Students name the agency, create a mission statement and intakeform, as well as develop policies for the counselors and clients. Clients are hired actors, who arelicensed mental health professionals (either LPCs or Social Workers). Students conduct 8-9counseling sessions with these paid actors and participate in case consultation in order to createthe most realistic practicum and internship experience and to better prepare them for their fieldwork.Fall 2010: CNSL- A776: Measurement and Assessment:Partnered with the Loyola Counseling Center to have the students in this course conduct theBeck Depression Inventory (BDI) in the student center for any student on campus who elected totake the screening. Students experience giving, scoring and discussing results with participants.Any participant who was assessed as needing to see a staff counselor either immediately or toschedule an appointment, was referred by the student to the staff counselor who was available inthe screening area. This is now a routine partnership and assignment for the course every fallsemester. Additionally every spring semester, students who have completed the Measurementand Assessment course can volunteer to give the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) in the springsemester.Courses CreatedSummer 2009: CNSL-A851: School CounselingDeveloped the course and syllabus for a new elective in School Counseling. As part of therequirements for individuals to be eligible to receive an Ancillary Certification for SchoolCounseling in the state of Louisiana, students must take a School Counseling course andcomplete a Practicum or Internship in a school. Not only is this a course that current studentswho want to work with children or in a school are drawn to, but several graduates of our programand other counseling programs have returned to take the course in order to qualify for thecertification.12
