Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewSpectrum AnalysisLaboratory-qualitymea sure ments in the fieldObtain all of the performance of yourbench-top analyzer in a portableinstrument.Ease-of-usePortability, versatility, and per for mance are valued attributes, but tobe really valuable an instrument mustalso be easy to use. The 35670Ahas a friendly front panel, plusonline help that’s always available toanswer your questions. An interactivemea sure ment state lets you configurethe instrument setup from a singledisplay.FFT-based spectrum analyzers, suchas the 35670A, are ideal formeasuring the spectra of low-fre quen cy signals like speech orme chan i cal vibration. Transientcom po nents, usually missed withswept-frequency analyzers, are easilymeasured and displayed at speedsfast enough to follow trends. The35670A has both the per for manceand features required to take fullad van tage of this tech nol o gy.16-bits for high per for manceWith a 16-bit ADC (90 dB typicaldynamic range) and a real-timebandwidth of 25.6 kHz, you can besure nothing will be missed. Resolvesignals using 100 to 1600 linesres o lu tion, or for really close-inanalysis, use frequency zoom toresolve signals with up to 61 µHzresolution. Use time or RPM armingto develop waterfalls of sequentialvibration spectra for trend analysis orfor an overview of device vibration.Power and linear spectrumsMatch your spectrum measurementmode to the signal being tested.Use linear spectrum analysis tomeasure both the amplitude andphase of periodic signals such as thespectra of rotating machinery. Powerspectrum analysis is provided foraveraging nonrepetitive signals. Two spectrums ofroad induced vibrationmeasured at differentspeeds are com paredusing the front/backmode of the Keysight35670A.AveragingVarious averaging modes let youfurther refine spectrum analysis measurements. Time averaging extractsrepetitive signals out of the noisewhile rms averaging reduces thenoise to its mean value. Ex po nen tialaveraging, available for both time andrms averaging, is useful for reducingthe noise while following changingsignals—tracking the resonance shiftsin a fatiguing structure for example.

Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewTime domainSpecial markersUse your spectrum analyzer as alow-frequency os cil lo scope or viewsignals in the time and frequencydomains simultaneously.(Note: anti-alias filters can beswitched off.) Special markers fortime-domain data facilitate extractionof key control system performanceparameters: overshoot, rise time, setting time, and delay time.Three special marker functionsfacilitate analysis of your spectraldata. Sideband markers aid analysisof modulation signals. Use thisfunction to quickly locate side bandsin the complicated spectra of rotatingData tablemachines. A band-power markerreads the total power in a selectedband of frequencies and a totalharmonic dis tor tion marker lets youcalculate total harmonic distortionwithout including the effects of noise.Simultaneous displayof fre quen c y and timedomain data facilitatesanalysis of gear meshvibration.Use a tabular format to keep trackof key frequencies in the spectra ofrotating machinery. The amplitudeand frequency of the signal and a16-character entry label field arelisted for each selected point.Automatic units conversionDisplay vibration data in the unitsof your choice. Select g, m/sec2,in/sec2, m/s, in/s, m, mil, inch, Kg,lb, N, dyn, or pascals as ap pro pri atefor your application. The in s tru mentau to mat i cal ly converts fre quen cy-domain data from specifiedinput trans duc er units to the unitsyou select for display. For example,ac cel er om e ter data is automaticallycon vert ed and displayed as milswhen mils are selected. Of course,dB, dBV, dBm and volts are availablefor electrical applications.Measurement results atkey fre quen cies can belabeled and listed usingdata table.MarkersMarkers streamline analysis byhelping you select and display specific data. Marker functions includemarker to peak, next right peak, andcoupled markers for selecting pointsin multiple data displays. Markersreadouts are absolute or relative toyour selected reference.Harmonic markers areused to calculate theTHD of a signal withoutincluding the effects ofnoise.

Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewFrequency Response MeasurementsThe 35670A has the flexibilityto make measurements of bothelectrical networks and me chan i caldevices. FFT-based network analysisis fast enough to allow real-timead just ments of circuit pa ram e terswhile the swept-sine option providesexacting mea sure ments over morethan six fre quen cy decades, and a130 dB dynamic range.SourceSelect the optimum stimulus for eachap pli ca tion—random noise, periodicchirp, pink noise, fixed sine, burstrandom, and burst chirp. For zoomednetwork analysis measurements, thesource is band-translated to matchthe zoom span at frequencies upto 51.2 kHz. An optional arbitrarysource lets you test your productusing real-world signals. A 10 VoltDC source offset facilitates tests ofcontrol systems.Four channels (Option AY6)MarkersTest up to three devices si mul taneous ly with a four-channel35670A. Channel one is the commonreference channel and two, three, and four are the response channels.Alternatively, select channels oneand three as reference channels fortwo totally independent networkmea sure ments. See Option AY6de scrip tion for more in for ma tion.A frequency and damping markerprovides the resonant frequencyand the damping ratio of single-degree-of-freedom frequency responsemea sure ments.Gain and phase margin markersextract key frequency-domain stability data from frequency responsemea sure ments of control systems.Limits are usedfor go/no go testingin production. Theresponse of anaccelerometer isbeing checked inthis example.Impact testingForce and exponential windowsallow impact testing for modal andstruc tur al analysis. Quality mea sure ments are ensured using previewand accept/reject during averaging.A 4 mA constant current transducerpower supply is built-in for trueport a bil i t y.LimitsTest network measurements againstpreset limits. Up to 800 separate linesegments are available for settingupper and lower limits. Limits arealso used for testing spectrummea sure ments.Characteristics of aselected resonanceare automaticallycalculated from animpact mea sure mentusing the fre quen c yand damping marker.

Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewTime CaptureCapture transient events or timehistories for complete analysis in anymea sure ment mode (except sweptsine). Use either the entire time-capture record or a selected region ofinterest for re pet i tive analysis in theFFT, octave, order track, cor re la tionor histogram instrument modes.Standard 16 Mbytes of memory fordeep time-capture capability. An interval oftime-capture datahas been selected foranalysis in the octavemode.

Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewUsing Measurement ResultsComputed OrderTracking (Option 1D0)Taking the measurement is only halfthe job. Raw measurement data mustbe stored, recalled, printed, plotted, integrated with other data for analysis, and reported. The 35670A helps youfinish the job.– S elf-contained—no ratiosynthesizer or tracking filterrequired– Order maps– Order tracking– RPM or timetrigger– Display RPM profile– Track up to five orders/channel– Up to 200 orders– Composite power– RPM measurementsDocumented resultsThe 35670A supports GPIB, serialand parallel printers and plotters fordirect hardcopy output. The printersand plotters that can be connecteddirectly to the 35670A are limitedto older HP-GL printers with PCL 5capability (HP LaserJet 4000 series isone such printer). The internal 3.5 inch flexible diskdrive stores data (Standard DataFormat – SDF or ASCII), instrumentstates, HP-GL plots and Keysight In stru ment BASIC programs in HP-LIFor MS-DOS formats for future recallor use on a personal computer.Entire display screens can be im port eddirectly into your word processingprogram by plotting HP-GL files toyour named DOS file. HP-GL filesare interpreted and dis played directlyby Microsoft’s Word for Windows. For general digital signal processingand filtering, data files may be storedas ASCII, and then imported to anExcel spreadsheet via the floppydrive, DataLink, or GPIB.For specific applications, useapplication software that reads SDFfiles directly, such as STARModaland STARAcoustics from SpectralDynamics and MEScope fromVibrant. The slice markerfeature is used toselect and displayan order or suborderfrom an order map.Order tracking facilitates evaluationof spectra from rotating machines bydisplaying vibration data as a functionof orders (or harmonics) rather thanfrequency. All measurement spectrais normalized to the shaft RPM.Now you can have order trackingwithout compromising portability.Traditional analog order trackingtechniques require external trackingfilters and ratio synthesizers. WithKeysight’s computed order trackingal go rithm, external hardware is gone.Because order tracking is im ple ment ed in the software, data ismore precise and your job is easier.Com pared to traditional analog ordertracking techniques, computed ordertracking offers:– I mproved dynamic range at highorders– More accurate tracking of rapidlychanging shaft speeds– Accurate RPM labeled spectra withexact RPM trigger arm– Wide 64:1 ratio of start to stopRPMs

Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewOrder mapUse order maps for an overview ofvibration data versus RPM or time.Display the amplitude profile ofindividual orders and suborders usingthe slice marker function.Al ter na tive ly, use trace markers toselect individual traces for display.Oscilloscope-qualityorbit diagrams meanyou carry only oneinstrument onto theshop floor.Order trackingMeasure only the data you need.Order tracking lets you measure theam pli tude profile of up to five ordersplus composite power si mul ta neous lyon each channel. Up to four ordersor three orders and composite powercan be displayed simultaneously.RPM profileOrder tracking is used tosi mul t a neous ly displayup to four orders or acombination of orders, composite power andRPM profile.Use RPM profile to monitor thevari a tion of RPM with time duringorder tracking mea sure ments.Composite powerComposite power provides the totalsignal power in a selected channel asa function of RPM.Run-up and run-downmea sure mentsRun-up and run-down mea sure mentsof any order are made using externaltrigger as the phase reference.Display the results as bode or polarplots; both are available. Markersallow con ve nient notation of im por tant shaft speeds.OrbitsObtain oscilloscope-quality orbitmeasurements with your 35670A.Unlike traditional FFT analyzers, the35670A equipped with computedorder tracking displays a selectednumber of loops (usually one) as theshaft RPM is varied.Markers are used toannotate shaft speedsat selected points in arun-up measurement.

Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewReal-Time Octave Measurements (Option 1D1)Microphone Adapter and Power Supply (Option UK4)Real-time third octave to 40kHzANSI S1.11-1986 filtershapesA-weighted overall SPLRPM or time-triggeredwaterfallsElim i nate the expense and in con ve nience of multiple instruments in thefield. With optional real-time octaveanalysis, and the optional mi cro phoneadapter and power supply, you havea complete real-time octave analyzeradded to your 35670A at a fractionof the cost of a second instrument. Now you can carry both your FFT andreal-time octave analyzers to the jobsite in the same hand.ANSI S1.11-1986All octave filters comply with filtershape standards ANSI S1.11-1986(Order 3, type 1-D), DIN 45651, andIEC 225-1966. An 80 dB dynamicrange for the audio spectrumpro vides the performance requiredby ac ous ti cians. Switchable analogA-weighting filters in the inputchannels comply fully with both ANSIS1.4-1983 and IEC 651-1979 Type 0.Advanced analysisUse waterfall displays of octave datafor an overview of device noise versustime or RPM. Display in di vid u alfre quen cy bands as a function ofRPM or time using the slice markerfunction. Al ter na tive ly, use tracemarkers to select individual tracesfor display.A pink noise source is available fortesting electro-acoustic devices.Sound level metermea surementsPeak hold, impulse, fast, slow, andLeq are all provided with optionalreal-time octave measurements. All measurements conform toIEC 651-1979 Type 0 – Impulse. This waterfall displayof a flyover test can beanalyzed trace-by-traceor by selecting timeslices along the z-axis.Real-time 1/3-octave to 40kHz on one channelWith two input channels of 1/3-octave real-time measurements atfre quen cies up to 20 kHz, you get allof the in for ma tion you’ll ever need tounderstand the noise per for manceof your product. No mis in ter pret edmeasurements because transientcomponents were missed. Whenthe frequency range re quire ment is10 kHz or less, use four channels tochar ac ter ize spatial variations. Forthose exceptional circumstances, use1/3-octave res o lu tion at frequenciesup to 40 kHz on a single channel.Res o lu tions of 1/1- and 1/12-octaveare also available.Overall sound pressure level andA-weighted sound pressure level canbe displayed with the octave bandsindividually, together, or not at all.A fan-off mode lets you use thein s tru ment in the sound field beingmeasured.Real-time 1/3-octavemea sure ments atfrequencies up to40 kHz.Keysight 35670A withOption UK4 mi cro phoneadapter and power supply.

Keysight 35670A Dynamic Signal Analyzer - Technical OverviewSwept-Sine Measurements (Option 1D2)130 dB dynamic rangeLogarithmic or linear sweeps“Auto” frequency resolutionWhile FFT-based network analysisis fast and accurate, swept-sinemea sure ments are a better choicewhen the device under test has awide dynamic range or covers severaldecades of frequency range. Useswept- sine measurements to extendthe network measurement ca pa bil i ties of the 35670A.Network analysis over a130 dB rangeWith traditional swept-sine, the35670A is optimally configured tomeasure each individual point in thefrequency response. The result is a130 dB dynamic range. With FFTbased network analysis, all fre quen cypoints are stimulated simultaneouslyand the instrument configures itselfto measure the highest amplituderesponse—thereby limiting thedynamic range.Characterize nonlinearnet worksUse the auto-level feature to hold theinput or output amplitude constantduring a sweep. This provides thedevice response for a specific signalamplitude. With FFT-based networkanalysis using random noise, therandom am pli tudes of the stimulustend to “average out” the non-linearities and therefore does not capturethe dependency of the response onthe stimulus amplitude.Logarithmic sweepTest devices over more than sixdecades of frequency range usinglogarithmic sweep. In this mode, thefrequency is automatically adjustedto provide the same resolution overeach decade of frequency range. With FFT-network analysis, resolution is constant—not a problem whenmeasuring over narrow frequencyranges.FlexibleMake the measurement your way.Independently select logarithmicor linear sweep, sweep up or down, automatic or manual sweep, andautoresolution.Test multiple devicessimultaneouslyIncrease throughput in production.Swept-sine measurements up to25.6 kHz can be made on threedevices simultaneously using sweptsine on a four-channel 35670A.Channel one is the common referencechannel for these measurements.Alternatively, channels one andthree can be designated as in de pen dent reference channels for twototally independent swept-sinemea sure ments.Automatic frequencyresolutionUse autoresolution to obtain thefastest sweep possible withoutsacrificing accuracy. With autoresolution, the 35670A automaticallyadjusts the frequency step accordingto the device re sponse. High ratesof amplitude and phase changeare matched with small frequencysteps. Low rate-of -change regionsare quickly measured with largerfrequency steps. The stability of acontrol loop is quicklychar ac ter ized using thegain and phase marginmarker function.
