Handbook StudyMary Teaches UsThis month I would like to focus our attentionon Lourdes on the occasion of the 150thAnniversary of the apparitions of Our Ladythere.never absent from us. Her maternal heart isalways and everywhere focused on each one ofus. But Mary herself has made Lourdes extraspecial. She has made it a place of intenseeducation in the faith, of profound healing andconversion but above all a meeting place withJesus and involvement with the work ofredemption.Mary teaches us with signs and words and byher very presence. Today, following theexample of Pope Benedict at Lourdes, I wish toconcentrate on one of those signs. Youremember the scene. At the first sight of theapparition, Bernadette instinctively tries tomake the sign of the Cross but she couldn'traise her arm no matter how she tried. ThenMary blessed herself with the sign of the Crossand Bernadette was then able to make it too. Atthe beginning of all eighteen appearances ofOur Lady they begin the Rosary together withthis simple, yet profound, sign of our Faith.Bernadette was never to forget the way Marymade the sign of the Cross and this signbecame very precious to her. We too asLourdes is a sacred place, one of the greatlegionaries begin everything with the sign ofshrines in the Christian world, a place ofthe Cross. Five times we bless ourselves in thepilgrimage. It is a place that has manymemories for the Legion. But it is much more. course of every Legion meeting. It would beIt is a school and the principal teacher is Mary. good to reflect on its meaning and formativeIt is true that we do not have to go to Lourdes value.to meet and converse with Our Lady. We canmeet her anywhere and at any time simply by Let me quote Pope Benedict from one of hishomilies at Lourdes: 'This is the great mysterystopping where we are and quietly turning toher. Our relationship to Mary is not limited to that Mary also entrusts to us this morning, inviting us to turn towards her Son. In fact, it isany place or time. She is our Mother and isMary’s NotebookIssue 30, December08 - January 2009page 3 of 10

significant that, during the first apparition toBernadette, Mary begins the encounter with thesign of the Cross. More than a simple sign, it isan initiation into the mysteries of the faith thatBernadette receives from Mary. The sign of theCross is a kind of synthesis of our faith, for ittells how much God loves us; it tells us thatthere is a love in this world that is strongerthan death, stronger than our weaknesses andsins. The power of love is stronger than theevil which threatens us. It is this mystery of theuniversality of God's love for men that Marycame to reveal here, in Lourdes. She invites allpeople of good will, all those who suffer inheart or body, to raise their eyes towards theCross of Jesus, so as to discover there thesource of life, the source of salvation.' One ofthe great truths that Mary teaches us at Lourdesis the centrality of the Cross of Christ in ourlives. Everything is given to us on the Cross. There is nothing more to give. The sign of theCross is the sign of our redemption. Thissimple sign tells us that the infinite treasures ofthe Heart of Christ are offered to us.sovereign majesty, he reveals to us that he isexalted in glory. Yes, "Come, let us adorehim!" In our midst is he who loved us even togiving his life for us, he who invites everyhuman being to draw near to him with trust. The Cross of Christ is central to our prayer lifethrough the Mass and the Sacrament ofPenance, the sorrowful mysteries of the Rosaryand the Stations of the Cross and the frequentblessing of ourselves. But it is also aninstrument in our work of evangelization. Weremember the little story that our Founder tellsin several articles and letters: 'A Protestant hadbeen attending some of our functions for a longtime. One day Bro Hanratty said to him: "Is itnot a peculiarity that a good man like youshould refuse to make the Sign of the Crosswhich has always been the acknowledgedsymbol of our Redemption". The next timethey met, the other solemnly blessed himselfand said: "You made a point there, John. It istime I step into the Church". Sequel: a dailyCommunicant who valued his new faithsupremely. God makes use of every littleLike the Church as a whole so the Legion, in circumstance to lead people into the Church, but we must provide those circumstances.particular, must be riveted on the Cross ofOperation must enter in somewhere.' MaryChrist. "In order to be healed from sin, gazestood by the Cross and she wanted the wholeupon Christ crucified!" said Saint Augustine(Treatise on Saint John XII, II). By raising our world to look to the sign of the Cross ateyes towards the Crucified one, we adore him Lourdes and surely this is a major part of thewho came to take upon himself the sin of the apostolate of the Legion. We need to be able toexplain the meaning of the Cross to those weworld and to give us eternal life. And themeet especially the non-Christian person andChurch invites us proudly to lift up thisglorious Cross so that the world can see the full we must enable them one day to blessthemselves with the sign of the Cross.extent of the love of the Crucified one formankind, for every man and woman. Sheinvites us to give thanks to God because from a Concilium Allocutio September 2008tree, which brought death, life has burst outby Fr. Bede McGregor O.P.anew. Divine MysteriesPraying the Rosaryby By Bishop Fulton