Athletics“Bearcat Stadium is a first-class facility, and it’s the most visible result of The Campaign forNorthwest. Because of the football stadium’s scoreboard, suites and many otherfan-friendly features, the athletics department is able to generate a game-dayenvironment that didn’t previously exist.”Dr. Bob Boerigter, Director of Athleticsment officer. “Shortly before the start of thecampaign, the Degree Completion Programwas identified as a crucial need at Northwest. Over the course of the campaign, themessage of this need really spread, and thosewho truly care about an initiative like thishave taken to it with extreme sincerity. Afterall, this is why these kids come to Northwest– to compete athleticallyand ultimately receive theirdegree.”Northwest’s athleticsteams have fared well sincethe start of the capitalcampaign. On the teamlevel, Northwest has hadtwo national footballchampionship gameappearances, two EliteEight men’s basketballappearances, men’sand women’s tennisSweet Sixteen appearances and softball NCAA postseason play.Northwest also has had individual nationalchampions in men’s and women’s track andfield as well as MIAA top Scholar Athleteaward winners.Dr. Bob Boerigter, director of athletics, isquick to point out that campaign funds forathletics have directly benefited Northweststudents and the department’s goals haveremained intact.“The facilities and equipment are usedon a daily basis by our students,” he said.“The top goals of the athletics departmentare to graduate all student-athletes, makesure everybody has a positive experiencehere, make sure that positive experience isreflected on the field and finally anyone whohas involvement, either at a distance or upclose, is proud of our program.” 6.6 million out of 43.5 milliondesignated to athletics 7 6 5MILLIONSIn recent years, Northwest MissouriState University athletics have takenon a new identity. The Bearcats havecreated a renewed sense of pride foreveryone involved. The winning teams, headline events and record crowds giveNorthwest alumni and supporters good reason to stay involved and let their true color– Bearcat green – show. The 6.6 million given by Northwestalumni and friends for the athletics component of The Campaign for Northwest is aprime example of the dedication of Bearcatfans. Because the state prohibits taxpayerdollars from going toward athletic facilities, the University must rely on the support ofalumni and friends to fund facilities suchas Bearcat Stadium. With 16 men’s andwomen’s varsity athletic teams and morethan 20 intramural athletic options, the needfor facility funding is ever-present.According to Mel Tjeerdsma, head football coach, facilities play an important rolein recruiting – competitive facilities as wellas practice, training and medical facilities.“The campaign has allowed for topnotch facilities that give us a tremendousedge in recruiting,” Tjeerdsma said. “If wewanted to stay at the top, this was something we had to do. We now have first-classfacilities to go with our first-class program.”In addition to the new 5.5 millionfootball stadium, campaign contributionsassisted with funding for renovated weightand locker rooms, the Degree CompletionScholarship Program as well as operationalfunds for many sports.“The Degree Completion ScholarshipProgram financially assists student-athleteswith completing their degrees once theyhave exhausted their athletic eligibility,” saidMark Stewart ’03, ’06, athletics develop- 4 3 2 1 0Athletics GoalSPRING 2007Athletics GiftsT H E C A M PA I G N F O R N O R T H W E S T: F I N A L R E P O R T21

Seven grants were awarded, and included such projects ascentennial banners, which were hung on utility poles throughoutMaryville and campus; the production of a video used in Freshman Seminar titled “Northwest: 1905-2005;” several display casesthat were placed throughout campus used to showcase Northwest’s history; the production of a catalog of items donated to theUniversity by art department alumni for an elaborate art exhibit;a display case and signage for an agriculture museum in the ValkAgriculture Professions Center; a CD/DVD documenting theMissouri Academy of Science, Mathematics and Computing’sfirst five years; and benches for the Centennial Garden.CentennialSociety giftssupported thecreation ofa centennialsculpture. The bronze,life-sized artwork locatedjust outsidethe J.W.
