ASSOCIATE IN APPLIED SCIENCE – DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY ADMISSION PROCESSLake Michigan College and the Health Sciences Department are pleased that you are interested in theAssociate in Applied Science – Diagnostic Medical Sonography program. The selection process wasestablished to enhance student success in the Sonography curriculum and passing scores on the AmericanRegistry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography national certification exam (ARDMS).In order to be eligible for consideration, ALL applicants MUST:1. Submit a Lake Michigan College application at www.lakemichigancollege.edu/apply.2. Be a high school graduate or successfully complete the GED test.3. Forward ALL official transcripts from colleges previously attended other than LMC to the LakeMichigan College Records Office. It is your responsibility to confirm that your transcripts are onfile with the Records Office. All transcripts MUST be received by the application deadline; studentsare encouraged to send up-to-date transcripts as early as they are available. Please allow 8-10weeks for official transcripts to be evaluated. Failure to have all transcripts submitted on time toLMC may result in an incomplete Sonography application.4. You will obtain clinical experience at local healthcare facilities in addition to formalclassroom instruction. Upon successful completion of the Sonography program, students are eligible totake the ARDMS exam. Satisfactory completion of the ARDMS exam allows the sonographer to use theinitials RDMS, Registered Diagnostic Medical Sonographer.Admission Process and Requirements for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Program1. 2. All applicants’ academic records are evaluated using a numerical point system. Entry into theDiagnostic Medical Sonography program is competitive and based on total points from the gradesearned in prerequisite coursework and previous healthcare experience. If a prerequisite course(see page 2 and page 6) is not completed when the application is submitted, the applicant is noteligible for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.3. A minimum GPA of 2.5 is required for consideration to the Diagnostic Medical Sonographyprogram. By default, applicants’ overall GPA from Lake Michigan College will be used in theapplication review process. If student have transfer credit from another institution, but any of therequired prerequisite courses have been taken at Lake Michigan College, the Lake MichiganCollege GPA will be used. If no applicable prerequisite ranking courses have been taken at LakeMichigan College, the transfer college GPA from the college at which most of the applicant’sprerequisite courses were completed will be used.4. Applicants who hold an Advanced Placement (AP) exam score in any of the required classes willbe subject to an equivalency scale for that specific course. This allows points to be appliedappropriately following the points scale of the application. Workexperience must be independent employment that provides hands-on care to patients. Someexamples are: nurse aide, phlebotomy tech, medical assisting, assisting physicians withprocedures in a professional setting, taking blood pressures and vital signs, transporting patientson stretchers or wheelchairs, etc. Letters verifying work experience and/or copies of anyhealthcare credential, registry, or licensure must be submitted with your application in order tobe considered for additional points. Job shadows, observation hours, and clinical hours from priorprograms will not be considered for additional points, unless they are part of the ProfessionalHealth Careers Academy (PHCA). CPR certification is a program requirement (see page 6) for ALLadmitted students, and will not be accepted for additional points. Students who participated inPHCA must provide documentation or transcripts showing completion6. All clinical sites will be arranged and confirmed by the Health Sciences Office prior to studentsreceiving acceptance notifications. The clinical site is a third-party entity into which students areplaced for practical experience. LMC cannot guarantee that a clinical site will always be available.Arrangement for such a site depends upon the college’s ability to enter into formal agreementwith a proposed site. geographical location. All sonography clinical practicum courses are subject to special schedulingdates which may not follow traditional college semester calendars.While LMC uses its best efforts to negotiate clinical sites, even after they become available theycan become unavailable for reasons beyond the control of LMC and in that event LMC has noliability. No one at LMC has authority to modify the conditions and information outlined in thisapplication other than in writing signed by the Dean of Health Sciences.7. Based on the number of seats available only those applicants with the highest total combinedpoints of the application review and/or healthcare experience will be accepted.8. All accepted applicants will be required to submit a completed statement of health/physicalcondition. The completed physical statement needs to include: medical history, physical examresults, and immunizations. This statement must be received by the Health Sciences Office priorto any Sonography student beginning their clinical education.All accepted Sonography