J. Sheentelephone book is chained, too, but it s moreconsulted than any book in moderncivilization! The people who could not read one hundredand fifty Psalms wanted to do something tomake up for it. Therefore, they substituted onehundred and fifty Hail Marys. They broke upthese one hundred and fifty, in the manner ofthe Akathist, into fifteen decades, or series often. Each part was to be said while meditatingon a different aspect of the Life of Our Lord.To keep the decades separate, each one of thembegan with the Our Father and ended with theDoxology of Praise to the Trinity. From the earliest days, the Church asked itsfaithful to recite the one hundred and fiftyPsalms of David. This custom still prevailsamong priests, who recite some of thesePsalms every day. However, it was not easy foranyone to memorize the one hundred and fiftyPsalms. Then, too, before the invention ofprinting, it was difficult to procure a book ofthe Psalms. That is why certain importantbooks like the Bible had to be chained liketelephone books are today; otherwise peoplewould have run off with them.St. Dominic, who died in 1221, received fromthe Blessed Mother the command to preachand to popularize this devotion for the good ofsouls, for conquest over evil, and for theprosperity of Holy Mother Church and thusgave us the Rosary in its present classical form. The Black Death, which ravaged all Europeand wiped out one-third of its population, prompted the faithful to cry out to the Motherof Our Lord to protect them, at a time when thepresent moment and death were almost one.The Black Death has ended. But now the RedDeath of Communism is sweeping the earthIncidentally, this gave rise to the stupid lie that (circa 1950). I find it interesting that, when thethe Church would not allow anyone to read the Blessed Mother appeared at Fatima in 1917because of the great decline in morals and theBible, because it was chained. The fact is, itwas chained just so people could read it. The advent of godlessness, she asked that, after theMary’s NotebookIssue 30, December08 - January 2009page 5 of 10

"Glory be" we add "have mercy on all souls;save them from hell and lead us to heaven."It is objected that there is much repetition inthe Rosary because the Lord's Prayer and theHail Mary are said so often; therefore some sayit is monotonous.Love is never monotonous in the uniformity ofits expression. The mind is infinitely variablein its language, but the heart is not. The heartof a man, in the face of the woman he loves, istoo poor to translate the infinity of his affectioninto a different word. So the heart takes oneexpression, "I love you," and in saying it overand over again, it never repeats. It is the onlyreal news in the universe. That is what we dowhen we say the Rosary, we are saying to God,the Trinity, to the Incarnate Savior, to theBlessed Mother: "I love you, I love you, I loveyou."That reminds me of a woman who came to seeme one evening after instructions. She said, "Iwould never become a Catholic. You say thesame words in the Rosary over and over again, and anyone who repeats the same words isnever sincere. I would never believe anyonewho repeated his words and neither wouldGod."Each time it means something differentbecause, at each decade, our mind is moving toI asked her who the man was with her. She said a new demonstration of the Savior’s love.he was her fiancé. I asked: "Does he loveyou?" "Certainly, he does," "But how do you The Rosary is the best therapy for theseknow?" "He told me." "What did he say?"distraught, unhappy, fearful, and frustratedsouls, precisely because it involves the"He said 'I love you.'"simultaneous use of three powers: the physical, the vocal, and the spiritual, and in that order."When did he tell you last?""About an hour ago.""Did he tell you before?""Yes, last night.""What did he say?""I love you.""But never before?""He tells me every night."The Rosary is the book of the blind, wheresouls see and there enact the greatest drama oflove the world has ever known; it is the bookof the simple, which initiates them intomysteries and knowledge more satisfying thanthe education of other men; it is the book of theaged, whose eyes close upon the shadow ofthis world, and open on the substance of thenext. Legion SpiritThe Christmas SpiritWhat is special about Christmas?Christmas is when we celebrate the birth ofour lord and savior Jesus Christ. For many reasons it is very important andspecial that God became man, some include: By his birth, after having taken humanform, at the annunciation, God madeHimself accessible to the visiblesenses of man. Before Christmas noone knew what God looked like; nowwe can draw pictures, write Icons, andmake statues of God, for he has nowmade himself visible to us. His birth in Bethlehem fulfils theancient prophecy. His choice of birth in a manger to apoor family shows us the value ofhumility and the unimportance ofwealth.Who is Santa Clause?Santa Clause is another name for St.Nicholas.When a man in town had lost all his moneyand, that man was going to put his daughtersin the prostitution business to put food on thetable. St. Nicholas took a bag of his gold, snuck in at night, and threw the gold into anopen window in the house as a dowry for theeldest daughter. Later he did the same forthe other two daughters, allowing them tohave a proper marriage, rather than turn toprostitution. After his death, people in histown, Myra, eventually