The trucks would get more powerfuland boast higher tow ratings, and SUVs wouldget bigger, heavier and more luxurious. Andsome of that is still true. But there are someinteresting vehicles up for consideration thisyear, the likes of which we’ve never seen before. So fasten your seatbelts, because here comes2018’s most newsworthy tow vehicles.FIAT CHRYSLER AUTOMOBILESTo those who believe performance ends wherethe third row begins, Dodge presents theDurango SRT. Packing a 6.4-liter, 475-horsepower Hemi engine, eight-speed automatic4 TRAILER LIFE 2018 TOWING GUIDEtransmission and all-wheel drive, the DurangoSRT can reach 60 MPH in under five seconds andcovers the quarter mile in under 13 seconds, according to Dodge. That’s impressive — butthose with a family to haul and a trailer to towmay be just as interested in the SRT’s three-rowseating and 8,700-pound tow rating. A new hoodbristling with performance cues like a hoodscoop and heat extractors is accompanied by anew front fascia and a lower valance housing acold-air duct and LED fog lamps. Black 20-inchwheels wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires hide 15inch Brembo discs with six-piston calipers frontand 13.8-inchers with four pistons rear. Eightdriving modes, including Valet and Tow, help theDurango adapt to a variety of situations.

2018 TOW GUIDE - new trucks ad SUVs.indd 11/3/17 10:03 AM - 5 -(Cyan)(Magenta)(Yellow)(BlacK)By Chris HemerSOUTHFORKFOR 2018, FAST, LIGHT AND LUXURIOUSRam has once again grabbed top honorsin towing capability, with the most torque andhighest fifth-wheel tow rating in the segment.Working closely with Cummins, a 30 LB-FTtorque gain (for a total of 930) was made possible by higher turbo boost limits and an increased fuel-system flow rate. Combined witha new in-house-designed fifth-wheel hitch, the Ram 3500 dually can now tow a 30,000pound fifth-wheel (31,210 gooseneck), makinga larger Class 4 or 5 tow vehicle unnecessary. The hitch will be available as an upfit packagefor the Ram 3500 through Mopar (part number82215769); MSRP is 1,395.In what appears to be an ongoing battlefor Most Luxurious Pickup (or Longest Name)honors, Ram has entered the new LaramieLonghorn Southfork Edition and Heavy DutyLone Star Silver Edition to its lineup. As youmight expect of a model with Longhorn in thename, the Southfork is swathed in plenty ofcowhide — Canyon Brown and Light FrostBeige Natura Plus 100 percent full-grainleather, to be exact — complemented byleather-wrapped A- and B-pillar grab handlesand a real walnut-trimmed steering wheel, bygolly. Galvanized-appearance trim pieces dotthe cabin, along with real ash-wood accentsand Ruby Red stitchin’.The Heavy Duty Lone Star Silver Editionjoins the already popular Ram 1500 modelof the same name and offers cloth and vinylhigh-back bucket seats in Canyon Brown andLight Frost Beige or Black and Diesel Gray. And there’s lots of shiny stuff. We’re talkin’ anew luxury grille with chrome surround andchrome Wave Mesh inserts, plus bright beltmoldings, chrome exterior side-view mirrors, chrome wheel-to-wheel side steps, polished20-inch wheels and front tow hooks. The Laramie Longhorn Southfork Edition is availableon Ram 1500/2500/3500 4x2 and 4x4 Crew Caband Mega Cab, long or short box, while theHeavy-Duty Lone Star Silver Edition is availableon Ram 2500/3500 4x2 and 4x4 Crew Cab.Most. Powerful. SUV. Ever. Those aresome pretty strong words, but the Jeep GrandCherokee Trackhawk can back them up witheven stronger numbers: 707 horsepower, 645LB-FT of torque, zero to 60 in 3.5 seconds, quarter mile in 11.6 seconds, top speed of 180 MPH.As an RVer, this may not mean much to you, butwe’d be remiss if we didn’t at least acknowledge a game-changing vehicle, especially onethat is powered by a 6.2-liter superchargedHemi V-8 and can still tow up to 7,400 pounds. The Trackhawk comes standard with an eightspeed automatic transmission and an AWDsystem featuring a five-drive-mode SelecTrack system. Hauling a trailer or hauling themail, this SUV can do it all.TRAILER LIFE 2018 TOWING GUIDE 5

