Bicycle Crash Data - 2016Local Law 13 of 2011 requires the NYC Department of Transportation (NYCDOT) tocompile the total number of bicycle crashes that are reported to city agencies beginningOctober 1, 2011.Beginning June 1, 2012 and annually thereafter, NYCDOT must provide a report on thetotal number of reported bicycle crashes. This document contains the number ofreported crashes, disaggregated by those involving solely bicycles, between bicycles andmotorized vehicles, and between bicycles and pedestrians, including the number ofinjuries and fatalities resulting from such crashes; and further disaggregated by boroughand by police precinct, for the reporting period of January 1, 2016 to December 31,2016. NYCDOT has further disaggregated crashes involving only bicycles to includecrashes between bicycles and crashes involving a single bicycle. A summary is alsoprovided of injuries and fatalities involving motor vehicles during the same timeperiod. During this period, there were 59,396 injuries and 231 fatalities involving motorvehicles.The number of crashes involving motor vehicles is tabulated from police accidentreports (MV-104 reports), which are reported to NYCDOT by the NYC Police Department(NYPD). The number of crashes involving bicycles, but not involving motor vehicles, isalso tabulated from MV-104 reports filed by NYPD in response to incidents that do notinvolve a motor vehicle, and reported to NYCDOT by NYPD.For information on bicycle safety, see the NYC Cycling Risk Indicator, which describeschanges in cyclist safety over the past decade while accounting for the increase inbicycle use in New York City.
