Students have one school day for every day ofabsence to complete their make-up work.HomeworkHomework is essential to success at Hanes Magnet School.Doing homework will help students develop many valuableskills such as good study habits, time management,responsibility, and perseverance. Teachers will assignhomework that will foster individual learning and growththat is appropriate for the subject area. It is the student’sresponsibility to complete and turn in homework on time. When it is necessaryfor students to miss school, parents should send a note tothe homeroom teacher with the following information:--Date of excuse--Reason for absence--Date of absence--Signature of the parent/guardianThe following reasons constitute a valid excuse for anabsence:--Illness or injury--Quarantine--Death in the immediate family--Medical or dental appointments--Court or administrative proceedings--Religious observancesAn absence will be coded unexcused if a note is notreceived within three (3) days of the absence. Excessiveunexcused absences will be reported to the social workerand the district attorney. If a student misses ten (10) ormore days, the student is not eligible to participate in afterschool activities, except tutoring or after-school detention.Students with 10 unexcused absences may be required tobring a doctor's note when absent from school.Students must be at school by 11:15 to be counted presentfor the day. If they are signing out and not returning theymust sign out after 11:15 to be counted present for a fullday. If a parent needs to sign a student out of school earlythey will need to do so prior to 2:15. After 2:15 we will nolonger call classrooms to sign students out. Signing outduring this time becomes confusing and a safety issue dueto dismissal.2013-14Parents who wish to take their children out of school for aneducational trip must seek the approval of the principal.TardiesStudents are expected to be in homeroom by 7:55 a.m.Students on late arriving buses will not be marked tardy.Students arriving after 7:55 a.m. should report to the mainoffice to receive a tardy slip. A written excuse from theparent/guardian must accompany the student upon arrival,or the parent/guardian should sign the student into themain office. Valid reasons for excused tardies/absences are:medical appointments, illness, death in the family, legalobligations and other appointments with professionalsbeyond the control of the family.Students who are late to class will face the followingconsequences. Ten unexcused tardies equals one absence.1st tardy - warning2nd tardy - parent contact3rd tardy - team detention & parent notification4th tardy - office referralSchool Dress CodeHanes Magnet School will continue to have a StandardMode of Dress for all students and staff. Students areexpected to be in Standard Mode of Dress from the timethey enter the building in the morning through the timethey exit the building in the afternoon (students in PEshould change back into SMOD before going home).A dress code check will be performed daily after themorning announcements. Students who change out ofdress code for class presentations will remain in theirclassroom or on their hallway. They should change backinto SMOD following the presentation activity.On game days, athletic team members will be allowed towear their uniform/team top only. Coaches will provideteam members with further details for each sport. Spiritdays, on which students may wear spirit t-shirts, or nonSMOD days may be designated by the Principal.The school's Standard Mode of Dress is as follows:Trousers/Shorts/Skirts/Jumpers Colors are khaki (tan/beige) or black. Garments should be worn above the hipbone (nosagging pants). Skirts, shorts or jumpers must be worn at kneelength or longer. Capri pants are also appropriate. Dresses should be black or khaki and should be kneelength or longer.