Then the Super Duty. Now the 2018 Ford Expedition and LincolnNavigator have gone on a diet, courtesy ofan aluminum-alloy body riding atop a highstrength steel frame. As with previous generations, two wheelbase options are available(Expedition and Expedition Max; Navigator andNavigator L). Expedition trim levels includeXLT, Limited and Platinum, and a new FX4 OffRoad Package available for the XLT includesupgraded shocks, a heavy-duty radiator, 18inch Magnetic Metallic painted cast-aluminumwheels, an electronic limited-slip differentialand underbody skid plates. The Navigator isoffered in Premier, Select, Reserve and BlackLabel trim levels. The only engine available in either model isthe ubiquitous 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6; however, power output varies depending on the model. For example, the more plebian Expeditiongets a respectable 375 horsepower, while thePlatinum trim is boosted to 400 horsepower, and the Navigator generates 450 horsepower. The engine features start/stop technology andis backed by a 10-speed automatic transmission for optimal fuel economy and a max towrating of 9,300 pounds in the Expedition and8,700 pounds in the Navigator. As you’ve likelycome to expect from SUVs, rear-wheel drive isstandard; four-wheel drive with Terrain Management System is optional, and a wide rangeof safety and luxury features are available atadditional cost.Back in the early ’90s, Ford’s tagline wasEXPEDITION“The Best Never Rest.” And Ford rarely hassince then, constantly pushing the envelope tomake sure its best-selling F-150 remains ontop. This year, Ford has upped the ante acrossthe lineup, with new features that include standard Auto Start/Stop for all engines, an all-new3.3-liter V-6 with port and direct-injection technology and flex-fuel capability (late availability),and electronic six- and 10-speed automatictransmissions with selectable drive modes.Already in its second-generation, the 2.7-literEcoBoost now has advanced dual-port anddirect-injection technology, while the stalwart5.0-liter V-8 brings significant upgrades, including advanced dual-port and direct-injection technology. Major exterior updates acrossthe lineup include new grilles, bumpers, lighting, tailgate and wheels. The interior receivesminor updates. Not everyone who needs a truck will use itto haul rocks, dirt, hay and utility trailers. Somewill haul gold-plated yachts and diamondencrusted Rolls Royces (we jest, of course). Ford’sresearch suggests that more than 50 percentof Super Duty sales in 2017 consisted of highend models like the Lariat, King Ranch andPlatinum series, so why not gild the lily? Insidethe Limited model are Custom Camelback twotone leather seats, a leather-wrapped steeringwheel, armrests and instrument panel, suedeheadliner, hand-finished dark ash wood trimand special badging. In a nod to the luxury vehicles and sports carsits customers probably already have in theirclimate-controlled garages, each Limited alsohas a dedicated serial number laser-etched onthe center console armrest. Outside, the Limited distinguishes itself from lesser models witha special twin-bar satin-chrome grille, quadbeam LED lights and satin-finished tailgate appliqué. Class-exclusive tech featuresinclude high-definition 360-degree cameraswith Trailer Reverse Guidance, Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) with trailer coverage, adaptive cruise control, adaptive steering, andniceties such as a full panoramic moonroof, heated and ventilated seats and a heated steering wheel. The Super Duty Limited Crew Cabarrives this winter with Ford’s 6.7-liter PowerStroke diesel V-8 across F-250, F-350 and F-450single- and dual-rear-wheel configurations.GENERAL MOTORSUnlike the rough and tumble adventurouslifestyle an SUV would suggest, today’s SUVbuyer expects luxury, convenience and refinement. So GM is delivering with a significantlyupdated Buick Enclave that promises everything its customers expect. An all-new bodystructure includes a standard MacPhersonstrut front/five-link rear suspension tuned forride comfort, and seven-passenger seatingwith more legroom than competitive offerings from Acura, Audi and Infiniti, according toBuick. It also boasts 10 percent more cubic feetof overall interior space (including the hiddenunderfloor storage) and 23.6 cubic feet of cargospace behind