FRIDAY PROGRAMThe Journey Guide: Advancing DEI - From Understanding to ActionExecutives and elected leaders of veterinary medical associations are invited to this workshop on advancingdiversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in veterinary medicine. In 2021, VMAE developed Journey: A Guide forAdvancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Veterinary Medicine, designed for VMAs to incorporate DEI into theirstrategic framework with a menu of resources and program ideas. Participants will explore resources providedin Journey, hear multiple perspectives, engage in facilitated dialog, and develop an action plan for the next stepstheir organizations can take to advance DEI.Executives are invited to bring up to two elected leaders from each VMA to this special workshop program, tobe noted on the conference registration form.Kim D’AbrueCandace JoyDr. Christine JenkinsDr. Debbye Turner BellJohn TramontanaDr. Dane WhitakerDr. Mia istPanelistJourney for Teams: A Guide for Advancing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Veterinary WorkplacesAs a logical follow up to Journey, VMAE is partnering with AVMA and other stakeholders to bring a guide to theveterinary profession designed specifically for veterinary workplaces, including core DEI principles, the rationalefor advancing DEI, and action steps on how DEI concepts and behaviors can be implemented in a veterinaryworkplace. Ralph Johnson, former CEO of VMAE and consultant on this project, will provide a brief overview andupdate.Gender Identity Bill of RightsDeveloped by PrideVMC, this document presents a minimum foundation to identify and eliminate discriminatorypractices against transgender, non-binary, and gender non-conforming individuals in the veterinary profession,including educational and employment environments. Dr. Ewan Wolff, one of the authors of the bill of rights, willprovide us with a brief overview and update.Preview of VMAE GENUS: A New Tool to Support Professional Skills DevelopmentYou will be among the first to learn about VMAE’s latest benefit designed to support VMA executives in providingtheir members with personal and professional development content. GENUS was developed in response to ourmembers’ need for content similar to the Power of 10 program, but that is distributed more widely through digitalmeans. We are partnering with rasa.io to utilize their artificial intelligence tools for content sourcing and curation,which enables both scalability and sustainability. Molly Phayer, Manager of Customer Success at rasa.io, willwalk us through the platform and various ways VMAs can create continuing content streams delivered via digitalnewsletters in nine GENUS domains such as time management, growing revenue, and customer service.

SATURDAY PROGRAMMember Share: Exploring Topics of Common InterestBack by popular demand, VMA executives discuss topics of common interest in an informal setting. MemberShare is a chance to learn about what’s happening in other VMAs and explore solutions and approaches tosimilar challenges. Conference registrants will be polled in advance on their topic preferences. The ProfessionalDevelopment Committee has developed a list for your consideration, including such topics as the changing workenvironment, engaging recent graduates and members, the new world of conference management, printed vs.digital communications, managing a foundation, and much more!Membership Meeting LuncheonJoin us for the official annual business meeting of VMAE during lunch on Saturday. You will hear updates fromthe VMAE Board of Directors, committee chairs, and from CEO Adrian Hochstadt. We will also hold theinstallation of new VMAE officers and thank outgoing officers for their service.SCHOLARSHIPSThanks to the support provided by VMAE Strategic Initiative Partners, we can offer four scholarships forVMAE Summer Conference 2022. Two scholarships are available to VMAE members who would nototherwise be able to participate due to their association’s limited operating budget. Two additionalscholarships are available for new professionals – members who are new to VMAE or are new to theveterinary medical association setting. Each scholarship waives the meeting registration fee and providesreimbursement for up to 500 for travel and lodging costs.To be considered for a scholarship, please write a brief (1-2 paragraph) explanation of your desire toparticipate in VMAE Summer Conference 2022 (and your financial need, except in the case of newprofessionals). Kim D’AbreuKim D’Abreu is a seasoned leader in the non-profit space who brings 25 years of experience designing and managingnational, impactful, workforce diversity and inclusion programs. As a credible thought leader within the education,healthcare, and non-profit sectors, she has built an impeccable reputation for managing the culture and complexities ofenvironments. Her expertise includes effectively developing tools, strategies, and written resources focused on climate andcultural competency to promote the success of women, racial and ethnic minorities, LGBT communities, and othermarginalized groups. She is trained as an executive coach, and, as such, is an effective communicator with high emotionalintelligence. Kim is certified in facilitation by the Leadership Strategies Institute and in The Leadership Circle 360 Profile.She obtained her Certificate in Leadership Coaching from Georgetown University with a PCC Certification and holds a BSfrom The Johns Hopkins University and MPH from Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health. As a New Yorktransplant living in Washington, DC, Kim spends her spare time enjoying live music and theater and relaxing with herdaughter and two cats Brook & Lyn.Candace JoyCandace Joy has served as Chief Executive Officer of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association since 2002. Sheis a past president of Veterinary Medical Association