you are first taking the exam thisfall, be sure to indicate when you have taken the GRE's andbe sure we get the scores sent to the Admissions Office ASAP.We do not have a specific cutoff score for being consideredfor admission. For information on the GRE, go to www.gre.org14. Applicants invited for interviews will write an essay abouta topic chosen by the DPT faculty on the day of the interview.15. The TOEFL examination is required for applicants whohave not earned a bachelor's degree in an English-speakingcountry. We expect a score of at least 550 on the paperbased; 79-80 on the Internet based; and 213 on thecomputer-based examination. More Admission InformationThe bachelor’s degreerequirement for entry isbased upon the CAPTEcriteria which mandatesthat physical therapyprograms are “ built on abalance of course work insocial sciences,humanities, and naturalsciences, which isappropriate in depth andbreadth, to develop theability in students to thinkindependently, to weightvalues, to understandfundamental theory, andto develop skill for clinicalpractice, including criticalthinking andcommunication.”Meeting the minimumrequirements doesnot guaranteeacceptance to theprogram, which isbased, by necessity,on the limitations ofspace and resources.The Hunter CollegePhysical TherapyProgram is dedicatedto equal opportunityfor all applicants whomeet admissionrequirements. Clinical Experience RequirementsDocumented clinical experience of a minimum100 hours under supervision of a licensed physicaltherapist in the United States is required beforeapplying to the program; (minimum of 50 hoursmust be in a hospital based or rehabilitationsetting). Inquire at any hospital aboutvolunteering in their Physical TherapyDepartment to gain this clinical experience.The Clinical Experience Form (see attached)documenting completion of the 100 hours mustbe received by the Physical Therapy ProgramNO LATER THAN December 1st.The clinical experience must be obtained with alicensed Physical Therapist in a Physical TherapyDepartment and completed by the sametherapist. Foreign trained physical therapists, orindividuals obtaining clinical experience outsidethe U.S., should refer to the section below forInternational Students.The Hunter College DPTProgram supports thephilosophy of aninternationally renownedphysical therapist,Florence Kendall, PT,FAPTA. Be sure to read the instructions for meetingthis requirement. It must be submitted byDecember 1st and be completed by the physicaltherapist.The therapist completing this form may attach aletter of recommendation to the form in additionto completing the form. This will count as one oftwo required letters of recommendation. If it isnot possible to forward a clinical experienceform, we will accept a letter (from the physicaltherapist), stating your accumulated number ofclinical experience hours, type of facility, thephysical therapist’s impression according tocriteria on the Clinical Experience Form.The purpose of theDoctorate in PhysicalTherapy Program is toprepare professionallycompetent physicaltherapists that will becapable of providing adiverse scope of PhysicalTherapy services.
