SIGMA KAPPATRIANGLEVolume 107, Issue 3The official magazine of Sigma Kappa Sororityfounded at Colby College, Waterville, ME,November 9, 1874Sigma Kappa National HeadquartersDear Sigma Kappa sisters,"From the outside looking in, you could neverunderstand it. From the inside looking out, youcould never explain it."A favorite motto of my chapter of initiation,I've chosen this phrase to illustrate the conceptof sisterhood because although sisterhood is oneof the most meaningful benefits of being in asorority, it is very hard to explain to someonewho has never experienced it.To me, sisterhood is a connection that goesbeyond friendship. It is the product of sharedexperiences, common interests, time spenttogether, and the incredible bond of participatingin Sigma Kappa ritual together.Sisterhood is an extraordinary force thattranscends generations, geography, andindividual loyalties. A Sigma Kappa is a SigmaKappa, no matter where she is from or when shejoined. In this issue, we explore some of the differentfacets of sisterhood. We'll get a glimpse of whatsisterhood was like in the 1970s from an alumnawho lived it. We also explore the NationalPanhellenic Conference and discuss SigmaKappa's new role in strengthening sisterhoodthroughout the 26 NPC member sororities. You'll also learn about the Alumnae HeartFund, which has been established to help SigmaKappas and their families, and how you cansupport a sister who truly needs it.What does sisterhood mean to you? I hopethis issue will make you think about yourunderstanding of sisterhood and remind you ofthe power and beauty of being a Sigma Kappa.8733 Founders RoadIndianapolis, IN 46268Telephone: 317-872-3275FA-X: 317-872-0716www.sigmakappa.orgHours of operation: 8 a.m.-5 p.m.Monday-FridayDirector of PublicationsMallory R. (9mTHE DESK OF.Dear sisters,What comes to mind when you hear the word "sisterhood"? Maybe it'syour experiences in college - recruitment, big sister revealing, Initiation, homecoming or enjoying movie night with your best friends in the chapter.Could it be graduating from college, finding a job, moving and being welcomedwith open arms by an alumnae chapter in your new location? Or possibly it'sthose late nights sitting around talking with your sisters during Convention.Whatever the memories are, I'm sure they are what keep you motivated andengaged with Sigma Kappa. As a founding member of my chapter, I will never forget the day that I and over100 of my sisters were initiated by the national president in a large ballroom inthe university student union. That's a memory that will never leave my mind ormy heart. At the time, we didn't even have a chapter house, but it wasn't aboutthe physical structure. It was about growing and building something we trulybelieved in one sister at a time.Sisterhood is also about Panhellenic relationships. As one of the 26 NationalPanhellenic Conference (NPC) organizations, we must reach out to one anotherand support each other. As a group, we can achieve so much more than we canas individual organizations. Sigma Kappa will soon rotate into the leadershipof the NPC. This is an important time for us and the entire conference. Iknow we all want Greek life to remain relevant and thriving for many years tocome. When we recite our vows during Initiation, we promise a lifelong commitmentto Sigma Kappa and our members. I am not sure if we fully understand themeaning of these vows until we become alumnae. Since we spend the majorityof our lives as alumnae, we should embrace and enjoy every facet of it, whetherassisting a collegiate chapter, mentoring a sister in her profession or just being afriend when a member needs someone to support her.Sisterhood is a unique aspect of sorority membership. We should display it withhonor and purpose. The national alumnae team has an initiative over the nextfew years to endow the Sigma Kappa Foundation Alumnae Heart Fund. Weencourage you to join us in this important endeavor. This will be sisterhood atits best!Loyally in Sigma Kappa, "! Pamela L. HEARTS 11( 11-tA RIGHTFULRENOVATIONAlumna chosen for Extreme Makeover: Home EditionBeta Tau, University of Florida, alumna Jill Dumas Wagstaff and herfamily usually devote all their time andresources to helping others. So whenthe ABC TV show "Extreme Makeover:Home Edition" chose them to receive afull home renovation, they were elatedand excited about the life-changingopportunity.Jill and her husband Tobin run a notfor-profit music school out of theirhome called Studio Percussion, Inc. TheThe Wagstaff family during a press conference forschool serves more than 200 students,"Extreme Makeover: Home Edition."half of whom receive financial aid or fullscholarship. It specializes in the use of drums and other percussion instruments to inspirestudents toward community development and involvement. The main studio also doubles asa bedroom for two of the four Wagstaff children. The school can only afford to pay a salaryfor Tobin, so Jill also works as a preschool teacher for supplementary income. She is also anadvisor for the Beta Tau chapter.Devoting so much time to their business, the community andtheir four children left little time or money for taking care oftheir house, so the Wagstaff home had fallen into a state ofdisrepair. The roof and floorboards were rotting away, theelectrical system throughout the entire home was faulty, andthere was very little in the way of space or privacy for thefamily. The new house will give the Wagstaffs more space andtime to dedicate to the music school and will help the family tolive more harmoniously.Dallas Wagstaff with GeneSimmons of KISS on thefamily 's rock and roll vacation. The week-long renovation took place in mid-December. Whilethe crew from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" renovatedthe house,Jill, Tobin and their children, TobinJr., Rudy, Dallasand Larissa, were sent on a surprise rock and roll vacation. Theepisode aired on Sunday, February 21 on ABC. Full episodesare available to watch online at abc.go.com/ shows/ extrememakeover-home-edition.7SIGMA KAPPA TRJANGLEIWI NTER. 2010

