In the giant wind tunnel at the BMW Group’sAerodynamic Test Center in Munich, drivingreality is turned inside out: it’s the vehiclethat stays still while its environment movesaround it. A huge rotor that consumes fl .flmegawatts of power drives fi , cubicyards of air around an air ow ring. Beforereaching the test track, the air is forcedthrough a duct to accelerate its speed sixtimes. Road conditions are simulated using ve thin steel rolling tracks. The wheels ofthe test vehicle – in this case, the BMW fi i Convertible – are driven by four narrowbelts, while the long central belt under thecar moves at exactly the same speed. Thiscomplex arrangement ensures that the air owat the car’s undercarriage, wheels and wheelarches is almost identical to that of a realdriving situation. It’s as if the very road itselfwere being put to the test.When it comes to aerodynamics, a percentreduction in air resistance leads to a goodfi . percent reduction in fuel consumption.Although the new fi i Convertible body isalready aerodynamically optimized, this isactually responsible for only fl percent ofthe vehicle’s total air resistance. Ten percentis caused by the cooling air for the engine,transmission and brakes; fi percent from thevehicle underbody; and the nal percent isproduced at the wheels and the wheel arches.In all these areas, the new Series Convertiblestill had room for improvement.This Aerodynamic Test Center testing hasyielded an innovative solution: the new AirCurtain in the front air dam, which makesits debut in the fi i. This dynamic featureprotects the front wheels from headwindand signi cantly reduces turbulence overthe front tires. Air is taken in through ventsin the front air dam. As the vent ducts narrow,the air picks up speed. It exits at high speedthrough narrow slits, covering the outer faceof the front wheels like a curtain.