realized that he hadgiven a large number of similar giftsanomalously. In Myra, even some time afterhis death, the people of Myra would oftengive unanimous gifts to those in need sayingthey were from St. Nicholas. From thiscomes the tradition of St. Nick or SantaClause leaving presents. Namely, that thepresents come from an anonymous source, giving the gift out of his love of Christ.St. Nicholas was not likely fat. Although hewas well off, he was a very modest eater. Henot only kept the traditional Eastern Fasts onWednesday and Friday, but, even from theearliest age he ate only one meal onWednesdays and Fridays.St. Nicholas lived from 270 – 342. He wasthe son of wealthy parents who died when he St. Nicholas served as the Bishop of Myra, aswas never married, but did have a beard.was young. He was a very devout GreekCatholic who practices extreme devotion andpiety.Mary’s NotebookIssue 30, December08 - January 2009page 7 of 10

What is the real meaning of the song the 12days of Christmas?(The answer above is excerpted from A Handbook of Catholic Sacraments, byAnn Ball and published by Our Sunday Visitor.)From 1558 to 1829, when Catholics inWhat is the Icon of the #ativity?England were not permitted to practice theirfaith openly, "The Twelve Days ofChristmas" was written as a catechism songfor young Catholics. The hidden meaningsof the song's gifts were intended to help thechildren remember lessons of their faith. The "true love" mentioned in the song refersto God Himself. The "me" who receives thepresents is every baptized person. Thepartridge in a pear tree is Jesus Christ. In thesong, Christ is symbolically presented as amother partridge, which feigns injury todecoy predators from her helpless nestlings. The meanings of the other symbols are: Two Turtle Doves - the Old and NewTestaments Three French Hens - Faith, Hope, andCharity Four Calling Birds - the four Gospels Five Golden Rings - the first fivebooks of the Old Testament ThePentateuch Six Geese A-Laying - the six days ofcreation Seven Swans A-Swimming - theseven gifts of the Holy Spirit Eight Maids A-Milking - the eightBeatitudes Nine Ladies Dancing - the nine fruitsof the Holy Spirit Ten Lords A-Leaping - the TenCommandments Eleven Pipers Piping - the elevenfaithful disciples Twelve Drummers Drumming - thetwelve points of belief in the ApostlesCreedMary’s NotebookThe Star represents that Jesus is the Light ofthe world and came down from Heaven.Midwives wrap Jesus in swaddling cloth, showing He became man and was born bythe normal way (and thus needed to becleaned after birth). The Magi, whoworshiped the stars, were led to the true lightof the world; all who search for truth findChrist. They brought Him gold, frankincense, and myrrh; gold because Jesusis king; frankincense because He is highpriest; myrrh because He will die for oursins. The angels spread the good news to theshepherds, as Jesus is the true shepherd andHe, in the Eucharist, is the unity ofChristians. unbelief, and doubt, which we must strugglethough. Mary is in the center, with Jesus, asthe mother of the light. She looks towardsJoseph, who is at the bottom left, tostrengthen him. Joseph, an old man and awidower is shown as and weighed down bydoubts of the origins of Christ, which heovercomes. Satan is depicted as an old manin rags with a cane tempting Joseph, who isthe protector of the Holy Family. How does the Christmas tree fit intoChristmas? The Christmas tree is an ancient tradition thatexalts the value of life, for in the winterseason the evergreen fir becomes a sign ofundying life. Christmas gifts are usuallyplaced on the tree or arranged at its base. Thesymbol thus also becomes eloquent in atypically Christian sense: it calls to mind the"tree of life" (cf. Gn 2: 9), a figure of Christ,God's supreme gift to humanity.forgiveness, in time shared and reciprocallistening.(The answer above in an excerpt taken from Pope John Paul II’s Angelusmessage on Fourth Sunday of Advent, 19 December 2004)When is the Christmas Season? For Catholics following the ordinary form ofthe Latin rite (this includes the vast majorityof Catholics in the U.S.), the ChristmasSeason starts on Christmas Eve, the eveningof December 24th. It ends on the feast of theBaptism of the Lord. This falls on theSunday closest to January 13th.Was Christmas ever Illegal in the U.S?From 1647 to 1660, when the Puritansgoverned England (and U.S. colonies werepart of England) the English outlawedChristmas. Christmas was also outlawedfrom 1659 to 1681 in Boston. The Bostonlaw read:For preventing disorders, arising in severalplaces within this jurisdiction by reason ofsome still observing such festivals as weresuperstitiously kept in other communities, tothe great dishonor of God and offense ofothers: it is therefore ordered by this courtand the authority thereof that whosoevershall be found observing any such day asChristmas or the like, either by forbearing oflabor, feasting, or any other way, upon anysuch account as aforesaid, every such personso offending shall pay for every such offencefive shilling as a fine to the county."The message of the Christmas tree isconsequently that life stays "evergreen" if wemake a gift of it: not so much of materialthings, but of life itself: in friendship andsincere affection, in fraternal help andMary’s NotebookFrom the records of the General Court,Massachusetts Bay ColonyMay 11, 1659Issue 30, December08 - January 2009page 9 of 10