the third row.Power to tow up to 5,000 pounds comesfrom a 310-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 withfuel-saving stop/start technology, mated to anine-speed automatic transmission. As youwould expect, the Enclave comes standard withfront-wheel drive but is available with an “intelligent” AWD featuring an active twin-clutchrear differential. Standard safety equipment on8 TRAILER LIFE 2018 TOWING GUIDENAVIGATORall 2018 Enclaves includes a rear-vision camera, rear park assist and seven airbags. Among theavailable crash-avoidance technologies areforward collision alert, rear cross-traffic alert,lane-keep assist with lane-departure warning,a safety-alert seat, following-distance indicatorand front park assist. Standard equipment onevery 2018 Enclave includes keyless entry andpush-button start, a hands-free power-programmable liftgate, tri-zone automatic climatecontrol, universal home remote, six USB portsand OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. If you anticipate traveling where no man (orwoman) has gone before, then consider the newChevy Colorado ZR2. Designed with back-trailbashing in mind, the ZR2 rides 2 inches tallerand has a front/rear track that’s 3.5 incheswider than a standard Colorado. Model-specificgear includes class-exclusive front and rearelectronic locking differentials, a segment-firstoff-road application of Multimatic DynamicSuspensions Spool Valve (DSSVTM) dampertechnology, functional rock sliders and modified front bumpers (with integrated skid plate)for a better approach angle off road. Exclusive17-by-8-inch aluminum wheels with 31-inchGoodyear Wrangler DuraTrac off-road tiresand a more aggressive grille and hood (with ablack insert) complete the alpha-male look.Powered by a 308-horsepower, 3.6-liter gas V-6or a 186-horsepower, 2.8-liter turbodiesel inlinefour, the ZR2 tows up to 5,000 pounds.Automotive history has shown that each newvehicle generation typically arrives heavier thanthe last. Safety features, as well as a growing listof creature comforts inevitably add heft, evenENCLAVE

Yet somehow, GM managed toshed a claimed 400 pounds from its Chevy Equinox, all while creating a confident design with anall-new interior. The Equinox is also equippedwith some svelte new powerplants, including astandard 1.5-liter turbocharged inline four, anda 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four/nine-speedtransaxle option that can tow up to 3,500 pounds. For the first time, the Equinox is also offeredwith a 1.6-liter turbodiesel that is expected todeliver a segment-topping 39 MPG, although it israted to tow only 1,500 pounds. Offered in L, LS,LT and Premier trim levels with available AWD,Equinox has new available safety features aswell as a wide range of available options andconnectivity technologies including 7- and8-inch-diagonal MyLink infotainment systemsand OnStar 4G LTE Wi-Fi hotspot. A close corporate cousin of the Equinox, the GMC Terrainreceives the same powertrain updates and isavailable in SL, SLE, SLT and Denali models.Over the decades, Chevrolet has introducedvarious trim levels and special packages tokeep consumers interested in its cash cow, thefull-size SUV. But none have been so focusedon performance as the new Rally Sport TruckSpecial Edition, or RST for short. Available onboth the Suburban and Tahoe, the RST packsTAHOE RSTTRAILER LIFE 2018 TOWING GUIDE 9

In addition, theRST will get cosmetic upgrades inspired by thesport-truck crowd, including exclusive 22-inchwheels with Bridgestone rubber, body-coloredgrille surround/door handles, and blackedout mirror caps, roof rails, window trim andbadging. Available upgrades for the Tahoe andSuburban RST include a Borla performance exhaust system and a Brembo brake package thatbrings 16.1-inch front rotors clamped by sixpiston calipers. Chevy estimates the RST (whenapplied to the smaller Tahoe, we’re guessing)can reach 60 MPH in under six seconds.Like its close cousin, the Enclave, the ChevyTraverse gets its fair share of updates thisyear. A new body has been sculpted to moreclosely resemble the Tahoe and Suburban, andit gets the 310-horsepower, 3.6-liter V-6 engineand nine-speed automatic, front-wheel driveor AWD. There