What is ErP?The ErP Directive, which is a new regulationset by the European Union, is designed to driveimprovements in the efficiency and performance ofheating and hot water products. Its purpose is toensure that end users are aware of the level of energyefficiency inherent within their appliances. As such,the Directive will help improve the overall efficiencyof the housing stock, while enabling homeowners toreduce their energy bills. The ErP regulations coverboilers, combination boilers, heat pumps and otherheating appliances up to 400kW.What is Energy Labelling?The Energy Labelling involves a label which we arefamiliar with today on washing machines andtelevisions at the point of sale. The Energy Labellingregulations introduce Europe-wide energy labellingrequirements for boilers, combination boilers,water heaters and other heating products up to70kW and hot water cylinders under 500 litres.6
ModelnameProduct aximumheatingoutputHow will the labelling scheme work?The new Energy Labelling Directive will introducenew efficiency classes from A to G alongsidethe existing SEDBUK rating for boilers in thedomestic and light commercial sectors.Most condensing boilers will fall within theA band, which requires them to achieve morethan 90% seasonal efficiency, while renewabletechnologies such as heat pumps will likelybe in the A or A bands (depending onflow temperature).7
What about systems that containdifferent products?In these circumstances, there is a responsibility toprovide a package label when combining a heatingappliance with a temperature control and/or solardevice, cylinder or a supplementary heatingappliance (for example, a two-boiler cascade witha combined total output of under 70kW).The person who puts that package together willneed to produce a package document known asa fiche (data table) and label that provides thecombined energy efficiency rating rather than ratingsof each individual component.For example, this could be the merchant’sresponsibility if they supply a complete packageunder one part number or the installer if theitems are bought individually under separatepart numbers.In either circumstance, Worcester will provide anonline tool that makes calculating the overallpackage efficiency of a Worcester system effortless.What about controls?The ErP Directive covers all products thatconsume energy, such as boilers, heat pumps,solar thermal etc. It also includes controls,which are defined using ‘classes’. These runfrom Class I (a simple on/off room stat) throughto Class VIII (multi-sensor room control for usewith modulating heating appliances).Each control class equates to a certain percentageuplift in system efficiency e.g. a class III weathersensor and room thermostat will add 1.5%efficiency to the heating system. Details of thecontrols class for each Worcester control can befound on pages 30-33.8

Flue terminal positioningAll measurements in millimetresConventional 6Note All measurements are the minimum clearances required. Terminals must be positioned so as to avoid combustionproducts entering the building. In spite of the dimensionsgiven here, the terminal must not be closer than 300mm tocombustible material. In the case of a thatched roof, thisdimension should be doubled. Terminals must be positioned so that products of combustiondo not enter or accumulate around the building. Terminals must be at least 1.8 metres from an oil storage tankunless a wall with at least 30 minutes fire resistance, whichextends 300mm wider and higher than the tank, is installed.Key to illustration101.600mm distance to a boundary, unless it will cause anuisance.
