After coughing up a first-period goal, the Portland Winterhawks roared back with four unansweredgoals from Gabe Klassen, Aidan Litke, Jonah Bevington and Dawson Pasternak en route to a 4-1 victory at the VMC onFriday. A disjointed first period for both teams gave way to a 1-0 Spokane lead at 12:27 as Cordel Larson wired a shot intothe top corner from the right circle on the power play. Portland held a shot advantage through 20 minutes, though, andbegan to build a game early in the second period. Gabe Klassen leveled the score with an eerily similar goal to Larson’s– a missile of a wrist shot into the top corner from the same circle to get the Hawks on the board at 1:37 of the middleframe. Portland poured it on from there, with Aidan Litke lighting the lamp for a third straight game at 6:52 and JonahBevington potting his first career WHL goal just over a minute later. Litke found twine with a seeing-eye, spin around shotfrom the left circle that eluded Beaupit’s blocker, while Bevington hammered a Marcus Nguyen rebound under Beaupit’spad to make it 3-1 Hawks midway through the period. The third period began with more of the same, as Jaydon Dureauconnected with a wide-open Dawson Pasternak in front of the net to give Portland a 4-1 lead just 18 seconds into the thirdperiod. The Hawks held on comfortably from there, as Dante Giannuzzi finished the night with 25 saves on 26 shots.Spokane goaltender Mason Beaupit turned aside 30 of 34 shots in the Chiefs’ loss.6-13-2-110-10-3-15th in U.S.3rd in .8%79.8%GAME DAY NOTABLES. PORTLAND WINTERHAWKS HOCKEYPORTLAND VS. SPOKANE DECEMBER 10, 2021 7:00 p.m. PT VETERANS MEMORIAL COLISEUMBACK-TO-BACK IN THE NHL DRAFT. Two Portland Winterhawks went in consecutive picks duringthis summer’s NHL Draft, as Tyson Kozak and Ryan McCleary went first and second, respectively, in the seventhround. Kozak, who was selected by Buffalo, will attempt to put together a full season in Portland after missingseveral games due to injury last season. Known for his responsible play in all three zones, Kozak can be foundplaying center and relied upon in almost all situations. McCleary was picked by the Pittsburgh Penguins afteran outstanding rookie year in the Rose City, leading all first-year Hawks with seven points during the shortenedseason. The right-handed blueliner showed a knack for jumping into the play, letting his offensive prowess shinemore and more as the season went on.It is the fourth time a pair of Winterhawk teammates have gone back-to-back in the NHL Draft, most recently RyanJohansen (4th) and Nino Niederreiter (5th) in 2010. The Hawks have now helped 145 players get drafted, a WHLhigh, since relocating to Portland in 1976.VETERAN GROUP. After sending four signed 2005-born prospects to Canadian clubs afrer preseason play, the Winterhawks entered the season without a full-time 16-year-old on their roster. According to team historianand broadcaster Andy Kemper, only three times in team history has a 16-year-old skater not played in at least tengames in Portland. The most recent occurrence came in 1988-1989 when Vince Cocciolo appeared in ten contests.Only then in 1977-1978 with Dave Babych (six) and 1976-1977 with Jay McFarlane (three) did this happen.FAMILY TIES Rookie forward Kyle Chyzowski comes from a lineage of hockey players. The Chyzowskishave been in the hockey scene for a couple of decades. His father Barry and uncles Dave and Ron Chyzowski allplayed for the St. Albert Saints of the Alberta Junior Hockey League. All three would go on to have healthy hockeycareers and now Kyle, the next of the second generation, is set to join cousins Nick (Kamloops, 2013 – 2018) andRyan Chyzowski (Medicine Hat, 2016 – 2021) in having an impact on the Western Hockey League. Both of hiscousins have worn a letter during their time in the WHL. Kyle was drafted in the 3rd round, 58th overall, by theWinterhawks in the 2019 WHL Bantam Draft.Defenseman Ryan McCleary also comes from a hockey family. His father Trent won a Memorial Cup in 1989with the Swift Current Broncos and he played in the Mem Cup again during the 1992-93 season during his finalyear in juniors. He went on to play 192 career NHL games with the Ottawa Senators, Boston Bruins and MontrealCanadiens. Ryan’s sister Maddy is also playing USports Hockey at St. Mary’s University.HOFER’S NIGHT TO REMEMBER. Alumni goaltender Joel Hofer made his NHL debut on November 4with the St. Louis Blues, picking up his first NHL win and first NHL assist in a 23-save effort against the San JoseSharks. What made the night more fun from a Winterhawks perspective is that he faced fellow Hawks alumnusAdin Hill. The Winnipeg, Man. product helped guide the Winterhawks to a 2019-20 Scotty Munro Championshipand he boasted a 42-16-3-2 all-time record with Portland, including six shutouts, .913 SV% and 2.67 GAA. He isnow back playing in the AHL with the Springfield Thunderbirds, posting a 5-1-1-0 record with a 2.56 GAA and .911SV%. Hofer became the 131st Winterhawk to play in the NHL and second Hawk in a week span with Jarvis.A LEGEND HANGS ‘EM UP. Former two-year Winterhawk captain Braydon Coburn (2001-05) announced that he was retiring from the National Hockey League. The news comes after playing 983 NHL gamesin 16 seasons for five organizations (Atlanta, Philadelphia, Tampa Bay, Ottawa, New York). Coburn, now 36,became the 10th former Winterhawk player to win a Stanley Cup in his career when he captured it in 2020with the Lightning. The Shaunavon, Sask. native was named the WHL Rookie of the Year (2001-02), WHLHumanitarian of the Year (2003-04), and a two-time WHL First Team All-Star.
