Higher Education Conference February 20, 2007SpeakersPeter Ewell is Vice President of the National Center for Higher EducationManagement Systems (NCHEMS), a research and development center foundedto improve the management effectiveness of colleges and universities. Dr. Ewell’swork focuses on assessing institutional effectiveness and the outcomes of college,and involves both research and direct consulting with institutions and state systemson collecting and using assessment information in planning, evaluation, andbudgeting. Dr. Ewell has authored six books on the topic of improving undergraduateinstruction through the assessment of student outcomes. Among his publicationsare The Self-Regarding Institution: Information for Excellence and AssessingEducational Outcomes.Rosemary Hayes is the Director of the Consortium for Student Retention DataExchange (CSRDE) at the University of Oklahoma. She has served as NSFProgram Evaluator as well as a Primary Investigator (PI) for a number of programsrelated to the retention and development of minority students in the sciences. Inaddition, she has served as an advisor to the Department of Education’s NationalPostsecondary Education Council (NPEC) on student persistence and completion.She has a number of published works as author and editor in the fields of studentretention and in computing information services. Dr. Hayes also enjoys interactingdirectly with students as an Adjust Assistant Professor for the College of Liberalstudies at the University of Oklahoma.George D. Kuh is Chancellor’s Professor of Higher Education atIndiana University Bloomington where he directs the Center forPostsecondary Research, home to the National Survey of Student Engagement(NSSE) and related initiatives. A past president of the Association for the Study ofHigher Education (ASHE), Dr. Kuh has written extensively about studentengagement, assessment, institutional improvement, and college and universitycultures and has consulted with educational institutions and agencies in the U.S. andabroad. His most recent books are Student Success in College: Creating ConditionsThat Matter (2005) and Piecing Together the Student Success Puzzle which will appearlater this spring.Judith B. Wertheim is Vice President for Higher Education Services at the Councilfor Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL). She oversees CAEL's work inprior learning assessment, Adult Learning Focused Institutions (ALFI) and otherCAEL consulting and training activities with colleges and universities. Prior tojoining CAEL in 2006, Dr. Wertheim served as Interim Dean of the School ofContinuing Studies at Indiana University.11
