Novel contains a complex storythat can invite readers to imagine.Novelscaninformthestorymoredetails, define something freely, andinvolvemorecomplexproblems(Nurgiyantoro, 2005: 11).100Literature relates to intrinsic andextrinsic elements. Nurgiyantoro (2002)said that the intrinsic elements are theelements that build its own literature.Meanwhile, extrinsicelementsofliterature are things that are beyondthe literary structure, but greatlyaffect the literary work. For example, the background factors of the author’slife, economic factors and so on.In this research, the researcherinterests to observe futher the one ofintrinsic elements in novel, namelyIndah, Nurochman, Setiarini, The Superiority in.

Attitude, feelings, expression, and temperament that willmanifest in a person's actions when theyare faced with certain situations. Thecharacter in the novel is portrayed bythe author called the characterization.Characterization made the reader knowhow story goes and how the character’scharacteristic is.The researcher wants to analyze oneoftheintrinsicelementsofthecharacter in a literary work is novelbasedontheIndividualPsychologyTheory by Alfred Adler. Alfred AdlerExplains the seven principles by using atheory of individual psychology, one ty is a constant effort tobe better, to approach the purpose ofwhat people want to achieve. People tryhard not to be better, but to control.By striving to be a superior, peoplefeel themselves completely. LITERATURE REVIEW2.1 Definition of Literature andNovelLiterature has been widely known by manypeopleandexperts.Theword‘literature’ is derived from the word‘littera’ in Latin, which means letter. It refers to the written or printedwords. According to Semi (1988:8), the101

literature is a form of creative art andthe work of the object is human and lifeusing the language as a medium. Based onTaum (1997:13), literature is a work offictionwhichisimaginativeandliterature is beautiful and a usefullanguageusethatsignifiesotherthings.Novel is work of fiction prosewritten in a narrative, usually in theform of a story. Sudjiman (1998: 53)said that the novel is a prose fictionthat presents a character and displays aseries of events and the background arecomposed. Novel as a work of imaginativereveals the aspects of deep humanitarianand present subtly. Novel is not only asan entertainment tool, but also as anartformthatisstudyingandresearching aspects of life and thevalues of good and bad (moral) in thislife and directs the reader of cordingtoNurgiyantoro(2005:23)instrinsic element are the elements thatbuild literary work itself. Intrinsicelement is what causes the presentliterature as literature. The elementsaretheme, characterandcharacterization, plot, setting, styleof language, point of view and areessentialelements that establish a literary work.Wellek and Werren (in Nurgiyantoro,2005:24) said that the extrinsic elementconsists of a number of elements. l conditions of author, suchas political, economic and social andthe view of life of a nation. In a literary work, the authorscertainly presents characterizations indifferent ways. According to Minderop(2005:3),characterizationofthecharacter can be reviewed by the rectmethod(showing), point of view method, streamof consciousness and figurative languagestudy method.1022.3 Psychology LiteraturePsychology literature is the analysis ofthe text by considering the relevanceandroleofpsychologicalstudies.According to Ratna (2004: 350), thepsychology literature is the analysis ofthe text by considering the relevanceand role of psychological studies. Thismeans that psychology plays an importantrole when analyzing a literary work byworkingfromthecornerofthepsychiatric literature the author eitherof the elements, characters or readers. In this psychology literature, theresearcher identified several theoriesthatcanbeusedtoanalyzethepsychology in literary works of variouselements. However, theresearcherthought that this research is verysuitable to use the theory of IndividualPsychology by Alfred Adler.2.4 Individual PsychologyIn this study, the researcher wants toanalyze the character in the novel whichbased on the theory of IndividualPsychology by Alfred Adler. Adler saidinhisbookentitledJournalofHumanistic Psychology that humans aresocial beings. Individual is formed bythe social environment and the uniqueinteraction, not by efforts to achieve abiological satisfaction. According toAdler, the main of individual areconscious human beings have the freedomtoorganizethemselvesandsetthemselves on purpose, not governed byexternalfactorsthatcannotbecontrolled.Adler, in his Journal of HumanisticPsychology (1990) classifying individualtheory into seven principles, namely :1. Inferiority Principle2. Superiority Principle3. Life Style Principle4. Creative Self Principle5. Conscious Self Principle6. Fictional Goals Principle7. Social Interest PrincipleIndah, Nurochman, Setiarini, The Superiority in.

