The impression is confirmedwhen breaking the vehicle down to its individualparts. It then becomes apparent how lightweightand forward looking the construction really is.This has been possible only through 20 years ofexperience acquired at the Audi lightweightcentre in Neckarsulm. The Audi A6 Sedan is builtnot just from steel, as in many cars of its class,but uses an aluminium hybrid design. It is alightweight technology that until now has beenmainly used only for sports car manufacture,and with a reduced consumption that deliversgreater agility and thus increased efficiency.Thanks to the aluminium hybrid design, lowerweights can be achieved across many areas ofthe Audi A6. This begins with the chassis andsuspension. Aluminium components for partssuch as the steering, swivel bearing and wheelcarriers contribute enormously to weightreduction. The bodywork is a further major areafor the use of aluminium. Aluminium is thematerial used for the bodywork structure andall attached elements. Doors, bonnet, luggagecompartment lid and wings are all constructedfrom the rigid lightweight metal. Techniquesare used in the bodywork to enable varyinglevels of thickness and material propertieswithin a single element. Material is then usedexactly where it is required – withoutincreasing weight in other areas. The result isa sedan whose lower weight is clearlynoticeable: through a sporty agility as well asthrough comparatively low fuel consumptionand CO₂ emissions.

The MMI is used to operate anumber of in-car media, and other comfortfunctions. Until now, it has been easy to use theMMI – now it is even easier. Fewer buttonsprovide a better overview. The operating buttonsfor radio and media are logically located with thevolume control.The other six hard keys, for telephone forexample, are located around the central rotary/push-button control – for intuitive operation.Another new feature is the carousel layout in theMMI display. This provides you with an evenbetter overview, making it even easier for you toget to where you want to be. The MMI has aspecial feature: the unique MMI touch. It islocated to the left of the central control paneland is within comfortable reach, particularly incombination with the new selector lever.MMI touch offers, among other things, a newand intelligent way of controlling – by“writing” letters or numbers on the touch –sensitive screen with your finger. The systemacknowledges the entry acoustically after eachcharacter. You can also thumb through thejukebox albums of your music collection – justone brief stroke of the finger suffices.MMI touch: You can “write” on the MMItouch using your finger. The system recognisesletters and numbers. This way, the fuel – metered toalmost droplet precision – can be called uponthe millisecond that the engine requires it. Thismeans better utilisation of the fuel and ultimatelymakes reduced consumption possible.The Audi A6 employs TFSI technology. And theremarkable thing about it is that it combines theadvantages of FSI with turbocharging, whichensures even better power delivery. This combinationof the FSI concept and a turbo charger not onlyenables remarkable efficiency and impressivedynamics, but also improves the engine’s pullingpower. You will notice it as soon as you acceleratethe 2.0L TFSI engine with 132 kW (180 hp). Whencombined with the multitronic transmission ittakes you from 0 to 100 km/h in 8.3 seconds.

Since then, developments such ascommon rail technology have made TDI evenmore efficient. Piezo injectors ensure the fuel isfinely and precisely distributed. Consequently,A diesel on the podium: the R18 TDI.since the first TDI, the engines have becomearound 30% more economical, whilst specificoutput has increased. So it was only logical thata diesel car should then enter the world ofmotorsport. With great success: in 2006, theAudi R10 TDI became the world’s first dieselpowered race car to win the Le Mans 24 Hours –a victory which it has repeated several times over.A 2.0L powerful TDI Engine available on Audi A6,operates with intelligent common rail dieseltechnology. It generates 130 kW power and ahealthy torque of 380 Nm @ 1750-2500 rpm.

