Area InformationCades CoveCades Cove is one of the most popular areas in the national park, just twenty-seven milesfrom Gatlinburg. A wide array of historic buildings, dating back to the late 19th and early20th centuries, are scattered throughout the cove. These include a grist mill, barns, threechurches and a collection of log and frame homes. An eleven mile one-way loop road takevisitors around the cove. The road is open from sunrise to sunset; on some mornings up to10:00am only bicycle and foot traffic are allowed. Deer are almost always seen in the fieldsand sightings of other wildlife are possible.Enjoying the ParkTake Newfound Gap Road, a scenic, high mountain road, which winds up throughNewfound Gap. Along the road are numerous scenic pullouts with superb views. You canpark at the crest of Newfound Gap, where the Appalachian Trail crosses the road. You canalso drive the spur road out to the Clingmas Dome, the highest point in the park and itsobservation tower with panoramic views. Clingmans Dome can be reached via a strenuous1/2-mile hike from the parking lot. To truly experience the beauty of the mountains, parkofficials recommend a closer look. There are some 800 miles of trails leading to waterfalls, coves, balds and rushing streams. The Great Smoky Mountains National ParkThe Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the majestic climax of the AppalachianHighlands, is a 520,000-acre mountain wilderness. It straddles the Tennessee and NorthCarolina border with about a quarter million acres in each state. It attracts some 10 millionvisitors each year making it America’s most popular national park. Many of those visitorsuse Sevier County as their gateway to the park. The same unique combination of scenery, history and recreation that draws visitors from across the country makes the park a favoritedestination for local residents.Other Park Visitors CentersThe National Park also has an information station at the Gatlinburg Welcome Center on US441 and there is a visitors center at Cades Cove in the park. Connecting Sugarlands VisitorsCenter and Oconaluftee Visitors Center (open year-round) at the entrance on the NorthCarolina side of the park, is the Newfound Gap Road, a scenic drive across the Smokies thatis closed to commercial vehicles.10

Area InformationPark Regulations and SafetyThe Great Smoky Mountain National Park is managed as a natural and wild environment.Motorists must drive defensively. Hikers must meet nature on its own terms. If you hikealone, let someone know your plans and schedule, and have proper clothing and gear. Inwinter, gear and clothing should be suitable for survival in deep snow and extreme cold.To prevent accidents, stay on trails, stay off cliff faces, be careful around water, and watchand control children. Pets are permitted in the park if on a leash or under constant physicalcontrol, but are prohibited on trails or cross-country hikes.Sugarlands Visitors CenterFrom the Tennessee side, make your first stop the Sugarlands Visitors Center, located justtwo miles inside the park from Gatlinburg at the intersection of Newfound Gap and LittleRiver Roads. The building is full of information, publications and exhibits. The center’snatural history museum displays animal and plant life found in the park. A slide show givesyou an overview of the park’s history and ecology. There are free maps, pamphlets andbrochures about the park, and the rangers at the desk are well informed and will be gladto answer all your questions and suggest things for you to do and see in the park. TheSugarlands Visitors Center is open all year.A Wildlands SanctuaryThe Great Smoky Mountains are a wildlands sanctuary preserving the world’s finestexamples of temperate deciduous forest. The name smoky comes from smoke-like hazeenveloping the mountains. The park boasts unspoiled forests similar to those early pioneersfound. Restored log cabins and barns stand as reminders of those who carved a livingfrom this wilderness. Fertile soils and abundant rain have encouraged the development ofa world-renowned variety of flora, including more than 1,500 kinds of flowering plants.Broadleaf trees predominate in the coves, while along the crest - at more than 6,000feet elevation - are conifer forests like those found in central Canada. Wild flowers andmigrating birds abound in late April and early May. During June and July rhododendronsbloom in profusion. Autumn’s pageantry of color usually peaks in mid-October. In winter,an unpredictable season, a peace pervades the park. Fog rolling over the mountains mayblanket the conifers in frost.A Word About BearsBears are wild and potentially dangerous. If one approaches your car, stay inside withthe windows closed. Feeding bears and other wildlife encourages the animals to behaveunnaturally and violates the park regulations.11