2.5 Superiority PrincipleSuperiority principle is one of theindividual psychology theories stated ominferiorityprinciple is wrong, because these twoprinciples is closely and complementary. However, as a principle, the two termsare different, so that the discussionwasdistinguished, despiteinoperational is can not be separated.Adler assumed that human are aggressiveand should always aggressive when theywant to survive. Then, this aggressiveimpulsive grows into the impulsive tofindimpetus to find strength, bothphysically and symbolically to survive.People want power and from this conceptgrows that people expect to nefforttoleaveinferiorityfeeling, but superior inhere is not a power to surpass others, but an effort to reach the superiorcondition and is not always to competewithothers.Thissuperiorityissuperior on self. People have manydifferent way to be a superior. Adlerconsidered this is a lifestyle. Thislifestyle followed by a combination oftwo things, namely the inner self drivenbehaviors that set the direction andencouragement from the environment thatwould increase or inhibit the impulse bythe inside. Looked superiority principleseparate from inferiority principle.3. RESEARCH METHODOLOGY3.1 Research DesignThe method used in this research isdescriptivequalitativemethod.According to I Made Wirartha (2006:155)descriptive qualitative is a method toanalyze, describe, and summarize thevariousconditions, situationsandvarious data collected in the form ofresults or observations, interview orstudied problems that occur in thefield.3.2 Source of DataAs the source of data, the writer usedFifty Shades trilogy, they are FiftyShades of Grey, Fifty Shades Darker andFifty Shades Freed as the main data.Jurnal Ilmiah Sastra Volume 4. (Fifty Shades Darker –15:360)4.2 The FormsSuperiorityofExpressionofSuperiority is the form of attitudewhich people feel better than others.According to Oxford Advanced Learner’sDictionary is show by your behaviourthat you think you are better thanothers. Superiority is the state orquality of being better, more skilful,Jurnal Ilmiah Sastra Volume 4. No. 1, Juni 2016more powerful, greater, etc.than erioritysupremacy;majority. In this chapter, the writer wants toanalyzed to solve the second problemformulation that superior that shows byChristian Grey in the novel. Grey hasmany things in his life so that he feelhe is superior than others. There are many dialogues or scenethat writer found in the novel thatshows the superiorities in ChristianGrey. The writer refers to the theory ofIndividual Psychology by Alfred Adler, where people wants to be superior.Christian Grey, with any wealth that heowned surely made him to be superior.1. AttittudeThewriterseetheformsofexpression of superiority from ChristianGrey by looking some aspects. One of theaspects is an attitude. The writer knowsthe superiority shown in Christian Greybased on his attitude. One of thedialogue that writer found in the novelthat shows the superiority in ChristianGrey based on his attitude. The firstthing is attittude.“If you’re looking for your jeans, I’vesent them to the laundry.” His gaze isdark.“Oh.” I flush scarlet. Why oh why doeshe always catch me off balance?“I sent Taylor out for another pair andsome shoes. They’re in the bag on thechair.” (Fifty Shades of Grey – 5:6).2. ExpressionTheotheraspectsthattheresearcher found as forms of expressionof superiority from him. The writerfound many evidence that histhoughtshown the forms of superiority inhimself in dialogues in novel. One ofthe dialogues is when Christian wasinterviewed by Anastasia Steele in hisoffice.“Business is all about people, MissSteele, and I’m very good at judgingpeople. I know how they tick, what makesthemflourish, whatdoesn’t,whatinspires them, and how to incentivizethem. I employ an exceptional team, andI reward them well.” He pauses and fixesme with his gray stare. “My belief is to105

achieve success in any scheme one has tomake oneself master of that scheme, knowit inside and out, know every detail. Iwork hard, very hard to do that. I makedecisions based on logic and facts. Ihave a natural gut instinct that canspot and nurture a good solid idea andgood people. The bottom line is, it’salways down to good people.” (FiftyShades of Grey – 1:10)3. Face ExpressionThe writer knows the superiorityshown in Christian Grey by looking hisfaceexpression.Apersonwhoissuperior always shows their expressionas an expression shows indirectly thatthe other person is not better thanthem. Face expression can show howperson feel themselves is superior.“Don’t you have a board to answer to?” Iask, disgusted.“I own my company. I don’t have toanswer to a board.” He raises an eyebrowat me (Fifty Shades of Grey – 1:11).4.3 The Factors Influence theAppearance of the SuperioritySuperiority is one of the interestingtopics to analyzed. Alfred Adler statedin his Journal of Humanistic Psychologyin his Individual Psychology Theory. , 1993: 220) explains thatinferiority is any less valuable sensearisingfromtheinabilityofpsychological or social or subjectivelyperceived as less than perfect physicalstate. The inferiority appears in ahumanslife, butpeopletrytocompensate their weakness with their allpower. In this effort, the compensationis decided by lifestyle and effort to besuperior.Someone who is superior usually hasbeen through the phases of inferiorit. They know their weaknesses and try tocompensate to turn it into a betterthing so they get a positive result. Theurge to be superior this is an attemptto leave a feeling of inferioritybecausepeoplewantapowerandperfection. Superior is not the power toexceed other people, but efforts toachieve a superior in self that was106driven by the factors which shapehuman’s behavior and encourage them toachieve superiority.Christian Grey is a character thatshows superiority in himself based onthe Fifty Shades trilogy. After read allof the novels, the writer knows thatthere are many factors that was drivenChristian shows the superiority.1. Dark Past TimeChristianGreyisknownasasuccessful young entrepreneur. He lookshandsome, prestigious, smart, brave, impressive. He is a rich man. He is aCEO in his own company namely GreyEntreprises Holdings. This dark past time dividedinto some parts to describe cleary whatChristian Grey has been through until hecan be a superior.A. TormentIn dark past time, Christian Greyever been experienced tormented.Torment cause to experience severmentalorphysicalsuffering.Tormented is certainly the one thatforms the Christian personality as asuperior. He was trying to beat hisdark pastby being superior forhimself or for others. There aresome tormented that was experiencedby Christian Grey. The writer foundthe dialogue that shows ChristianGrey has a trauma that caused bytorture that he experienced. Thetormented that was experienced byChristian as mental and physicalsuffering. One of the evindencesthat shows Christian Grey has everbe tormented in his past time canseen below. When Christian looked ather mom that was hits by her pimp.B. Sexual ViolenceThereareseveralfactorsthatinfluence the appearances of thesuperiority in Christian Grey. Afterreadingthenovel, thewriterrealized that there are some aspectsinfluence why superiority appears inIndah, Nurochman, Setiarini, The Superiority in.

