Program NotesIn a career that has spanned nearly seven decades, John Williams has composed some of the mostpopular, recognizable, and critically acclaimed film scores in cinematic history. With 52 AcademyAward nominations, he is the second most-nominated individual, after Walt Disney. His compositionsare considered the epitome of film music. In 2005, the American Film Institute selected Williams'sscore to 1977's Star Wars as the greatest film score of all time.It’s a Small World and Let’s Go Fly a Kite are by American songwriting duo Robert & Richard Sherman.They wrote It's a Small World for the 1964 New York World's Fair. It is claimed to be the mosttranslated and performed song on Earth, although this is largely because it is played continuously atDisney's theme park It's a Small World attraction of the same name. Let’s Go Fly a Kite was written forthe 1965 Disney movie Mary Poppins. Since Mary Poppins' premiere, the Shermans have subsequentlyearned nine Academy Award nominations, two Grammy Awards, four Grammy Award nominations,and 23 gold- and platinum-certified albums.The Phantom of the Opera, with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber, is based on the 1910 eponymousFrench novel by Gaston Leroux. The plot revolves around a beautiful soprano who becomes theobsession of a mysterious, masked musical genius living in the subterranean labyrinth of the ParisOpéra House. The musical opened in London's West End in 1986 and on Broadway in 1988. It iscurrently the longest running show in Broadway history with total estimated worldwide receipts ofover 7 billion. It has been seen by over 130 million people in 145 cities across 27 countries.Cinema Paradiso is a 1988 Italian drama film written and directed by Giuseppe Tornatore with scorecomposed by Ennio Morricone. It won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the62nd Academy Awards. In the movie, a filmmaker recalls his childhood falling in love with thepictures at the cinema of his home village and forming a deep friendship with the cinema'sprojectionist.The tale of a free-spirited young Austrian woman Maria, played by Julie Andrews, creates the heartwarming and much beloved film The Sound of Music. The music was written for a 1959 stage musicalby Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II and was later adapted for the 1965 movie. The filmwas a commercial success, becoming the number one box office movie after four weeks, the highestgrossing film of 1965, and winning five Academy Awards.Mission: Impossible is a series of American action spy films based on the television series of the samename created by Bruce Geller. The series is mainly produced by and stars Tom Cruise, whosecharacter is Ethan Hunt, an agent of the Impossible Missions Force (IMF). The films have beendirected, written, and scored from various filmmakers and crew, while incorporating musical themesfrom the original series by Lalo Schifrin. To date, six films have been released in the series.Star Trek: The Next Generation is the third series in the Star Trek franchise. Set in the 24th century,when Earth is part of the United Federation of Planets, it follows the adventures of a Starfleet starship,the USS Enterprise, in its exploration of the Milky Way galaxy. It originally aired from September 28,1987 to May 23, 1994 with 178 episodes.Set in a dystopian future where humanity is struggling to survive, Interstellar follows a group ofastronauts who travel through a wormhole near Saturn in search of a new home for mankind. In theoriginal movie score, the organ plays the starring role, and it was chosen by composer Hans Zimmerbecause of its significance to science: From the 17th century to the time of the telephone exchange,the pipe organ was known as the most complex man-made device ever invented.

About the ArtistsChristopher Urban is Associate Director of Musicand Organist at First Presbyterian Church ofArlington Heights. At First Pres, he leads theweekly worship services from the organ andserves as accompanist for the Chancel Choir,Chambers Singers and Men’s Chorus. Chris is alsoa featured recitalist in the church’s “Wednesday atNoon” concert series and is a frequent recitalist atchurches in the Chicago-land area. A native ofPittsburgh, PA he attended Indiana University,Bloomington, IN and received a degree in politicalscience and economics.A Chicago-based composer, pianist, organist, and harpsichordist, Marianne Kim has beennoted for her vibrant performances and compositions in a wide diversity of musical styles,such as classical, jazz, Broadway musical, R&B, gospel, traditional and contemporary churchmusic, and more.As a soloist and collaborative artist, Marianneenjoys performing piano and organ recitals,chamber music and jazz. She has worked forthe Lakeside Singers performing highlydemanding dual roles of classicalaccompanist and rhythm section keyboardistsince 2005 and served as Director of Musicand Organist for FUMC of Glen Ellyn, andkeyboardist for Willow Creek CommunityChurch and Moody Church. Currently she isPrincipal Organist at Christ Church of OakBrook.Marianne has been creating music for piano, organ, choral and instruments, and publishedthem through major publishers, including Lorenz Corp., Hope Publishing, Augsburg Fortressand Shawnee Press/Hal Leonard Corp, and has received critical acclaim for hercompositions. Marianne’s music has been described as “Intelligently crafted and quite artfulwith aural surprises” by Mark Hayes, “Sparkling arrangements with tasteful jazz harmoniesand rhythms” by Larry Shackley, and “Incorporating invigorating harmonies, syncopatedrhythms, and an assortment of jazz elements” by Douglas Wagner.Born and raised in Busan, Korea, Marianne studied piano and composition at Pusan HighSchool of Arts and earned a BM in composition at Pusan National University. Workingprofessionally over 10 years in the United States, she returned to school and earned dualMaster of Music in jazz studies and organ performance with scholarships and prizes fromNorthern Illinois University.

