With your tremendous help, and the great support of so many others,Wellspring Calgary launched and has flourished, becoming an important resource for ourfamily members, friends, and neighbours impacted by cancer.Since our beginning in 2007, Wellspring Calgary has witnessed exponential growth in ourmembership numbers and participation. We have been blessed to create and strengthenpartnerships that have had a profound and positive impact on those we serve. Mostsignificantly, we have heard time and time again from those we have the privilege ofserving, that Wellspring Calgary has had a tremendous impact in their lives helpingthem to pick up the pieces following a cancer diagnosis and to feel empowered andhopeful as they navigate their way.As you will see and read, the impact of your supportis profound and will continueto be important.“Wellspring Calgaryenabled me to move onfrom being a cancer patientto someone experiencing great joyand appreciationfor my current well-being.”2014 was a pivotal year forWellspring Calgary. We were motivated to consider this plan knowing the impact of our work together, and knowing the significant need that still exists for southern Albertans unable to accessour current programs. We look forward to sharing this plan with you in the coming year. Please let me extend my gratitude to you for the truly vital role you play. Thanks to you, noone has to face cancer alone. Thanks to you, people can navigate the challenging journeyof cancer feeling empowered with information, resources, and the support of others who“get” it. “I’ve taken many Wellspring classes that have led toamazing self-discovery I am profoundly changed.”In 2014, thanks to the extraordinary generosity and creativityof Cedarglen Homes, and with support from its trades, suppliers and Brookfield Residential, new doors toIn 2013, the Alberta CancerFoundation and Wellspring Calgarybegan discussing ways to bringcancer supportive care to more peoplethroughout rural Alberta.resources literally opened up in south Calgary for people livingwith cancer. On February 13, a beautiful showhome in Auburn Bay became“Wellspring Calgary South,” the temporary site of scheduledprograms three days a week through May. During off-programtimes, it remained a showhome for prospective buyers. And to make this gift even moreremarkable, the home was auctionedoff in June with Cedarglen Homesdonating full proceeds of 525,000as a multi-year gift to WellspringCalgary.Using the funds, in part, to develop a planto address more permanent growth in otherparts of the city over time, Wellspring is fulfillingits vision that no one has to face cancer alone. This unprecedented donation, combined with supportfrom the Alberta Cancer Foundation, has made it possible forWellspring to reach out and deliver a select offering of programsin south Calgary and to fortify cancer supportive care in ruralAlberta.“This was a very personal decision for us,” says CedarglenHomes President Howard Tse, explaining how cancer touchedclose to home when one of the company’s key tradespeople wasdiagnosed with cancer, and who received invaluable support fromWellspring Calgary. “We know how important the organizationis, and also that cancer is indiscriminate,” Tse notes. “Everyoneknows someone who has been impacted by it — so this reallystruck a chord for us.”Members benefitedfromprogram hoursdelivered through theAuburn Bay home493Barb Schultz, a Wellspring Calgary member whoresides in the far south end of Calgary, echoesthis sentiment. “I was enjoying retirementand travel with my husband in 2012when an abnormal mammogramand subsequent biopsy led to adiagnosis of breast cancer onValentine’s Day.”As Barb browsed through aWellspring Calgary brochure atthe Tom Baker Cancer Centre, she saw programs such as Tai Chiand Expressive Arts that were on her‘someday’ list of things to do, and there shesays she began her journey to wellness.“I found a warm, welcoming atmosphere of joy, friendship, and laughter at Wellspring,” saysBarb, adding, “I’ve taken many Wellspring classesthat have led to amazing self-discovery I amprofoundly changed.”Barb is especially grateful to have been able toaccess classes such as Brain Fog, iRest YogaNidra and Creative Journaling at the varioussouth Wellspring Calgary locations offered byhomebuilders Cedarglen, Cardel and Albi. “I wasable to conserve energy during difficult treatmentsand save hours of travel time,” she says.“Wellspring has helped heal my mind, body andspirit. I have made new friendships with deepconnections, shared laughter and gained valuableinsights.”Thanks to their generous funding in2014, Wellspring has been ableto maximize capacity atCarma House, expandprograms, develop newprograms to respondto member demand, pilot programs insouth Calgary, identifycritical elements thatwill be necessarycomponents of growth, seek the feedback of keystakeholders to inform longrange plans, and much more.At this juncture, better prepared forgrowth and with a stronger sense ofstrategic direction to guide next steps,Wellspring looks forward to how theAlberta Cancer Foundation will continueto play a vital role with us in supportingour community more fully.Members benefitedfromprogram hoursoffered in the south795For Lillian Bouclin, mother of three young adults and a social workeremployed in the non-profit sector, “Wellspring Calgary has been a Godsend.”When news that she had breast cancer took her down a new a path, she first spent time proving to herself and her kids that she wasokay, and then she chose to fortify her journey with WellspringCalgary programs.“It’s incredible to think that in my 60s I’m learning thingslike mindfulness, meditation and even just how to reallybreathe,” says Lillian underscoring her favourite Wellspringyoga class, where the facilitator has impressed upon herthe importance of honouring your body.On the ski trip to Lake Louise, Lillian took to heart thephilosophy that people are more than their cancer when thefacilitator encouraged participants to talk with each other aboutthree or four non-cancer things they had in common. “It was greatthat we could just get out there and be skiers!”In the Mindful Mountain Hiking program, she says she findsnature soothing and she marvels at the patience of the facilitators and the warmth and camaraderie of the hiking group. “Icall it ‘no-jock’ mountain hiking and ‘no-jock’ yoga, because atWellspring there is absolutely no competition, no judgement, no comparison of abilities; people just accept youexactly as you are, where you are.”Perhaps the greatest homage Lillian pays to Wellspring iswhen she pauses and sums it up as her refuge. “I don’t havefamily in Calgary, my daughters are all scattered throughout Canadaand the United States. But Wellspring Calgary is my sanctuary – it givesme constant unwavering support.”At Wellspring people just accept youexactly as you are, where you are.”9