This term is a sexualpractice that involves pain duringsex and violence and hurt themselvesor couples to achieve satisfaction.Thesexualviolencethatwasexperienced by Christian since hischildhood by his mother’s friend strilogy.Based on the characteristic thatwas made by the writer in ChristianGrey, one of them is control-freak.In the game of BDSM, there isdivided into two parts, they aremaster(dominant)andslave(submissive). The dominant holdscontrol over all activities, whilesubmissive loses its power over thebody and mind. During experiencedsexual violence by Mrs. Robinson,Grey acts as a submissive. For many years that he has beenthrough until Mrs. Robinson did notdo any sexual violence anymore,Christiantraumasandhisexperienced made him as a dominantcharacter. His experiences as asubmissive in sexual violence madehim as a control-freak person. Hewants to control a lot of things toshow that he is a dominant. Thisexperiences made a superiority inhimself.Therearealotofevidences that the writer found thatChristian experienced any sexualviolence in the novel.Jurnal Ilmiah Sastra Volume 4. No. 1, Juni 2016C. spasttimeispoornerss. He has ever been feelhunger and could not eat anything.Helivedwithdeprivation.Thewriter found some dialogues thatshows Christian Grey is a poor childbefore he was adopted.“Sometimes in the dreams she’s justlying on the floor. And I thinkshe’s asleep. But she doesn’t move. She never moves. And I’m hungry.Really hungry.” (Fifty Shades Darker– 15:345)2. SuccesfulA person who is a superior alwaysthrough many experiences in their lives. They must be have an inferiority feelingthat push them to be better and reachthe perfection called as superiority.Christian Grey has been through hisinferiority time in his childhood. Afterhe has been through his inferiorityfeeling, he passed any succesfull in hislife as an entrepreneur in his owncompany.Based on his past life, Christianluckily was adopted by a rich family, but his successful is not he getswithout an effort. He ever felt howbecame poor, how feel hunger and heknows how hard his life is. After he wasadopted, his adoptive parents send himinto the school. After all, he majoredin economics at Harvard. Based on histitle, he tried to build things and nowhe proved that he can be successful inhis business. Heproved it and get majored in economicsthen made him try to do business andhas his own company. Finally, after hewastryingsohard, hegotanachievement in his life, a succesfull. After reading the novel, the writerknows that Christian compensate hisdark past time by work hard and heproved that he reached the succesfullas young entrepreneur. His successfulis not he got easily without an effort.107

He works hard to success and he ownedhis company.“Do you feel that you have immensepower?3. Wealth“I employ over forty thousand people,Miss Steele. That gives me a certainsense of responsibility power, if youwill. If I were to decide I was nolongerinterestedinthetelecommunications business and sell, twenty thousand people would struggle tomake their mortgage payments after amonth or so.” (Fifty Shades of Grey 1:11)A person who successfully certainlyhas a wealth. Christian Grey known as asuccessful entrepreneur. His age isstill very young, but he has reachedmany achievement in his life. Successfulmade Christian Grey as a rich man. Hehas much money, transportation and etc.His wealth is one of the factors thatinfluences the superiority appears inChristian Grey. He has been lived poorlyand after he was adopted by a richfamily, heworkshardandreachsuccessful and become one of the richestentrepreneur. The writer found some evidences thatshows Christian Grey is a rich man. Hiswealth made him as superior and feelthat he is better than others. One ofthe evidences is when Ana is picking upher backpack, she wander upstairs to herbedroom and check out the walk-incloset. It’s still full of clothes-allbrandnewwithpricetagsstillattached.“I check the tag on one of the eveningdresses: 2,998. Holy fuck. I sink tothe floor.”“This isn’t me.