HANES MAGNET SCHOOLShirts Three types of collared shirts are allowed in long orshort sleeves: Knit (Golf/Polo type) shirts, oxfordshirts (must be buttoned), broadcloth shirts. Colors are white, black, khaki (tan/beige), purple andyellow/gold). Shirts must be plain. Small logos only are allowed on shirts. Large logosare not allowed. Any shade of purple and any shade of yellow areacceptable.Other Garments Outer garments worn in the building should meetSMOD requirements (outlined below). Non-SMODitems may not be draped, tied around the waist,carried, or worn inside-out during the school day.Non-SMOD garments will be confiscated as studentsenter the building and will need to be retrieved byparents. Outer garments worn in the building during theschool day (such as vests, sweaters, light jackets, orsweatshirts) must be a solid color of white, black,purple, yellow/gold, or khaki (tan/beige). This doesnot pertain to heavy coats worn to school during coldweather. Small logos are allowed, but large logos that extendacross the garment are not allowed for outergarments. The only exception to this is Haneshoodies. These may have larger Hanes logos as longas they are in the appropriate colors. Heavy coats of any color, weight or style may beworn to school, but they must be stored during theschool day. Layered garments visible underneath shirts (such att-shirts, turtlenecks, or camis) or shorts/skirts (tightsor leggings) must be of a solid color of white, black,khaki (tan/beige), purple, or yellow/gold. Tights andleggings are not considered pants and must have askirt or pants over them that meet dress code. Theseitems may only be worn underneath a collared shirtor shorts/skirt.Other Considerations Oversized, undersized and skin tight garments arenot allowed. Students should not wear, carry or display bandanas. Sheer garments, if worn, should be worn over aSMOD approved garment. Hats and head coverings are not to be worn in thebuilding (except for religious purposes). This includesstudents wearing hats on a belt loop. Hats should betaken off upon entering the building and stored in2013-14lockers. Hats that are worn will be confiscated, andparents will be required to pick them up.Consequences for Dress Code ViolationsHomeroom teachers will conduct a dress code check eachmorning.st 1 offense: students will have the option of changinginto SMOD or calling home for a change of clothes.Students who borrow SMOD items will relinquishtheir clothing items in exchange for the SMOD items.Students’ clothes will be returned when they returnthe borrowed items. Students out of dress code will be held out of classuntil they are in dress code.nd 2 offense: Students will be assigned either afterschool or Saturday detention. Subsequent offenses may result in ISS, OSS oranother disciplinary consequence. Confiscated items should be picked up by parentswithin 2 weeks. Items that are not picked up withinthat time will be donated. Staff members and the school are not liable forconfiscated items that are lost, stolen or not pickedup.Student Activities and After School ClubsHanes Magnet school offers a range of activities that willenrich student development during or after school.Field TripsField trips are an integral part of the instructional program.When students are on field trips, they are representativesof Hanes Magnet School. It is imperative that students haveexcellent behavior on trips and represent our school well.Students who have repeated documented instances ofinappropriate behavior and disregard for school rules, maybe denied the opportunity to participate on field trips.Student fees must be paid prior to field trip participation.Students will wear standard mode of dress for all field trips.After School Activity ProceduresStudents may remain after school for clubs, athleticactivities, tutorials, or detention. Students may lose theirprivilege to stay after school if the following procedures arenot followed: Remain in the gym until the sponsor of the activitypicks up studentsLeave the building by 4:00 p.m. (later for certainactivities).

HANES MAGNET SCHOOL Follow all school rules for appropriate behavior.Students who do not behave for after-schoolactivities will be asked to leave the activity and notreturn.We cannot provide supervision or be responsible forstudents who remain on campus after 2:50 p.m. and are notinvolved in school activities. Any student staying for anafter school event must make prior arrangements fortransportation home. Students will be taken to thecafeteria once their event is over. Parents should plan tocome in the building and pick students up in thatlocation. Students should be picked up within 10 minutesof the established ending time of their activity. Studentsmay lose their right to participate in after school activities ifthey are picked up late on a consistent basis.Students who come to PTSA meetings or band concertsmust remain seated with their parents if they are notparticipating in the program.Interscholastic AthleticsSeventh and eighth grade students may participate ininterscholastic athletics. Sports offered are: Volleyball Soccer Basketball Track CheerleadingStudents must meet the criteria shown below forparticipation in a sport: Be properly assigned to a school and have missedless than 10 days the previous