General InformationOPERATIONS information &policiesDevelopment Office, Hampton Campus in Room 323 HastingsHall for the hearing impaired.SwitchboardFrom time to time, practical questions arise that directly affect thelives of students at the College. The following are answers to someoften-asked questions.Should a student need to reach a faculty or staff member or anadministrative office and not know the phone number, the studentmay call the switchboard at 757/825-2700. Operation hours arefrom 8 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday - Friday. On the Historic TriangleCampus, the student may call 757/253-4300 between the hours of9 a.m. - 5 p.m., Monday - Friday.Inclement WeatherWhen the weather creates hazardous travel conditions, the collegeadministration will make a decision about canceling or delayingclasses. Closings will be announced on the College’s website. www.tncc.edu. If a student needs the assistance of a campuspolice officer after 10 p.m. Monday - Friday, or on weekends andholidays, he or she should call 9-879-3649 from any ThomasNelson office phone or 757/879-3649 from any residential or payphone. The hearing impaired should use the Virginia Relay System,1/800-828-1120.Medical EmergenciesIf a medical emergency arises between 8 a.m. - 10 p.m. Monday- Friday, call the Office of Campus Police, 757/825-2732. After10 p.m. Monday - Friday, or on weekends and holidays, dial9-879-3649 from any College office phone or 757/879-3649 fromany residential or pay phone. Call boxes are also located throughoutthe Hampton campus. The hearing impaired should use the VirginiaRelay System, 1-800-828-1120. If the caller is unable to get helpwhen calling either of these numbers, contact the Rescue Squad bydialing 911 from any pay phone or 9-911 from any College officeor classroom telephone.Sometimes the Hampton and Historic Triangle campuses experiencedifferent weather conditions. Students should always consult thewebsite www.tncc.edu for announcements about closings at eitheror both campuses.Emergency Evacuation ProceduresIn the event of an emergency where the building must be evacuated,the college fire alarm system may be activated from any pull box.Faculty, staff, and students, other than those assigned specificduties, will: Ensure that all lights, office machines, electrical devices, etc., areturned off. Close and lock all safes, file cabinets, and other recordrepositories. Evacuate all buildings, closing office/classroom doors as theyleave their respective areas, taking all personal belongings withthem. In the event that a physically challenged student is in aclass during an emergency, the instructor conducting the classwill be responsible for ensuring that the individual is evacuatedalong with the rest of the students. Remember that the elevatoris reserved for physically challenged persons. Do not use theelevator in case of fire. Comply with directions issued by authorized college personnel.All personnel will be directed to the nearest area assembly pointuntil further instructions are received. Exercise calmness to move promptly to area assembly points. Remain on campus and not enter the building until a verbal allclear signal has been given by Campus Police or Physical Plant.ELECTRONIC COMMUNICATION(EMAIL)Thomas Nelson Community College issues student emailaddresses to all active students. Email is the primary means forofficial communication within TNCC. The College has the rightto expect that such communications will be received and read ina timely fashion. Official email communications are intended tomeet only the academic and administrative needs of the campuscommunity and will be used for College business (academic andadministrative) only. Students are expected to check their TNCCemail account on a frequent basis in order to remain informed ofCollege communications. It is recommended that students checkemail accounts daily. Students are responsible for the consequencesof not reading College email communications in a timely fashion.All use of email will be consistent with other TNCC policies, andas stated in the TNCC Student Handbook.TelephonesThere are pay phones available for student use in buildings andon campus. General InformationPHOTO ID REQUIREDBuilding HoursThomas Nelson Community College photo IDs are required andare available in the Photo ID Office. To obtain a photo ID, faculty,staff, and students must present some form of pictured identificationand an assigned employee EMPLID/student number.College buildings are unlocked by 6 a.m., Monday - Friday.Buildings are usually locked at 10:30 p.m. Those who need toget into any building at times other than when the buildings areopened, must contact Campus Police for information concerningaccess procedures. For access, students, staff, and faculty shouldcontact Campus Police dispatch at 757/825-2732.The Photo ID offices are located in Room 109 in Diggs Hall,Hampton Campus and Room 111, Historic Triangle Campus.Campus Police is located in Room 153 in Diggs Hall, HamptonCampus and Room 115, Historic Triangle Campus. Should youhave any questions, please call 757/825-3593 in Hampton and757/253-4882 at the Historic Triangle Campus.Children on CampusCurrent college policy dictates that no child under the age of 15years old may be left unsupervised at any time while on the ThomasNelson campus, unless approved by the Vice President for StudentAffairs. Any person who leaves a child unattended may be subjectto disciplinary action or, in the case of a non-student, criminalaction.Lost & Found PropertyThe Office of Campus Police is the receiving department for allfound or abandoned property. If a student finds an item, he or shemay turn it in to the Campus Police in Diggs Hall, Room 153or Room 112, Historic Triangle Campus. The Campus Police willthen make every effort to return the property to its rightful owner.Those who have lost property can report to Room 112, HistoricTriangle Campus, Monday - Friday, during normal business hoursto claim their property. Proof of ownership will be required (brandname, color, ID marks, etc.), as well as a photo ID.Parking DECALS/VEHICLE REGISTRATIONAll vehicles must be registered with the Parking Services Office anddisplay a current College vehicle parking permit. Failure to register avehicle and display a current parking permit may result in a parkingcitation, towing, or wheel locking of the vehicle. Information onhow to obtain a parking decal can be found at ing-services-information/At the Historic Triangle Campus, after one month property will betransported and stored at the Hampton Campus.Visitors may park in a visitor’s parking space or in any nondesignated parking space. Visitors choosing to park in a nondesignated parking space must obtain a visitor’s parking permitfrom the Parking Services Office and display it on the frontdashboard of the vehicle.All unclaimed property will be handled in the following manner:1. Property valued at 100 or less will be held for three months.2. Property valued in excess of 100 will be held for five months.Temporary parking permits are also available in the Office ofCampus Police. The Parking Office is located in Diggs Hall, Room153 Hampton Campus and Room 122 at the Historic TriangleCampus. Potential studentsare requested to display a temporary parking permit obtained fromthe Admissions Office in Griffin Hall, Hampton Campus Room201 or Room 112 on the Historic Triangle Campus.2011-2012 CatalogBulletin BoardsNotices pertaining to College functions and activities are postedregularly on designated bulletin boards around campus. Any itemsto be posted must be approved by the Vice President for StudentAffairs or designee.
