This code regulates all high temperature,high pressure boilers where steam pressure exceeds 15 psig, waterpressure exceeds 160 psig, or temperature exceeds 250 Fahrenheit.Typical external piping applications include the transportation ofsteam, water, oil, gas, or oxygen.IdentificationExternal boiler piping is generally considered to be piping attacheddirectly to the boiler, where the first circumferential joint begins, thefirst bolted flange connector begins, or the first threaded connectorjoint begins. External boiler piping may be identified by the verificationof proper inspection and stamping codes located on the piping, whichis set in accordance with the ASME Boiler and pressure vesselspecification.
ANSI/ASME B31.1 power pipingCode exclusionsCertain types of piping are excluded from the regulatory codeestablished by the ASME B31.1 Power Piping specification.Excluded piping elements include building heating anddistribution steam and condensate piping designed for 15(psig) or less, hot water heating systems designed for 30(psig) or less, piping for hydraulic or pneumatic tools, andpiping for marine or other installations currently under Federalcontrol. Structural non-piping building elements, such astowers, building frames, tanks, mechanical equipment,instruments, and foundations are also excluded from theASME B31.1 power piping specification.