semester at anyschool, Meet state and local promotion standards andmaintain passing grades in each subject, Not fail a semester of any course, Not become 15years of age on or before October 16th of thatyear, Receive a medical exam conducted by a licensedphysician, Be an amateur, Carry proper insurance.Students cannot participate or attend an intramural,interscholastic, or other after-school activity on a day theyhave been assigned detention, in-school or out -of-schoolsuspension.2013-14Intramural AthleticsAn intramural athletic program will be offered after schoolon Tuesdays and Thursdays. Specific events will be providedfor students from our athletic department. Sixth, seventhand eighth grade students may participate in intramurals.General Policies and ProceduresLost and FoundThere will be a lost and found box in the office. If you findbooks, clothing or personal items on the school grounds,please bring these items to the office. Items not picked upafter 4 weeks will be donated to a charitable organization.Locks and LockersThe lockers at Hanes have been re-painted. In order topreserve the paint, adhesives such as tape or stickersshould not be used on the lockers. Decorations should notbe posted on the outside of lockers. Students caughtdefacing or damaging lockers may lose locker privileges, becharged repair costs, and may be subject to otherdisciplinary action.Students should only use the lock and locker assigned tothem by the teacher. Personal locks are not allowedwithout administrative approval. Students should guardtheir lock combination closely and not share thisinformation with others. Do not preset your lockcombination for easy access or opening. Students willreceive ample time to get books and supplies from theirlockers at designated locker breaks.Students should visit their lockers only during designatedlocker break times. Students should be respectful of classesthat are in session during locker breaks and should behaveappropriately. Students are expected to arrive in class ontime. Not following the procedures may result in lockerprivileges being revoked.Students will be required to sign a locker agreement form inorder to receive their locker assignment. Failure to respectand take care of school property will result in the loss oflocker privileges.Please note that lockers are the school system property.Periodic locker checks will be held throughout the schoolyear. Administrators reserve the right to open and searchany locker at any time, if there is reasonable cause that thelocker might contain items that are inappropriate forschool.

HANES MAGNET SCHOOL2013-14Use of Cell Phones/Other Electronic DevicesArrival to SchoolThe use of cell phones and other electronic devices duringschool is restricted. Cell phones and other electronicdevices should not be used in the hallway or other studentareas from the time students arrive on campus untilstudents are dismissed. The use of cell phones or otherdevices in classrooms is also prohibited unless expresslydirected by the teacher for an academic purpose. Gaming,texting, and other personal uses are prohibited duringschool. Kindles and e-readers may be used in classrooms(with teacher permission) for reading only.Electronic device and cell phone use that falls outside of theappropriate use guidelines will be confiscated and stored inthe main office for parents to pick up. Items not picked upwithin 30 days will be donated to a charitable organization.School begins at 7:55 a.m. Students should not arrive toschool prior to 7:30. At 7:30 only students who eatbreakfast are to go to the cafeteria. All others are to reportdirectly to homeroom. Bus riders will enter through thedoors near the Media Center. All students arriving by carshould unload in the circular drive off Ivy Avenue betweenthe two sets of stairs. Parents should pull as far forward aspossible to expedite the drop off process. At 7:55 the doorson the Ivy Street are locked. Students will then need to betaken to the Indiana Avenue entrance so they may go to thefront office to sign in. Students should not be dropped off atthe Indiana Avenue entrance prior to 7:55.ValuablesStudents should not bring excessive amounts of money orother valuables to school. NEVER leave pocketbooks,jewelry, or other valuables unattended. The schoolassumes NO responsibility for electronic devices. Thisincludes, but is not limited to, cell phones, e-readers, iPods. MP 3 players, CD players and electronic games. Pleaseread "Guidelines for Student Discipline." Bringing some ofthese items to school is a level I offense and will result indisciplinary consequence.VisitorsAll visitors are requested to report to the main office assoon as they arrive on campus. All visitors must receive apass from the office and it must be displayed while in thebuilding. Upon leaving, visitors should return the pass to themain office.Students are not allowed to bring brothers, sisters, friends,or relatives to spend the day or have lunch with them atHanes. Lunch visitors are limited to those peopleauthorized to pick up a child at school. They must sign in atthe front office before going to the cafeteria.Morning ProceduresStudents arriving to school should report directly tohomeroom unless they are eating breakfast. If they areeating breakfast they should take