Provide senior evidence based WHS thought leadership to senior and frontline leaders to day to dayactivities and projects to improve WHS engagement and implementation. Provide leadership on emerging trends in health and safety, and significantly contribute in thedevelopment of system elements consistent with contempory WHS theory and best practice. Provide senior technical leadership within a customer team through the provision of advice or tacticalinput and decision making. Partner with business leaders to proactively identify future areas of risk, injury, drift and provide regularinsights to all levels of the business through trend analysis, interactions, observations, audits andinspections; and identify and recommend systemic improvements arising from the insightsSunshine Coast Council – 2001 – Health and Safety Advisor2

Foster a culture of psychological safety, trust, open communication and learning that drives aconstructive culture. Understand Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) and apply principles toWHS system improvement Train, coach and mentor customers to interpret, apply and identify systemic improvements in the SafetyManagement System Facilitate and continually refine the learning processes that seek to narrow the gap between ‘work asimagined’ and ‘the work as done’ Support the local safety practices of front line teams and participate in safety in design, risk assessmentor hazard identification workshops as required Undertake tender reviews with an understanding of critical risk associated with scope of work. Provideadvice on tender submission WHS components in tender evaluation meetings. Adopt an effective business partnering strategy, coach leaders and team members to autonomouslymake decisions to safely adapt their work to emerging situations, and manage and reduce the goalconflicts between production, cost and safety obligations; and when unresolvable challenges ariseescalate concerns Contribute to continuous improvement of the organisation’s health and safety system. This includes theimprovement of WHS management systems, annual safety management plans, safety culture andstrategy, policies, procedures, investigations, audits, safety performance management and reporting,and initiatives through application of formal change management processes Participate in compliance activities related to regulatory WHS requirements as measured through auditsand other monitoring mechanisms Assist with the provision of planning and delivery of WHS training across the organisation to ensurecompliance with statutory and industry best practice requirements Demonstrate safe work behaviours, abiding by procedures, identifying and reporting hazards, andcontributing to all aspects of a safe workplace culture Undertake WHS investigations utilising contemporary methodology to ensure a just culture is maintained Attend safety committee meetings, toolbox talks and other health and safety related meetings asrequired Lead and manage other team members. Responsible for the compliant capture and secure use of public records in line with Sunshine CoastCouncil Records Management Policy during the conduct of daily business. Participate in the development of a healthy and safe workplace. Embracing initiatives, information andtraining and incorporating safety into all daily activities. Encourages the support of relevantstakeholders.Key RequirementsMandatory Requirements / Experience Relevant undergraduate degree in WH&S or other and/or equivalent relevant experience. Demonstrated ability and experience in delivery of WHS projects leading a team in a large and diverseorganisation. Substantial experience as a safety professional in construction, heavy industry or mining environmentswith demonstrated ability to manage complex and sensitive investigations and lead WH&S intiatives. Strong leadership skills and demonstrated ability to positively lead, inspire and empower others, drivehigh performance, develop and coach team members, and foster a workplace culture consistent withCouncil’s corporate values. Highly developed interpersonal and communication skills with particular emphasis in the areas ofbuilding effective relationships, consultation, negotiation, conflict resolution and assertiveness in order toresolve issues and meet changing organisational needs.
