In the course of his lesson,he asked them, "When does the daybegin?" One replied, "When the Sun risesand its soft rays kiss the Earth thatreverberates like gold, then the day begins." But hisresponse did not please the rabbi. Then anotherdisciple pointed out, "When the birds begin to sing inchorus, and nature itself awakens to life after thenight's sleep, then the day begins." But neither didthe rabbi like this answer. And so, one after another,all the disciples were giving their answers. But noneof them pleased the rabbi. Finally, they all gave up,and asked him excitedly: "Now, tell us the rightanswer yourself! When does the day start?" And therabbi answered undisturbed: "When you see astranger in the dark, and you recognize in him yourBrother, then the day dawns! If you do not recognizeyour brother or sister in the stranger, the sun canrise, the birds can already sing, nature itself canawaken to life, which in your heart is still night anddarkness."This is what St. Irenaeus said: "The glory of God isthe living man, and the life of man is the vision ofGod."[11] Then the parable of the Good Samaritanwill become alive and speak to our hearts, becausethen we will know who our neighbor is, and we willfulfill the command that Jesus gave to the scribe ofthe Gospel: "Go, and do the same." We are invitedto something that goes beyond all law. Pero su respuestano complació al rabino.