the most direct route tothe cafeteria to quickly eat. After eating they report tohomeroom. Locker breaks will be at the discretion of theteam following homeroom.Dismissal ProceduresStudents will be dismissed with their class daily. Eachteacher will escort their students through the building. ALLcar riders will go to the gym, walkers will go to designatedrooms and bus riders will continue to the bus parking lot.Car riders will continue through the gym to exit the buildingat the Ivy Street circular drive. Once outside they will locatetheir automobile. When all students are in their cars,parents may pull over to the left and continue through thecircular drive. At 2:50 students whose parents have notarrived will be escorted to the cafeteria. Parents will needto go to drive to the front entrance on Indiana Avenue to goin the cafeteria to pick their student up from school. Forsafety, walkers will be seated in designated classrooms untiltraffic has dissipated. Once that has occurred, walkers willbe dismissed to go home.School FeesMedicationsAll medicines will be kept in guidance office. A permissionto dispense medication form must be completed and signedby parent/guardian and physician. This form will be kept onfile in the guidance office for one year. A form will be senthome when medicines need to be replaced. HANES MAGNET SCHOOLor extra-curricular events, including athletics, until fees arepaid. This includes fees for school photos, lost or damagedlibrary books and textbooks. Lost textbooks will not bereplaced until they have been paid for. When library booksare lost students must pay for them before checking outadditional books from the library.Lunch ProgramRegular Student Lunch: 2.60Reduced Student Lunch: 0.40Regular Student Breakfast: 2.00Reduced Student Breakfast: 0.30Free and reduced lunch applications are available from thecafeteria manager. Lunch prices are subject to change afterthe printing of the student handbook.Media CenterThe Hanes Media Center opens at 7:30 a.m. Students mayuse the Media Center after school. During the school daystudents are required to have teacher permission to go tothe Media Center. Reference materials may be checked outovernight. Students will not be allowed to check out anymaterials until overdue materials are returned. Reasonable,courteous behavior and good work habits are expected inthe Media Center at all times.BackpacksStudents should store backpacks, bookbags, and tote bagsin lockers during the school day. They may carry a “stringbag” to electives for their gym clothes.Student BehaviorEach teacher and/or team of teachers will follow aclassroom management plan. Teachers will make phonecalls, conduct parent conferences, assign after-schooldetention, etc. for any violation of classroom and schoolrules. If these attempts are unsuccessful, students will bereferred to the office where an administrator will becomeinvolved in the process.Disciplinary actions at the administrative level could rangefrom parent-student conferences, after-school detentions,in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, or anyaction deemed necessary to ensure a safe, effectivelearning environment. Severe disruptions or misconduct,which present a danger to others, will result in immediatesuspension. Students having ISS or OSS may lose theprivilege to participate in overnight field trips.2013-14On Campus:Students must: Stay in designated areas on-campus. Be courteous and respectful at all times to everyone. Not use profanity, lie, fight, gamble, possessinappropriate literature or material, or be involved inthe abuse/harassment of others. Use electronic devices/cell phones according toschool guidelines. Misuse of electronic devices willresult in the device being confiscated. Remember that any electronic devices (cell phones,iPods, game units) being used without teacherdirection during class time or seen during hallwaytransitions will be confiscated and returned to thestudent’s parents/guardians at the discretion ofadministration. Remember that eating and drinking is not allowed inthe classrooms. Never ride bicycles, use roller blades or skateboardson campus nor bring them to class. Not leave campus without permission during schoolhours. Not use matches, lighters, or any type of explosiveincendiary device on campus. Remain with their classes in designated areas.Students should not wander, run, or loiter in thehalls, lunchroom, restrooms, or on staircases. Remember that they may only eat in the designatedarea. Remember that they may not yell, scream, orotherwise make excessive noise while in the lunchroom, hallways, and restroom. Remember that they must do their part to keepthese areas clean and safe. Remember that they must report any leaks, spills, orother problems in the restroom to a teacher or theoffice. Remember that they may not push, roughhouse orwrestle. Remember to leave their book bag and heavy coatsin their lockers. Only visit lockers during designated locker times. During class time, students are not to be in the halls,stairwells, main office or restroom without a passfrom their teacher or the main office.Assemblies:Students must: Be courteous and quiet during the entire assembly. Be respectful to the presenter/speaker. Follow all dismissal directions. Follow all teacher/staff directions.

