Consumerization of IT Then, work introduced technology employees. Now, employees introduce technology to work. How people use technology in their day to day livesdrives expectations for innovation at work. People entering workforce today have grown upconnected and expect that in their work.

Statistics Examples of how people connect The following are some real statistics around what we deal with everyday:

Survey of young work force about email79% of younger workers claim to send work email from personal emailaccounts52% feel their personal email system is better than their work email(only 29% of those age 55 feel the same way)47% feel it is perfectly fine to forward work email to personal emailaccounts36% of email in company mailboxes is not work related feel the same)

Google StudySurvey of 3500 professionals78% Were not satisfied with technology in their work, preferring to usethe tools they use in personal lives instead.46% Feel that their employer does not make the best use of technologyat work81% Direct relationship between collaboration and innovation

Cisco StudySurvey of 1400 college grads (age 20-23) and 1400 professional (under age of30)70% feel that company issued devices should be allowed for personaluse70% admitted to regularly breaking IT policies knowingly33% felt the internet was as important as food, water, air, and shelter. This study also revealed that of those surveyed, many stated that if providedthe choice between technology flexibility and salary, that they would choosethe flexibility over the pay.

What do the numbers tell us? As more people are using tablets and smart phones for personal use, theywill expect to use them in their work lives as well. Cisco forecasts that most enterprises will have 40% of their devices asmobile devices (tablets and phones) by 2015. (Also forecasting 10 billiondevices by 2020) People will naturally default to what they already know. People will work around the system to get the job done.

IT of old – Asset Management IT has been trained to manage assets (applications and devices) becauseof: Licensing Security User error Cost We have the heavy hand and chose to control so we can stabilize. This makes IT processes rigid and appears inflexible and slow to change. This is a problem because it is becoming increasingly difficult to controldevices and applications.

Need to shift to User-Centric Management What is UCM? User centric management says that the user is intelligent enough tofigure things out and that you provide the means to do work and theycan choose the path. You control the important things and the rest works itself out. Flexibility allows for resiliency.

The User Experience o User – the user accessing datao Device – the object they are using to physically interact with foraccesso Interface – The application they are using. This can comprise manylayers (application accessing a web application accessing a VMaccessing and application accessing data)o State – Settings that make the interaction uniqueo Data – the end all object the user needs to perform work

The User Experience EquationUseroooooDeviceInterfaceStateDataAlways starts with userAlways contains all fives objectsOur focus should be the end result: User ExperienceOur mandate is to secure the data though.Flexibility is easy if we focus on securing the dataUserExperience

Problem with securing the data How to you identify personal data from company data? iPad and child Provide flexibility removes need for workarounds Recognize you will always have workarounds, identify ways to embraceand provide control IT wants CONTROL, Users want CHOICE

This is more than BYOD Bring your own device is only one aspect.Bring your own solution is a better descriptionProvide solutions and users won't spend time looking for their ownUsers are smart enough to find solutions and apps.Users are “trained” to look and find what they want to complete whatthey need. (Smart phones and app stores)