Executives, currently chairs VMAE’s Diversity, Equity, and InclusionCommittee, and serves on the DEI Advisory Group to the AVMA/AAVMC Commission for a Diverse, Equitable and InclusiveVeterinary Profession. Candace enjoys writing, hiking, travel, and the arts. She has two grown children, a beautifulgranddaughter, and one cat, a ginger tabby who answers to Pookie – or anything else as long as there’s food.Dr. Christine JenkinsDr. Christine Jenkins leads the Zoetis Medical Affairs, Academic and Professional Affairs, Scientific Information, andOutcomes Research groups. As a member of the Zoetis U.S. Leadership Team, Dr. Jenkins serves as the Chief VeterinaryMedical Officer for U.S. Operations and is responsible for strategic partnerships with the colleges of veterinary medicineand professional associations of relevance across U.S. Operations. She is responsible for the Zoetis Commitment toVeterinarians platform and philanthropic efforts which includes support of the veterinary profession through scholarships,veterinary wellness initiatives, disaster relief, and diversity. Prior to joining Zoetis, Dr. Jenkins held Director roles in clinicalresearch, regulatory affairs, and marketing at Pfizer Animal Health, Merial Ltd., and Hill’s Pet Nutrition. She received her B. S.in Animal Science from Florida A & M University, followed by a DVM from Tuskegee University. For over 20 years, Dr.Jenkins has held various leadership roles within the animal health industry. Currently, she serves as co-chair of theCommission for a Diverse, Equitable, and Inclusive Veterinary Profession, as well as on the Board of Directors of theDiversify Veterinary Medicine Coalition.Dr. Debbye Turner BellDr. Debbye Turner Bell is a veterinarian, author, journalist, motivational speaker, workshop facilitator, corporate trainer, andMiss America 1990. For more than two decades, she has addressed audiences in the corporate, academic, and communityservice arenas. In addition to her speaking and media work, Dr. Turner Bell is the Founder and CEO of Debbye Turner BellConsulting, through which she provides leadership development training in communications, influence, and diversity tocorporate and business leaders, managers, and executives. Dr. Turner Bell combined her expertise from her VeterinaryMedical degree and her vast public relations and speaking experience as Miss America to forge a career in broadcastjournalism. She hosted a national pet show called “The Gentle Doctor” and went on to host a variety of news andentertainment programs on the local and national levels. Recently, she served as the lead U.S. news anchor for Arise News,a global cable news network. Currently, she can be seen as an expert contributor to the shows “DOGS 101” and “CATS 101”on Animal Planet. For 11 years, Dr. Turner Bell was a staff correspondent for CBS News. Dr. Turner Bell graduated from theUniversity of Missouri-Columbia with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree inagriculture from Arkansas State University. Dr. Turner Bell lives in Grand Rapids, Michigan with her husband and daughter.

John TramontanaJohn Tramontana, MS, CAE, is in his fourth year as the CEO of the Michigan Veterinary Medical Association. Prior to that,John led the Communications, Public Relations and Marketing team at the Michigan Association of School Boards. He hasalso worked in healthcare marketing, politics, as a website reporter for the Buffalo Bills, and as a TV news anchor/reporterthroughout Michigan. He has two degrees from Michigan State University—a B.A. in Journalism and a M.S. in Management,Strategy & Leadership from the Broad School of Business. John is currently a board member for the Veterinary MedicalAssociation Executives, the Michigan Society of Association Executives, and serves as Vice President of his local schoolboard. John and his wife, Jessica, live just outside of Lansing with their two daughters, Isla and Gia, and two dogs, Rosieand Zola.Dr. Dane WhitakerDr. Dane Whitaker (he, him) has been practicing veterinary medicine in the San Francisco area for over 25 years. Hecompleted his Masters in Preventive Veterinary Medicine at UC Davis in 2017 and is currently providing small animal clinicalrelief services across central California. He is also a relief veterinarian at the Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito CA, and heprovides clinical as well as field support for marine mammal research projects. Although a Bay Area native, he grew up inFlorida and graduated from the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1994. After graduation, he completeda small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Santa Cruz Veterinary Hospital. His veterinary interests include smallanimal medicine, clinical pathology, marine mammal medicine, and One Health. Dr. Whitaker is the president of the PrideVeterinary Medical Community and takes an active role in promoting the ideas of inclusion and acceptance for all membersof the community in the veterinary profession.Dr. Mia CaryDr. Mia Cary (she, her, hers), a 1999 University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine graduate, has a personal andprofessional purpose of activating others to thrive. In addition to speaking, meeting facilitation, association leadership, andcustomized consulting projects, Dr. Cary reserves a portion of every week for her coaching clients. Her professionalexperience includes executive leadership and education roles at the AVMA, NAVC, Boehringer Ingelheim, and NovartisAnimal Health. She currently serves as CEO and Change Agent for Cary Consulting, CEO for the Pride Veterinary MedicalCommunity (PrideVMC), serves on the board of advisors for the Veterinary Entrepreneurship Academy (VEA), and is a PastPresident of the American Association of Industry Veterinarians (AAIV). She resides with the Cary Crew in Greensboro, NCand recognizes the Eno, Sappony, and Shakori nations on whose land she lives and works.