HANES MAGNET SCHOOLField Trips:Students must: Be on their best behavior. Pay attention to the directives given by themoderator and trip leader. Dispose of their waste in an appropriate area. Follow all school rules pertaining to behavior. Wear SMOD unless authorized by administration.Hallway Movement & Passes:This year we are expecting approximately 1000 students atHanes. In an effort to maintain the integrity of our classesand preserve instructional time students will be moving in aquiet and orderly manner in the building at all times. Duringclass changes other students will be in class. This makes itnecessary for those moving in the hall to maintain a lowlevel of noise and walk to the right side of the hall. Failureto follow this expectation may result in disciplinary action.Hallways, stairwells, and restrooms are areas used byeveryone at school. Students must have a hall pass if they are outside ofthe classroom during class time. Students are not allowed to visit with friends orinterrupt another classroom. Misuse of the hall pass will result in loss of hall passprivilege. Students should not use the stairs on the Ivy Streetside of the building except in emergency situations orwhen accompanied by a teacher. Only one student per hall pass. Hall passes must be used to enter the media center,main office, or any other location on campus.Emergency Drills:Fire drills, lockdowns, and tornado drills are conducted foreveryone’s protection and are required by law. Duringthese drills it is imperative that students remain silent,follow instructions given by the staff, and carry out alldirections in an orderly fashion.Classroom:Students must Be seated and ready to begin class Be courteous to all teachers and students. Follow all school and classroom rules. Bring all necessary materials/supplies ready to workdaily.2013-14Cafeteria:Students must Enter in an orderly manner and remain quiet. Show courtesy by keeping your place in line and notbreaking in front of others. Remember not to wear heavy coats or jackets in thecafeteria during lunch. Remember that after being served, they should sit atassigned tables and should not leave until your classis dismissed. Clean up after themselves in the cafeteria. See a teacher if any assistance is needed duringlunch. Return all trays, trash, etc. to the designated areawhen your class is dismissed, leaving your area clean. Know their student I.D. to purchase items from thecafeteria. Homeroom teachers will provide these inAugust. Make only one trip to the serving line. No food or drink should leave the cafeteria. Anythingpurchased must be consumed in the cafeteria.Bus Behavior:Students Must Board their bus immediately when they get to thebus lot at dismissal time. Show respect for bus drivers by following stated busrules. Board and exit the bus in a quiet and orderly manner. Remain seated at all times. Talk quietly, only to those students sitting nearby. Keep arms, hands, head, etc. inside the bus at alltimes. No eating or drinking on the bus. Policies apply to riding the activity bus also.BullyingBullying is the repeated act of unkind treatment to anotherstudent. This could be in the form of words or actions. AtHanes we are committed to address issues of bullying thatmay occur. Students found to be in violation of bullyinganother student will be addressed in a disciplinary manner.If a student is bullied it is important that they let a teacheror administrator know immediately.Additional information regarding expectations for studentbehavior, including Guidelines for Student Discipline andthe Student Code of Conduct are also available under theStudent tab on our webpage (www.hanesmagnet.org).

HANES MAGNET SCHOOLStudent Behavior and Code of Student ConductProhibited Behavior. Every student has the right to be free from fear, harm, andviolence at school, on the school bus and at school-related activities. In order topreserve this right, the Board authorizes the Superintendent to create a Code ofStudent Conduct that sets out specific consequences for students violating thefollowing rules:1. Students shall obey Board of Education policies, administrative regulations,school rules, and classroom rules.2. Students shall comply with all lawful directions of Principals, teachers,substitute teachers, teacher assistants, bus drivers, and other school personnelwho are authorized to give such directions.3. Students shall not assault, hit, kick, punch, fight, intentionally harm or threatento harm another person.4. A student shall not incite or instigate a fight, assault or riot. The terms “incite”and “instigate” mean to urge or direct others by words or actions to engage in afight, assault or riot. A student commits this offense by actively urging ordirecting others to take part in the prohibited behavior or by causing orinsti