With the standard Audi drive select youcan influence individual vehicle components atthe push of a button and so change thecharacter of your Audi. Five modes are availableto you: efficiency, comfort, dynamic, auto andin conjunction with MMI Navigation, individual,the latter mode allowing you to determineyourself how the associated vehiclecomponents should behave. The comfortmode is especially suitable for providing themost relaxed driving possible on long journeys.The auto mode offers a generally comfortableyet sporty driving experience. For particularlysporty driving, for example on winding roads,there is the dynamic mode. The efficiency modeon the TFSI engine enables optimalconsumption conditions. As a core element inAudi drive select, the efficiency mode ischaracterised by an updated shift program andoptimal operational energy usage. In any mode,vehicle adjustments depend on the equipmentavailable. Audi drive select interacts asstandard with engine, transmission andsteering. In addition, you can influence theadaptive air suspension with damper regulation,the reversible seat belt tensioner (part of Audipre sense basic) and the cornering light. Theengine and gears react more spontaneouslyor in a more balanced manner to movementsof the accelerator, depending on the modechosen. Moreover, the engine speeds at whichgear changes take place are varied – in dynamicmode, they only happen at higher enginespeeds, while in comfort mode they take placeat lower ones. The steering can also be adaptedto the driving situation, from sporty and firm tocomfortable. The threshold at which theoptional reversible belt tensioner (part of Audipre sense basic) is triggered is adjusted in thedynamic mode. The vehicle height and thedamping forces of the damper regulation canbe varied using the adaptive air suspension.
27Technology quattro 30years of quattro With quattro ,we have invented one of the best all-wheel drive systemsin the world.Of course, that was not enough for us.quattro is a permanent all-wheel drive system. If the wheels on one axle of the vehicle lose gripon the road and threaten to spin, then the power is transferred to the other axle – automaticallyand permanently distributed through the centre differential. The basic distribution is 40:60 –40% of the power goes to the front axle, 60% to the rear. The benefit is better traction duringacceleration and improved safety due to exceptional grip. So much for the technology. But whatmakes quattro unique is really the driving feel. “As if you are stuck to the road,” some customerssay. We put it like this: quattro gives you more feel for the road and thus increased safety.
29Technology LED headlightsSubject: Light 300 CDaytime running light/indicator light unit, each of which has24 individual LEDsConventional light bulbs reach temperatures of up to 300 C. Due to their sophisticatedtechnology, LED lights are somewhat more sensitive and should not get hotterthan 150 C. Because of the engine, the temperature of the area around the headlightsis already around 120 C. In theory, then, LED headlights would need an additionalcooling system to be able to work. However, the Audi engineers did not want tospoil the good low-energy credentials of the LED headlights, so they quickly developedsomething completely new: a fan which directs heat away from the LED chips. The specialfeature of this fan is its additional benefit. The high operating temperature ofstandard bulbs means that they can defrost the headlights, which LEDs cannot. Thenewly developed fan directs warm air from the LED chips directly to the headlightclear glass cover and thus defrosts it and prevents it from misting up.Dipped beam with 9 individual light modulesMain beamDipped beam and turning lightfrom modules 3 to 9Less energy, more light:the Audi A6 Sedan with all-LED headlights.The Audi R8 was setting standards as early as2008 as the first sports car with all-LEDheadlights. Now this special lighting is alsoavailable for the Audi A6 on request. All-LEDheadlights (optional) not only require lessenergy than standard lighting systems, but alsoprovide a brighter light which is perceived to bemuch more pleasant. The dipped beam consistsof a distinctive line of three individual lightmodules. This makes the Audi A6 unmistakable,even at night. The main beam, daytime runninglights and indicators are also made in LEDtechnology. The use of the same material for allfunctions makes completely new lighting effectspossible. The Audi A6, therefore, has the rightlight for every situation: It has a motorway lightwhich, at speeds above 110 km/h, automaticallyalmost doubles the range of the light cone (fromapprox. 70 m at dipped beam to 120 m withmotorway light). In addition,the A6 Sedan has a combined daytime runninglight/indicator light unit and an all-weatherlight which makes conventional fog lightssuperfluous. The individual LED modules areskilfully controlled to redistribute the light,reducing glare from rain or fog.
