MDC’s CybersecurityCenter of the AmericasPreps Trainees for Fast-Growing ProfessionCyberattacks are a growing area of concern across everyindustry in the United States. But there’s a problem: thecountry does not have enough qualified cybersecurityworkers to meet industry demands.Miami Dade College wants to change that. At the College’s new Cybersecurity Center for the Americas, students and working professionals can receive the trainingthey need to identify cyberattacks, upgrade an existingcybersecurity network and fill one of the thousands ofopen cybersecurity jobs in South Florida and the UnitedStates. Trainees at all experience levels work in a securityoperation center environment, known as an SOC, wherethey are tasked with blocking cyberattacks.“One wrong move is all it takes to turn a cybersecurityincident into a full-on disaster,” said Jorge Ortega, director of the Cybersecurity Center of the Americas. “MDC’scybersecurity program brings theory, practice, technicalexpertise and managerial competency together to produce confident graduates with in-demand skills.”Utilizing the new Cyberbit Range, a hyper-realistic simulation platform capable of mimicking different networkattack scenarios, trainees – including students enrolledin the Associate in Science in Network Security and theBachelor of Science in Information Technology degreeprograms – receive an immersive education that mergesclassroom instruction with hands-on action. The centeroffers training, certification and assessment for commercial and public sector organizations.Sixty-six percent of U.S. employers do not have enoughcybersecurity professionals to combat potential threats, according to the nonprofit Center for Cyber Safety andEducation. The center reports the cybersecurity workforce will be short by 1.8 million employees by 2022,establishing that training programs such as MDC’s arenecessary to fill that projected workforce gap.5

MDC Adult EducationProgram Helps StudentsAchieve MoreThe path to earning a college degree doesn’t always beginright after high school. Just ask Leandro Dorta Duque,an electrical engineering and computer science major atCornell University, who arrived in the United States fromCuba five years ago with limited English skills, no SAT scoresand a dream to become an engineer.“I came to the U.S when I was 20 and was undocumentedfor a year,” said Duque, who because of his legal status wasnot eligible to enroll in college and pay in-state tuition. Onthe advice of a friend, he decided to enroll in non-creditEnglish courses through Adult Education at Miami DadeCollege while he waited for his residency. It was there that Duque met Ana Maria Guadayol, anEnglish for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) professorand advisor at MDC, Kendall Campus, who helped him laythe foundation for his future