are some notable differences, however; the Traverse is offered in several trimlevels including LS, LT (cloth and leather) andPremier, as well as the new RS and High Country models, the former of which is availablewith a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. Theupscale High Country features premium content and technology, including unique interiortrim with Loft Brown leather appointments andfaux-suede microfiber accents, 20-inch polished wheels, High Country badging, D-Opticheadlamps, standard twin-clutch AWD andpower-fold third-row seats. Standard featuresacross the lineup include active aero shutters(for improved aerodynamics), tri-zone climatecontrol, MyLink audio system with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto compatibility, and OnStar 4GLTE Wi-Fi hotspot.TUNDRA10 TRAILER LIFE 2018 TOWING GUIDETRAVERSETOYOTAFor 2018, Toyota has made some comparatively small but important changes to its trucklineup. The full-size Tundra is now a V-8 onlywith a choice of Double Cab or Crew Max configurations; a regular cab model is no longeroffered. The S, SR-5 and Platinum modelsreceive minor styling updates, and a new TRDSport package gets its own look with a bodycolor surround for the honeycomb-style grille,20-inch silver-painted aluminum alloy wheelswith black accents, and color-keyed mirrors, bumpers and hood scoop. More importantly,Toyota Safety Sense-P (TSS-P) is now standardacross the Tundra lineup. It includes a PreCollision System with Pedestrian Detectionfunction, Lane Departure Alert, Dynamic RadarCruise Control and Automatic High Beams.TSS-P uses millimeter-wave radar and a monocular camera sensor designed to help detecta preceding pedestrian or vehicle. Once apedestrian or vehicle is detected in front of theTundra, TSS-P can automatically apply brakingif necessary to help mitigate or avoid collisionsin certain conditions. The midsize Tacoma is essentially unchanged for 2018, save for the addition ofTSS-P in this model as well. q

2018 TOW GUIDE - tow ratings website.indd 1/2/18 10:20 AM - 12 -(Cyan)(Magenta)(Yellow)(BlacK)HOW TO USE THIS GUIDEMatching new tow vehicles with traveltrailers and fifth-wheels for safe andreliable towing is what this guide isall about. If you own or are considering buyinga particular trailer, the guide can help you discover the 2018 vehicles that are rated to tow it.You can also start with the tow vehicle and usethe guide to determine the maximum trailerweight when shopping for a new or used trailer. Many tow-vehicle models come in a varietyof configurations. Cab sizes, bed lengths, engine types, transmissions and axle ratios area few key components that affect tow ratings.Other components such as wheels, tires, fluidcoolers and suspension equipment factor in aswell. Some options change rigidity or torque, while others impact gross vehicle weight andtherefore affect the towing capacity. This year’s guide lists nearly 1,000 vehiclemodels in alphabetical order, organized bymodel type and configuration. Some modelsare offered in a large number of configurations.Ford’s F-150, for example, has more than 80separate listings. We make every effort to keep12 TRAILER LIFE 2018 TOWING GUIDEthe guide as consistent and concise as possible, but we still need to use unique footnotes toaccurately explain the distinctions specified bymanufacturers in their company towing guides.Note that manufacturers occasionally makemidyear specification changes, so before signing on the dotted line, make sure to verify thecapabilities of the vehicle you’re purchasing. In most of the listings, a letter (or a letterand a number) identifies the equipment therating is based on (i.e., automatic or manualtransmission, gear ratio, towing package, etc.).The meaning for these is specified in the “Keyto Charts” legend on the opposite page. If thereis no letter after the rating, only one rating isavailable. Footnotes can be found below thelast listing for the model or manufacturer.Supported by SAE towing standards andrigorous real-world testing, today’s tow vehicles really can perform as advertised whenproperly configured and equipped, but it neverhurts to buy a vehicle that can go above andbeyond your intended use.
