For 2014,we are excited to honor an extensive varietyof successful companies — from thosethat have made the list every year since itsinception to some that are making a firsttime appearance.As in the past, the list includes onlycompanies located in the United States,and rankings are based solely on annualsales revenue. Participation was voluntary.Each contractor reported its total revenueand business statistics for 2013, while somealso offered valuable insight into theircompanies, the industry and the economy.All information was self-reported betweenJan. 24 and June 15 of 2014.Holding on tight to the No. 1 spotfor the third year in a row is CentiMarkCorporation of Canonsburg, Pa. Thecompany reported more than 484 millionin revenue for this past year. “Thanks toCentiMark’s loyal, repeat customers, we hadanother record-breaking year in 2013,” saidCOO and President Timothy Dunlap.Coming in again at No. 2 is TectaAmerica Corporation of Rosemont, Ill., with 403 million in reported revenue. Roundingout the top 10 are Baker Roofing Companyof Raleigh, N.C.; North American Roofingof Asheville, N.C.; Nations Roof of LithiaSprings, Ga.; Mr. Roof of Ann Arbor,Mich.; Beldon Group of Companies of SanAntonio; Aspen Contracting Inc. of Lee’sSummit, Mo.; Best Contracting Servicesof Gardena, Calif.; and Simon Roofing ofYoungstown, Ohio.Success StoriesDespite some challenging conditionsincluding a slowly recovering economyand some severe weather, this year’s topcontractors hung tough during the pastyear. “We had a very solid year in 2013,”explained Darren Begg, senior vice presidentof Aetna Roofing Corporation in Trenton,N.J. “The early part of the year started off alittle slow with a very competitive biddingatmosphere, but as the year progressed themarket seemed to improve.”However, many contractors noted thattheir accomplishments were not achievedwithout some difficulty. We saw about 50 percent growthfrom 2012.”“Our company did better than expectedin 2013,” said Rob Kornahrens, president ofAdvanced Roofing Inc. in Fort Lauderdale,Fla. “Our overall revenue was the sameas 2012; however, profit was up due toour solar division ramping up productionon several large projects throughout thestate of Florida and focusing on increasingefficiencies in our roofing operationsdivision.”For some, 2013 marked some significantmilestones. Ken Gwyn, CEO of TheBulldog Group in Winston-Salem, N.C.,said his company had its best financialperformance since 2008. Chris Lowe, vicepresident of Kidd Roofing in Austin, Texas,and Gary Curry, president of Roofing byCurry in Sarasota, Fla., both said that theircompanies enjoyed record-breaking years in2013. Curry pointed to a 60 percent increasein revenue over 2012.It was also a banner year for Titan RoofingInc. of Springfield, Mass. According toDunlap, CentiMark is one such example.“CentiMark has a strong tradition ofexploring new ways to increase sales,” hesaid. “We have added electronic marketingincluding our CentiMark mobile app,regenerated our website and updated ourcustomer-friendly resource database —MyCentiMark.com. We are very proud ofour expanding customer service initiativesand our investment in our national, globaland regional account programs. By placingthe right people with our diverse customerbase, we are able to grow both customer andmarket share while creating an exceptionalcustomer experience.”Many other companies also lookedto internal restructuring as a means ofgenerating new work and increasingproductivity in 2013. Green said SaratogaRoofing launched a strategic account salesteam, started a quality-control division andinvested heavily in training its crews thispast year. According to Willetts, Burns &Scalo incorporated new technology andautomation into its estimating, operationsand accounting procedures. Dan Mesch,director of operations for American DreamHome Improvement in Downers Grove, Ill.,said his company relied on an evolving mixof new policies, programs and marketingcampaigns, and implemented a two-yearplan to open eight additional locations byearly spring of 2016.According to Begg, Aetna RoofingCorporation also made several companywide improvements in 2013. “Overthe past year we have hired additionalestimating staff, hired additional supportstaff, purchased a new crane to increaseproductivity and made significantinvestments in equipment,” he said. “InDecember 2013, we began construction ofan additional 13,000-square-foot warehousefacility to assist us in increasing both capacityand productivity.”Putting greater emphasis on customerrelationships also proved to be an importantconcept embraced by this year’s topcontractors. “We have implemented newinternal policies and procedures to build thebest sales teams and offer the best customerservice from start to finish,” said DanielleWoodruff, customer relations manager forInnovative Construction & Roofing inSt. Louis. “We are using target marketing,referral programs and thorough trainingprograms to ensure our representatives havethe most knowledge on all current productsand techniques to fit each of our client’sneeds to improve their home or business.”Ruberto, Feazel Inc., agreed. “Keepingour focus on the customer, taking theirneeds and wants into consideration, anddeveloping tools that will make theirexperience better has been our number-oneinitiative,” he said. “We’ve done this notonly by expanding our service capabilities togive our customers a single point of contactfor all of their exterior building needs, butalso by investing heavily into technology thatgives us greater flexibility, more accuracy andbetter response times. These technical toolsenable our customers to get things done ina more time effective, streamlined mannerwithout all the red tape of trying to trackdown who they should really be talking to,to get something done.”In addition to internal revamping, somecompanies challenged themselves to pursue

Wehave increased the amount of services weoffer and have entered new markets.”Many contractors pointed to this pastyear’s long, harsh winter as a reasonfor possible increases in roofing workand revenue for 2014. “Due to thesevere winter, all roofing contractors arefortunate to have a lot of work,” Dunlapsaid. “Our customer service initiativessuch as our CentiMark mobile app,service work and re-roofing opportunitieswill result in a strong year in 2014.”Green, Saratoga Roofing, said thisyear’s roofing season has been shorteneddue to the past year’s tough winter,which has resulted in higher-marginwork.
