The continuing education activities are designed to strengthen the cooperationbetween the OPHP and state and local public health practitioners. The University of Medicineand Dentistry of New Jersey-School of Public Health (UMDNJ-SPH), established the OPHP topromote individual and community health through training, education and service. The programscontained within the OPHP are the Centers for Education and Training; The NY/NJ Public HealthTraining Center, funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration; and the Center forSchool and Community Health Education. The Centers forOffice of Public Education and Training (CET) offers high quality continuingHealth Practice education programs through four federally sponsoredcomponent organizations: the New York/New Jersey Educationand Research Center – Continuing Education and OutreachProgram (NIOSH); the New Jersey/ New York HazardousMaterials Worker Training Center (NIEHS); the Mid-AtlanticAsbestos Training Center (USEPA); and the Atlantic OSHATraining Center (USDOL). Atlantic OSHA Training CenterHow to Become a TrainerTo become an authorized trainer,you must complete a required OSHAtrainer course:Students are Presented their OSHA Safety and Health Specialist Certificate by the Faculty.Safety & Health Specialist Certificate ProgramProgram OverviewThe certification program is intended to give the health and safety professional comprehensiveknowledge of workplace hazards and an understanding of OSHA regulatory standards. Atlantic OSHA Training CenterOSHA 500 Trainer Course inOccupational Safety andHealth Standards forthe Construction IndustryOSHA 501 Trainer Coursein Occupational Safetyand Health Standards forGeneral IndustryThis course is designed for personnel in theprivate sector interested in teaching the 10and 30-hour construction safety and healthoutreach programs to their employees andother interested groups. Special emphasis isplaced on those topics that are required inthe 10- and 30-hour programs, as well as onthose that are the most hazardous, usingOSHA standards as a guide. Course participants are briefed on effective instructionalapproaches and the use of visual aids andhandouts. This course allows the student tobecome a trainer in the Outreach Program andto conduct both a 10- and 30-hour constructionsafety and health course and to issue cardsto participants verifying course completion.This course, designed for private sectorpersonnel, presents detailed informationon how the provisions of the OSH Act maybe implemented in the workplace. Atlantic OSHA Training CenterOSHA 2264 Permit-RequiredConfined Space EntryThis course is designed to enable studentsto recognize, evaluate, control and abatesafety and health hazards associated withpermit-required confined space entry. Thecourse focuses on the specific requirementsof 29 CFR 1910.146 (a) through (l). Eachparagraph of the standard is discussed withreferences to the OSHA directive, letters ofinterpretation and preamble rationale.Technical topics include the recognition ofconfined space hazards, basic informationabout instrumentation used to evaluateatmospheric hazards and general permitspace ventilation techniques.