Sisterhoodreply echoing from thethe white brick house we allaway from home. "She's still1970's and there were twentyin the Central MichiganKappa chapter house atStreet. On weekends, someone's Plymouth Duster, player and went home. But during the week, were our family. We livedre cell phones, computers,we shared four rotary dialan impatient aggravation.n!Life tended to movea lot slower backthen. We did a lotof waiting, and notjust for our turn touse the phone. Wewaited for our datesto show up, wearingour best polyesterpants paired with acowl neck sweateror a shiny collaredSIG8blouse opened atthe neck with amatching scarftied in a knot. Our hair wasstyled in somevariation of the"Farrah" withthe center partand feathered wings. Yes, we thought thiswas supremely cool, though today, it wouldprobably be called "hot."Looking back, we probably created a firehazard. Mter all, we needed all the electricaloutlets in the house for curling irons andelectric rollers, along with cans of hairspray,to maintain the flicks that made the perfecthairstyle. Those of us with fuller locks wouldhave paid big money for one of today'sflat irons. Some of us went to extremesincluding my sister, who used a clothing ironto straighten her hair-in the name of beauty. Those without a date on a Saturday nightgathered around the one television in thehouse for an episode of "The Love Boat."There was no recording or pausing it viaVCR or DVR. You showed up, fought fora spot on the couch and those who lost outwere relegated to the floor.

Unlike today, Thursday nightsweren't "Must See TV"usmg"Saturday Night Fever." Weweren't fortunate enough to havestrobe lights or disco balls, butthat didn't mean we wouldn'thave jumped at the chance to usethem if given the opportunity. Wedid have lots of cigarette smoke,a result of being uninformedabout the true health hazards. Agood party would go into the weehours of the morning and you'dleave exhausted from dancing andtypically smelling like an ashtray. Those of us more concernedabout our studies could be foundat the library in front of an electricSmith Corona typewriter, workingon a paper. A certain amount ofluck was needed to secure thesetypewriters, but showing up on aFlashing forward to 2010, weall have iPods, creating a moreSaturday night gave you an edge.On a weeknight, you were reallytaking your chances. This waslong before desktop and laptopcomputers and it is truly amazingthat we ever turned in completedassignme nts.Luckily some sisters owned stereosystems that the rest of us couldenjoy. We sang and danced toTodd Rundgren or Earth, Windand Fire using a hairbrush as amicrophone. Even if you didn'thave your own stereo, we allcollected albums and I still don'thave the heart to throw out myBeatles, Eagles, Boz Scaggs andTavares records.which is my lifeline to the world,my son in Florida, my sister inKansas, my sorority sisters onFacebook, and the websites Iuse for work and entertainment.Without my laptop, this articlewould have been handwrittenin pencil, erased, rewritten andfinally typed with a bottle of whiteout nearby. All in all, I don't want togive up any of these modernconveniences, but I would forone more night with my sisters inthat cramped, loud, sometimesfrustrating, but always lovingSigma Kappa house in 19 7 7.- Diane Hickey Carter, Delta Delta9SIGMA KAPPA TRJANGLEI WINTER 2010

A NEW CALLINGFOR SIGMA KAPPAOur sorority's role in helping Greek women"Grow, Give, Lead, Succeed"his New Year's Eve weushered in a new decadewith not only champagneand confetti, but also a blue moon. No, it wasn't really blue--it wasthe second full moon in a calendarmonth, which only happens seventimes every 19 years, hence thecliche "once in a blue moon."TOnce in a blue moon is abouthow often a sorority has theopportunity to serve on theexecutive committee of theNational Panhellenic Conference(NPC) . More specifically, every46 years, the chance to hold thechairman position comes full circle(the rotation is according to eachmember group's chronologicalentrance into NPC).Past NPC chairman Beth Saul(198 7-1 989), Alpha Epsilon Phi,put it this way: "It is a way everyhalf century to take on leadershipin the Panhellenic communityand showcase your nationalorganization's pride in its ideals."In just a few short years SigmaKappa will again have thehonor of standing at the helmof the organization representingNPC adopts uniform scholarshipand house rules for collegiansand promotes women enteringprofessions other than teaching.NPC appoints committees forextension, scholarship standards, andreports on college facilities for studentsocial affairs. Besides the climbing, I have really enjoyed writingthe stories for the website after each climb. Everyone has been supportiveof our endeavor, and like the idea, and we have anice little "fan club" that follows our climbs. Whenwe climb we carry a SPOT satellite tracker, so thatanyone that goes to our website (www.climb 14ers.org)can follow our tracks live via Google Earth. We alsopost stories and photos after each climb.
