TASTINGSTASTINGS NEWSIN THE RED5 0 P R I VAT E E D I T I O N ISSUE 44WORDS: WENDY MARITZ, SHARON FEINSTEIN. PHOTOGRAPHY: GETTYIMAGES.COM; SUPPLIEDA cache of superb reds from SouthAfrica’s most esteemed vineyardsawaits collectors and connoisseurs. For close to a century Alto Wine Estatehas built a reputation as one of the mostrespected red-wine producers in SouthAfrica. Its 2015 Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested by hand and matured in Frenchoak for 18 months, is described by critics as‘expressive’, ‘wonderfully pure’ and ‘focussed’,with a taste that is ‘deep, rich and intense’.This red blends a full-bodied fruit-drivencharacter with elegant tannins and will agewell for decades.Another red born from the exceptionalterroir of the Stellenbosch Winelandscomes in the form of the luxurious 2016Kanonkop Black Label Pinotage. The estate’slong-standing cellar master Abrie Beeslaarhas won the International Wine and SpiritCompetition’s International Winemaker of theYear award three times. He believes theseaccolades are recognition of South Africa’spotential to be rated as one of the world’spremier wine countries. A complex wine withhints of red-fruit flavours, vanilla and spiceand a palate that is sweet, rich and smooth, the 2016 Pinotage spent 18 months maturingin French oak and has an ageing potentialof 20 to 25 years. The estate welcomesguests for tastings and offers wines ontheir own or to enjoy with a pâté, biltongor chocolate pairing.Raising the bar high for South Africanwines – and representing a worthy additionfor discerning collectors – is De Toren’s BookXVII. An expression of meticulous winemakingand extreme viticulture, it is the logicalevolution of the cellar’s acclaimed Bordeauxblends. Each of the four single bunchesgrown per singular vine is individuallynurtured and manicured by hand. Describedas expressive, silky smooth yet powerful, theBook XVII is presented in a striking woodencase, which can only be opened by its uniqueaccompanying key. The bespoke packagingincludes a handwritten bottle number.alto.co.zakanonkop.co.zade-toren.comAN ITALIAN GEMRistorante Da Ivo doesn’t only owe itsfashionable reputation to its famous patronsbut also to its charm as a traditional Venetiantrattoria with great character and class.Owner Giovanni resembles a friendly bearand may hug you or crush your hand in aneffort to make you feel undoubtedly welcome.Inside, you’ll notice paintings by localsas well as the quirky but extremely precioussketches, drawn spontaneously on napkins,by the likes of George Clooney, Elton Johnand even the revered artist Damien Hirst. The small restaurant has hidden, privatecorners where you can remain incognito.I had no idea that Bono and his wife weresitting a few yards away from me, and hisbodyguard right next to us, until my frienddropped it into the conversation, and I nearlychoked on my sea bass.Located adjacent to the canal you canarrive directly by gondola, or like Clooney didfor his bachelor’s (but with a lot less fanfare)through the porta d’acqua. In the kitchen, Luciano and Marcella’spassion for cooking centres around naturalflavours, fresh seafood from the Rialto marketand the best meat. Tall, muscular Rachidwill explain whatever you need to know. Theportions are hearty and beautifully presented, the emphasis on quality rather than hookingpassing tourists. As usual in Venice, fish is aspeciality, with starters like misto crudo (asort of Venetian sushi, with marinated rawfish) and tortellini di ricotta e spinaci consalsa di basilico (pasta with ricotta, spinachand basil sauce) designed to prepare you forthe superb baked turbot with potatoes, olivesand cherry tomatoes. ristorantedaivo.itA NEW ERA FOR QUAYOne reviewer has described the fare at Quay as ‘complex, daring, inventive, gorgeous, playfuland assured. Close to perfection.’ Of its location, another has said ‘the dining room juts out likean eyrie overlooking Sydney Harbour, with full views (not glimpses) of the Opera House andbridge’. Voted Nr 1 in the country by Gourmet Traveller in 2019, Quay is, indeed, one of Autralia’smost celebrated restaurants and represents an organic space reflective of executive chef PeterGilmore’s inspired cuisine. Gilmore is known for working closely with farmers, fishermen andartisans who cultivate bespoke produce exclusively for Quay. quay.com.auHUB OF SWEET EXCELLENCESince opening its doors in 1824, Pasticceria Marchesi has evolved from being a much-lovedpatisserie offering traditional specialities, made the old-fashioned way, to a landmark venuedoing, well. pretty much the same, albeit with a contemporary twist. The original shop, whichbecame a busy and popular café in the early 1900s, has retained the style of the times withcoffered ceilings, vintage mirrors and art-deco lighting. Settle in for the panettone, renownedin Milan, and cup of simply delicious coffee during your next visit. pradagroup.com5 1 P R I VAT E E D I T I O N ISSUE 44
