The Order of QurbanaBasic Structure oStructurtructureoff theSyro-Malabar QurbanaThe Syro-Malabar Qurbana is structured after themodel of the Lord’s Prayer. There are three parts in theprayer that our Lord taught us: 1) praises the heavenlyFather, 2) intercedes for needs, and 3) concludes withpraising God. In the Holy Qurbana we can see these threeparts of Lord’s Prayer. The first part of Qurbana is praisingGod. The element of intercession is clearly seen fromkarozuza prayer onwards. The prayers after Holy Communionagain highlight the praises of the Holy Trinity.Liturgies of the Word and the Bread are the twofundamental parts of the Holy Qurbana. The first part is setapart for the proclamation of the Word of God which is doneon the Bema and the second part for the breaking of theBread which is done on the Altar, after the model of theEmmaus event (Lk 24:13-35). In the first part of the Emmausevent, Jesus interpreted to the disciples what referred toHim in all the Scriptures beginning with Moses and all theProphets. And then He led them to the table of the Bread,He took Bread, said the blessing, broke it and gave it to them. The tables of the Word (Bema) and the Bread (Altar) arecommon to all liturgical families. Jesus’ Galilean Ministry (theproclamation of the Word of God) and Jerusalem Ministry(Institution of the Holy Eucharist) are re-presented on thesetwo tables.Different Rites of the Syro-Malabar QurbanaIn addition to the basic division of the Qurbana intothe ministry of the Word of God and of the Bread, the SyroMalabar Qurbana is further understood under seven parts.4

Ip¿ m\ {IawA detailed study of these parts will certainly lead one to abetter understanding of the mystery of the Holy Qurbanaand to an authentic God experience.1. Introductory RiteIt begins with ‘annapesaha thirunnalil’ (as our Lordcommanded) and ends with ‘sarvaadhipanam karthaave’ (thehymn of Resurrection). This part commemorates Jesus’ birth, hidden life, and public appearance to the world at the timeof His Baptism in the river Jordan. The main objectives ofthis part are praising God the Father for the wonderful actsof salvation, and to lead the faithful to an authentic Godexperience. Opening of the sanctuary veil, lighting andincensing of Madbha, and the hymn of ‘ sarvaadhipanamkarthave’ all lead the participants to a heavenly realm.2. Ministry of the Word of GodIt involves the part from sabdhamuyarthi paadiduvin(lift up your voice and sing) to the prayers of blessing afterkarozuza. Jesus’ Galilean ministry is specially commemoratedhere. After having entered into the divine realm through therite of introduction, the faithful praise the holiness of theTrinitarian God and prepare themselves to live in the sameexperience of holiness through hearing the Word of God andpurifying their lives.3.Rite of PreparationIt involves the preparation of the bread and wine, the spiritual preparation of the celebrant and the faithful, bringing gifts from bethgaze to the Altar - a symbolicre-presentation of Christ’s journey to Golgotha -, and offeringof the gifts. The suffering, death and burial of Jesus arespecially commemorated in this part. The memory of BlessedMary, St. Joseph, St. Thomas the Apostle, righteous fathersand martyrs who offered up their life for the Lord, is recalled5

The Order of Qurbanaat the Altar. Before entering into the celebration of Anaphorathe congregation makes the profession of the Creed.4. AnaphoraIt consists of four circles of gehanta prayers. Eachgehanta circle is composed of four elements: a. thecelebrant’s request for help; b. kooshappa – the celebrant’sprayer in a low voice mainly expressing his unworthiness tostand before the Altar of the Lord; c. pranama japam - beingaddressed to the different Persons of the Holy Trinity, theseprayers commemorate the different aspects of the Salvation:Creation, Redemption and Sanctification by the Holy Spiritthrough the life giving mysteries of Baptism and theEucharist; d. kanona – conclusion with praising God for allthe blessings.5. Rite of ReconciliationThis part starts with the prayer for peace (swargavaasikalude samadhanavum) and ends with the karozuza ofreconciliation. The rite of reconciliation is meant for personalsanctification and communion with God and fellow humanbeings. The elevation of the Body and its fraction remindsus again of the death of Jesus which results in human beings’reconciliation with God. Karozuza of reconciliation helps thefaithful to get reconciled with one another.6. Rite of CommunionIt begins with the prayer before the Lord’s Prayerand ends with Holy Communion. Through the reception ofthe Holy Communion, the faithful enter into an authenticcommunion with God. The Body and the Blood of Jesus areintermingled with human nature, so that we might be unitedwith Him. God becomes part of human nature, and therebyhuman beings become participants of divine nature. This is6

Ip¿ m\ {Iawthe most important moment of the earthly dimension ofdivinization, union between God and man.7. Rite of ConclusionAs in the conclusion of the Lord’s Prayer, the prayersafter the Holy Communion are praising God for the wonderfulgift of the Qurbana. The faithful, the server, and the celebrantpraise the Holy Trinity. Their prayers clearly indicate theeschatological character of the communion between God andman, experienced in the Holy Qurbana. The final blessing ofthe Qurbana signifies the blessing of Jesus over the Apostlesbefore His ascension into heaven. The faithful are blessedso that they might give witness to the Lord wherever theyare, by living the command of the Master: “Do this in memoryof me” (Lk 22:19). This command demands from the faithfula genuine life of love towards God and fellow beings afterthe model of the Lord.“By giving the Eucharist the prominence itdeserves, and by being careful not todiminish any of its dimensions or demand,we show that we are truly conscious ofthe greatness of this gift. We are urged todo so by an uninterrupted tradition, whichfrom the first centuries on, has found theChristian community ever vigilant inguarding this “treasure”. Inspired by love, the Church is anxious to hand on to futuregenerations of Christians, without loss, herfaith and teaching with regard to themystery of the Eucharist. There can be nodanger of excess in our care for thismystery, for “in this sacrament isrecapitulated the whole mystery of oursalvation”.St. John Paul II, Ecclesia de Eucharistia, No. 617

The Order of lebrant puts on the sacred vestments, enters the Sanctuary in procession accompanied by the servers, wearing appropriate sacred vestments. Cross, Thurible, candles andthe Gospel are carried in the procession. The servers stand on bothsides of the celebrant. The Gospel isplaced on the left side on the Altar. After bowing to the Altar all go to theBema. Cross is placed in the middle ofthe lighted candles on the table onBema.Congregation stands.C:As our Lord commandedOn the feast of PassoverLet us gather in His holy NameIn unity, let us offer this Sacrifice.A:Let us be reconciledAnd prepare a new AltarWith the love of the Lord JesusLet us offer this Qurbana.OR8C: Let us begin this Qurbana as the Lord hascommanded us.A:It is indeed in accordance with the commandof Christ that we offer this Qurbana.