Gary Wendt is Minister for Music and Organist at GlenviewCommunity Church. A position he has held since 2005, Garywas previously GCC's Children's Choir Director from 20002002. He directs the Joyful Ringers Handbell Choir, thePilgrim Wind Ensemble, and is Artistic Director of the SimpleGifts Concert Series. Since 1977, Gary Wendt has heldvarious church music positions throughout Wisconsin andIllinois. He has studied organ with numerous instructorsincluding Jerome Butera and Margaret McElwain Kemper.Gary teaches music at Hubbard Woods Elementary School inWinnetka and is Founder of The Innocent Wisdom Project, aresearch compilation of inquiry-based arts educationprojects. He has received numerous awards for his work inthe field of music education and has worked with theeducation programs of Chicago Chamber Musicians, ChicagoChildren's Choir and served as advisor to the MetropolitanOpera Guild in New York - Creating Original Opera Program.Michael Gagne is an active musician and has performed organ recitals all over Illinois. Somenotable churches that Michael has performed at have been St. Luke's Episcopal Church inEvanston, First Presbyterian Church in Arlington Heights, North Park Covenant Church inChicago, Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago, and various other churches.In May of 2012, Michael graduated from North ParkUniversity where he obtained the Bachelor of Artsdegree in Music. In 2003, Michael obtained the ServicePlaying Certificate (SPC) From the American Guild ofOrganists.Some of Michael's instructors have been Dr. Marilyn KayStulken of Racine, Wisconsin, Dr. Marcia van Oyen, Dr.David Christiansen, and while at North Park he studiedthe organ under Mr. Leon Nelson.Currently in his 8th year, Michael is the PrincipalOrganist/Music Associate at the historic Saint MatthewLutheran Church (LCMS) in Hawthorn Woods where he is responsible for accompanying theChancel Choir, Glory Singers (TTBB group), and various ensembles throughout the church.In 2015 Michael became the School's General Music Teacher and has been teaching PreSchool through 6th grade music, and in addition as the Sunday School Music Teacher. In2019, Michael was an advisor on the new organ search committee and recommended with aunanimous vote for the three-manual Rodgers Infinity 361 (to succeed the previous 35-yearold digital organ) which was installed in May, 2019.Michael has previously served congregations in Arlington Heights, Villa Park and Lake Bluff.

About the OrganOur pipe organ is an instrument of tonal beauty and flexibility representing the finestdevelopment in tonal design. It was constructed by the Schantz Organ Company of Orrville,Ohio in 1972. This company is known nationally for its custom building of high-quality pipeorgans since 1873. Over the past several years tonaladditions have been made: Festival Trumpet (Reuter2005), nine digital stops (Walker Technical Company2005 & 2009), Vox Humana (Austin 2008), Diapason(Dean Christian 2011), Great Reed Chorus (A.R.Schopp 2017).The organ consists of four divisions. The Great andPedal organs are exposed. The Swell and Choirorgans are enclosed under expression. There areforty-three ranks totaling 2,391 pipes and 9 digitalvoices. The large metal pipes are made of annealedzinc for strength and light weight. The remainingmetal pipes are an alloy of tin and lead-tin for strength and lead for pliability. The spottedmetal produces desirable overtones.
