IMMAINVITED CURATORThe Plough and other starsInvited Curator Kate Strain15 September 2016 — January 2017 / Main Galleries, East WingThere is a human instinct to claim in language that whichlies beyond our capacity to understand. This exhibitionof new work explores this narrative impulse throughcontemporary art practice, by staging a set of overlappingimages, ideas and intuitions in time and space.Riccardo Arena presents a celestial collage basedon his extensive research into the Solovki Islands, and Russian cosmism; a movement promoting lifeextension by any means and in this case through thetranscendental potential of aeronautical and spacetravel. Richard John Jones creates a series of fabricbanners and ceramic sculptures, inspired by thefictional fourteenth century travel memoirs of Sir JohnMandeville. Khaldi and Khalili present a live lectureperformance, Love Letter to Mars, exploring ideasaround loss and distance, travel and disappearance.01S E PT 2016 — J A N 2017F E AT U R E D A R T I S T S : RiccardoArena, Richard John Jones, LaraKhaldi, Yazan KhaliliI M AG E Richard John Jones /Strategic Assemblages (flag) /in collaboration with MichaelOswell / 2014.LIVE EVENTSat 26 Nov 2016,Lecture PerformanceLove Letter to Mars

INVITED CURATORHistorica — Republican AestheticsInvited Curator Sumesh Sharma15 September 2016 — January 2017 / Main Galleries, East WingConsidering colonisation, independence, andnationhood, Historica imagines ‘the nation’ as aconceptual project and ‘modernism’ as an aspirationalvalue. Colonisation was based on the superiority of anation – be that language, religion or race but doesadherence to religions, languages and race definethe modern democratic state? This exhibition askswhether nationalism in post-colonial societies, thoughdemocratic and secular, curbs its citizens fundamentalrights of freedom such as one's right over sexuality, gender and body.Historica considers the state's responsibility towardsart and its aims, by way of the museum concept, tocontinue the modernism project as way to constructnational identity based on a constitution.W W W. IMMAEXHIBITIONJaki IrvineIf the Ground Should Open 23 September 2016 — January 2017 / Courtyard Galleries, East GroundThis new commission for IMMA If the Ground ShouldOpen is presented here for the first time on theoccasion of the centenary of the historic Easter uprisingsof 1916. This new work takes as a point of departureIrvine’s 2013 novel ‘Days of Surrender’, which focuses onElizabeth O’Farrell and Julia Grenan. These were two ofmore than a hundred women who were ready to die or killfor the possibility of a different Ireland but whose storieswere all but written out of official Irish history, consignedto the margins as the narrative was masculinised. This new video and sound installation uses their namesas the ground of a score for 9 musicians. In this way theyare performed and remembered, becoming part of theground we walk on in 2016.If the Ground Should Open. is part of the official Ireland2016 Programme.03S E PT 2016 — J A N 2017I M AG E If the Ground ShouldOpen / 2016 detail / Courtesy ofJaki Irvine, Kerlin Gallery & FrithSt. Gallery.LIVE EVENTTues 13 Dec 2016,Great Hall 8 Online bookingopens 23 Sept
