It is amazing that in 7 weeks and only 16rehearsals you were able to learn all the songs, lines, blocking andchoreography and prepare the sets, costumes and props. The entire castwas only together four times! This means that a lot of practicing and preparations were done byindividuals on your own time. It was a blessing that everyone was healthy and that the weather wasfine the day of the performances. This musical helped us examine how our lives can involve thesethree acts: seeking Jesus, believing in Jesus, and serving Jesus. Through the grace of our LordJesus, may we all be born from above daily with the power of the Spirit!Nancy Wales, Director

I currently amteaching the 1st and 2nd grade class. My family joined Hosanna about 16 years ago and we usually attend the 10:30service. I am currently employed as a baker andfroster at Nothing Bundt Cakes, which I love. However, it’s not so good for my waistline! Life is prettybusy, but I make time for my book club, gardening, and caring for our pets (2 cats, 2 guinea pigs, and some fish). If so, I hope you enjoyed the colors andstaggering blooms that appeared over the summer months. Perhapsyou’ve wondered who planted and maintained them. These four plantershave been done by various members over the years. There are no fundsset aside in the church budget to do the containers and neither is anyspecific group assigned to provide and maintain the entrance flowerpots. This past summer, I chose to do the planters as a belated birthday giftfor Elna Knutson. I couldn’t think of a better way to honor her than tochoose annuals that were purple, her favorite color.First, I took into account the variety of new annuals that were beingintroduced to growers and how these plants may or may not be right for the growing conditions wehave at church. Next, I looked for some with larger showy blossoms and some with smallerblossoms. It was also important to include a variety of textures to make the planters moreinteresting. With faithful deadheading, watering, and fertilizing I got favorable results with theannuals that were chosen.Come fall, it was time to empty the containers and move them carefully back into the storage shed.Steve was my fall recruit to help with this task as the containers are too heavy and fragile for oneperson. He was also on call to help in the spring when it was time to get them out of storage. As springtime nears, it’s time to think about the four entrance flower pots once again. This summer, Iwould like to give someone else the opportunity to do them as I cannot commit to doing them. It’s myhope that perhaps you will be inspired to take on the responsibility for funding, choosing plants andsoil, planting, and maintaining the four entrance pots. There are many resources available and ifneed be, I could offer helps and suggestions. Another possibility is to take this project on withanother family. It gives great pleasure to see the plants grow and flourish over the summer months. The entrance flower pots are a great way to welcome our visitors and members to Hosanna.Prayerfully consider saying, “Yes, I’ll provide and maintain the four flower pots this summer.”Faithfully yours,Nan PetersIf you would like to be a part of the Memorial Garden team please contact the office.Use what talents you possess; the woods would be very silent if no birds sang there except thosethat sang best. Herald Volume 40 Issue 4Page 10President’s PageWe often hear that Lent is a journey, but what kind of journey is it? For clues, let’slook at some of the well known journeys in the Bible: (Genesis 6 through 8) Noah builds a boat on dry land, then goes on a nauticaladventure (Genesis 12) Abraham and Sarah leave their home, family and people and go to a new land (Exodus) The people of Israel leave Egypt and head for the promised land (Ruth) Ruth leaves her home and people to go to the land of her mother-in-law (Judges 6 and 7) Gideon leads a small band of soldiers against a great army (John 3) Nicodemus leaves his traditions to follow Jesus (Matt 26: 36-44) Jesus in the Garden of GethsemaneThe circumstances are different, but what is common is these are all journeys of faith. God speaksto Noah, Abraham, Sarah, and Moses, and they leave what is comfortable and familiar to go to aplace known only to God. They do not know where they are going, yet they go because they havefaith that God will provide for of them. Through faith, Gideon follows God’s command to lead a smallband of soldiers into almost certain defeat, but he goes because he knows God is with him. Jesusknows what is about to happen on Good Friday, yet he goes because it is the Father’s will.Nicodemus hears the Good News from Jesus, which leads him on a journey away from histraditions. His faith is no longer in keeping the law, but in the Messiah. These people prayed forguidance, and in some cases argued and pleaded with God. Eventually they realized that God is incontrol and is always with His people.Lent emphasizes that we are also on a journey of faith. Like these examples, it is not alwaysobvious where we are going and there are many hardships along the way. We pray, plead andargue with God, but through it all our faith helps sustain us. During Lent we pause on our life’sjourney and intentionally take time to talk to God. We re-discover where He is leading us throughhis Son.David WallNewsletter Going GreenStarting with the June newsletter, we will be saving on paper, copiercosts, mailing costs and staff time by directing members to (www.hosannalutheran.org/2019-herald/). Each month, members willreceive an e news notifying them that the monthly newsletter is available digitally. We will no longerprint and mail a newsletter to all members, however, if an individual is unable to retrieve thenewsletter on line they may request a paper copy. We will print a few copies and have themavailable at church. Watch for more details in the coming months and find me at church if you haveconcerns.David Wall

Herald Volume 40 Issue 4Page 11Pastor Meier’s PageDear Members and Friends of Hosanna,Former Bishop of our Southeastern Minnesota Synod, Glenn Nyckelmoe, shared his experience of officiating at a committal service in a rural Wisconsinchurch. As the casket was lowered into the grave, a six year-old boy asked hismother in a loud voice, “How is Grandpa going to get out of that box and intoheaven?”“Out of the mouths of babes ” - it seems this young boy put the big question in a nutshell. How areany of us going to get out of the box?Remember that three women made their way to Jesus’ tomb that first Easter morning. When theyarrived, the stone was rolled away. How did it happen? Our God who first created life gave newlife. God rolled away the stone and God will open our tombs as well. We are promised resurrectionin Jesus Christ. Our modern culture has taken steps to soften the finality of the box. The casket is not normallylowered in the presence of family any more. When the casket is finally lowered and covered withdirt, death is very final. Who will open the grave? “earth to earth, ashes to ashes, dust to dust ”The women found an empty tomb! They came in sorrow but they left in joy. They trusted the powerand promise of God. Such