Cancervive was the brainchild of cancer survivor and one of theearly Wellspring Calgary board members, Brian McGregor, whowanted to support those living with a cancer diagnosis. In 2005 heled a group of cyclists from Calgary to Austin, Texas. Since then,Cancervive has grown and been rerouted to various destinations, and now includes cancer survivors, warriors, riders, challenge riders, volunteers, sponsors, supporters, and you, people who together haveraised over 2 million in support of Wellspring programs for anyone livingwith cancer and their loved ones.Since 2009, World Health (Edgemont club) has been supporting WellspringCalgary through its annual golf tournament. It has evolved this connection bybecoming involved in our events and directing its annual fundraising throughout theyear to Wellspring. As Wellspring gratefully accepts the support of this generousorganization, we are mindful of the compatibility of our missions: World Health aimsto enrich people’s lives by inspiring health and fitness, while Wellspring’s mission is toimprove the quality of life for those living with cancer. Wellspring is fortunateto have such a great community partner supporting us so faithfully yearafter year.In 2014, this group rode from Edmonton to Calgary through rural Alberta. This four-day,400 kilometer trip raised nearly 120,000 thanks to the dedicated riders and volunteerswho made their journey a benefit to those facing their own cancer challenges.Moira Lemke was at the finish line of this year’s ride to welcome thegroup, including her 24-year-old son Rory who had signed up to do theride in tribute to his mom.“I was so touched that he did that for me,” said the mother of three, who was still undergoing treatment for breast cancer at the time ofthe Cancervive ride. “It wasn’t easy but he did it. Wearing bright greenrunners and riding a borrowed bike, he made it and I was proud!”After her cancer diagnosis early in 2014, Moira found that many roadsled her to Wellspring Calgary. “I’ve been a career consultant at theHaskayne School of Business for many years and my friend andco-worker Rita Egizii is one of the three co-founders of WellspringCalgary,” says Moira, adding that both the Tom Baker Cancer Centre andthe Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation also provided referrals toWellspring.I wish therewas a Wellspringfor everyone, cancer or nocancer! It hassuch a positiveinfluence onyour life.”Moira participated in a variety of Wellspring programs and experienceddeep personal fulfillment and astonishing revelations in the yoga and artclasses. In yoga she learned to celebrate her body rather than curse itfor being weary and unwell. In watercolour she found deeper meaningin being guided to just let the paint form its own picture. “To me thatspeaks of life. Let it unfold, don’t try to control everything,” she said. But most of all, at Wellspring she just felt at home.“You get to go there and feel normal. It doesn’t matter if you have hairor you don’t have hair, or whether you can execute a yoga pose or you’rejust giving it your best shot. If you just need to put your head down andstop that’s okay. There’s no judgement. You’re accepted.”Moira shares her realization that cancer doesn’t define you and saysyou can live your best possible life with cancer and beyond. “I wishthere was a Wellspring for everyone, cancer or no cancer! It has such apositive influence on your life.”Thomas is one suchmember who enjoysparticipating in programs with a focus on fitness and health. In 2014, World Health participated in Wellspring’s two signatureevents. At triWELLathon, instructors from World Health ranfitness sessions for our members. For our annual Toupee fora Day event, World Health staff enthusiastically donned thecolourful Toupees to show their support and raise funds andawareness for people living with cancer. World Health is one ofour outstanding community partners bringing health and wellnessto the community and our members.“I was a relatively healthy 22-year-old university student, when a series of doctors’ appointmentsrevealed that I had a rare type of leukemia,” says Thomas. “The diagnosis forced me to take a year offschool and focus on the things that are most important to me: my health and family.”While receiving treatment, Thomas relied heavily on his family for support but struggled to findother young adults who could relate to the challenges and suffering he was experiencing.Eventually he discovered a support group for young adult (YA) survivors, and through that hemade the connections that led him to Wellspring Calgary.“Since joining the Wellspring family, I have participated in cooking classes, fitness and yogaprograms, outdoor adventures like skiing and hiking, and a variety of social events,” saysThomas. “Each of these programs has had a positive impact, motivating me to changemy life for the better via diet, exercise, and recreational activities.”As he highlights the joys of hiking and skiing, the calming effects of yoga, andthe rejuvenation of exercise, Thomas notes his enjoyment of Wellspring Calgaryprograms that are specifically designed just for young adults who have beendiagnosed with cancer. “I find it easiest to relate to people my own age and theseprograms have helped me to connect with a great group of young adults who haveundergone life experiences similar to my own,” he says.Overall, Thomas says Wellspring Calgary has done wonders for his physical and psychologicalhealth. “And for all of this, I am extremely grateful!”Each of these programs has had a positive impact, motivating me to change my life for the better viadiet, exercise, and recreational activities.”11