students will be required to submit proof of freedom fromcommunicable diseases through vaccination or a titer test: MMR, Varicella, Tdap, TB, andInfluenza. All accepted Sonography students must submit proof of Hepatitis B vaccination, titer,or a signed waiver.9. All accepted Sonography students must complete a drug screen and criminal background check,as required by the agreements LMC has with clinical sites. The cost for the drug screen andcriminal background check is the responsibility of the student and facilitated through a vendordesignated by LMC. The completed reports (with no active exclusions reported) must be receivedby the LMC Health Sciences Office prior to any Sonography student beginning their programclasses. LMC does not provide criminal background checks, drug screens, health physicals, and/orany required vaccinations.The cost for the drug screen and criminal background check is the responsibility of the studentand facilitated through a vendor designated by LMC. The completed reports (with no activeexclusions reported) must be received by the LMC Health Sciences Office prior to any Sonographystudent beginning their clinical rotation. Acceptance Process1. The order of acceptance of qualified applicants will be based on points achieved. All prerequisiteswill be completed before an applicant can begin the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program.2. If more than one qualified applicant achieves the same score in the point system for the lastremaining spot, the applicant with the highest overall LMC grade point average (GPA) will beselected.3. If you are not offered a space in the program you have applied for and wish to be reconsideredfor next year, you must re-submit another program application form for that program year. Yourapplication will NOT automatically be rolled over.4. Upon acceptance to the Sonography program, an applicant will receive an acceptance letter viae-mail. This will detail the remaining requirements admitted students must complete prior tostarting program classes. Admitted students must complete a background check, drug screen,vaccinations, TB testing, a physical exam using the LMC Health Certification form, and obtainProfessional Level CPR certification. Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider through American HeartAssociation or CPR for Professional Rescuer through Red Cross are acceptable levels of CPR forthe Sonography program. CPR certification MUST be maintained and current while in theSonography program. Fully online courses are not accepted. CPR is a requirement of allSonography students admitted to the program and does not earn additional points in theapplication review process.5. Notification of the applicant’s status in the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program will be March15, 2020 for the May 2020 Cohort. If a student chooses not to accept their seat in the program forthat year, they will need reapply for the next year and compete with the other applicants for thatyear. All notifications from the Health Sciences Office will be sent to students’ LMC e-mail address,and their personal e-mail address on file with the College.6. Students should keep their contact information up to date in WaveLink, and should inform theHealth Sciences Office of any changes. Technical Standards for AdmissionHealth Science DepartmentThe Health Science department faculty has specified the following non-academic criteria which applicantsgenerally are expected to meet in order to participate in the Health Sciences programs and professionalpractice. These technical standards are necessary and essential and have been developed to provide forthe health and safety of the patients receiving care from the health sciences department students.OBSERVATION – The applicant must be able to participate in all demonstrations, laboratory exercises,and clinical practicum in the clinical component and to assess and comprehend the condition of allpatients assigned for examination diagnosis and treatment.COMMUNICATION – The applicant must be able to communicate with patients to effectively elicit patientcompliance, understand and assess non-verbal communications; and be able to effectively transmitinformation to patients, physicians, paraprofessionals, faculty and staff in a timely way.PSYCHOMOTOR – The applicant must have motor functions sufficient to elicit information from patientsby appropriate diagnostic or therapeutic maneuvers; be able to perform basic tasks; possess all necessaryskills to carry out diagnostic or therapeutic procedures; be able to interpret movements reasonablyrequired to provide general care and emergent treatment/actions as necessary for patient safety andcomfort.INTELLECTUAL/ CONCEPTUAL, INTEGRATIVE, AND QUANTITATIVE ABILITIES – The applicant must be ableto measure, calculate, reason analyze, evaluate, and synthesize information and observations. Problemsolving, the critical skill demanded of health science practitioners, requires all of these cognitive abilities.BEHAVIOR AND SOCIAL ATTRIBUTES – The applicant must possess the emotional health required for fullutilization of intellectual abilities; execute appropriate medical judgment; the prompt completion ofassigned or non-assigned responsibilities for care of and service to the patient; and the development ofsupportive and effective relationships with patients.
