Commencement InformationTo Our GuestsCommencement, the solemn but joyful climax andrecognition of the graduates’ years of study, is animportant occasion to the University, its faculty, staff, and students. All guests and participants arerequested to avoid unnecessary conversation ormoving about during the exercises.Only authorized press and Universityphotographers are permitted on the floor to takepictures once the exercises are in progress. When the processional party enters at thebeginning of the ceremony, the audience rises. They remain standing until all members ofthe platform party have taken their places onthe platform and during the singing of theNational Anthem.Following the singing of the Alma Mater, there isa recessional. The audience is requested to remainseated during this period. We welcome you to the commencement exercisesfor baccalaureate degree candidates.Academic ProcessionThe Mace, which symbolizes the President’sauthority, is carried at the head of the academicprocession by a University Marshal. It wascarved from a newel post saved from the originalOld Main (which was rebuilt in 1929).Academic DressAcademic dress had its beginning in the MiddleAges. When the English universities were takingform in the twelfth and thirteenth centuries, thescholars were also clerics and adopted robessimilar to those of their monastic orders. Capswere a necessity in the drafty buildings, andcapes with hoods attached were needed forwarmth. The hood was selected by these earlyscholars as the article to be made distinctive forthe various degrees by its color, trimming, andbinding. As the universities gradually passed fromthe control of these ecclesiastics, costumes took onbrighter hues. The use of academic costume in the United Stateshas been continuous since the colonial times.A uniform system was not widespread, however, until about 1895 when the well-defined code ofthe Intercollegiate Commission was adopted bynearly all institutions of higher learning.Gowns worn by those in the procession varyaccording to the degree held. Although the gownis more frequently black for academic degrees, certain universities have authorized the use ofcolored gowns. The academic gown has short orregular sleeves for the bachelor’s degree, pointedsleeves for the master’s degree, and round fullsleeves for the doctor’s degree. There are notrimmings on the bachelor’s or master’s gowns, but the doctor’s gown is faced in the front withblack velvet and has three bars of the samematerial across the sleeves. In some cases, thecolor of this velvet relates to the field in which thedegree is granted.Hoods are not usually worn by recipients of thebachelor’s degree. The hood, the most distinctivefeature of the American code, varies in lengthaccording to the type of degree held and islined with the official colors of the institutionconferring the degree. The velvet border oredging of the hood indicates the character ofthe degree it represents: blue – philosophy; lightblue – education; brown – fine arts; blue violet –architecture; copper – economics; drab – businessadministration; golden yellow – science; green –medicine; sage green – physical education; orange– engineering; pink – music; russet – forestry; white– arts, letters, and humanities. The cap is usually square and is the same for alldegrees. The standard tassel is black, but thedoctor’s cap may have a gold tassel. The standardcap is the mortarboard, usually the color of thegown. Undergraduates wear the tassel on the rightside of the cap until the moment the degree isconferred, and then it is transferred to the left side.
