FACULTY SALARIES – FALL 2004NKU CUPA Data ComparedTo Published National DataMay 2005

Fall 2004 NKU Faculty Salaries ComparedTo Fall 2004 Published CUPA DataIn the fall 2004 Northern Kentucky University was among 813 four-yearcolleges and universities that participated in the National Faculty Salary Surveyconducted annually by the College and University Personnel Association(CUPA). Included in this year’s survey are 720 schools that also participated infall 2003. Participating schools are in the Carnegie Foundation’s classificationsof Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral institutions along with a small number ofspecialized schools. Not among the CUPA participants are research universities.CUPA publishes the national data for all participants. The national reportpresents data for all reporting institutions, for all private institutions, and for allpublic institutions. Additional breakouts for public institutions group schools withcollective bargaining contracts and those without. This summary draws from the data for all public institutions and reflectsthe salaries of 124,995 faculty. CUPA collects the following aggregate salarydata on faculty in each discipline that is part of the survey. These data elementsapply to each academic rank from instructor through full professor. Lecturers andvisiting faculty are excluded. The elements are: minimum salary, maximumsalary, average salary, and number of people reported. No data related to yearsin rank or to gender are reported. Only faculty for whom teaching/researchaccount for more than 50 percent of their duties are reported. Stipends areexcluded from the salary data. And, department chairs and other twelve monthfaculty are not included. The report for fall 2004 includes data for 330 public institutions of which184 (56%) are Master’s level schools. Of the total public schools, 219 (66%) donot have collective bargaining agreements. This percentage has beenreasonably consistent over the years. In a comparison of data among schools participating in both the 2003 and2004, surveys CUPA reports an average increase of 3.1% at all publicinstitutions. At Master’s level universities the average is 3.0%. NorthernKentucky University shows an increase of 1.6%.Northern’s percentage increase from CUPA data, however, is not a goodreflection of the actual percentage change in the University’s faculty salaries.Between fall 2003 and fall 2004, NKU had a shift of the mix among the tenuretrack academic ranks reported to CUPA. The percentage of full and associateprofessors declined while the percentage of assistant professors increased, notan unexpected change with the growth in the number of new tenure trackpositions. Nationally, the percentage of faculty in each tenure track rank isessentially stable across the two years. A better descriptor for Northern

Kentucky University is the 3.0 % increase shown in AAUP data. That figurecompares salaries of the same people across the two years. The fall 2004 data show that the University’s nine-month faculty salaries, excluding faculty in the Chase College of Law are at 96% of the CUPA average.CUPA uses federal Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) codes tocategorize faculty disciplines. CUPA has opened up its report process toaccepting data on any of the 332 disciplines covered by CIP codes at the fourdigit level. While this new collection practice allows for a greater level ofspecificity, it also means for some disciplines a rather comparatively smallnumber of faculty and institutions in the national counts. The survey began collecting salary data on law faculty only in 1998.Chase College of Law faculty, therefore, are not part of the University averagesin this report. Since the beginning of CUPA benchmarking on faculty salaries in1989, NKU’s use of CUPA data has focused on faculty in the colleges withundergraduate and graduate programs. Tables 18 - 20, nonetheless, presentChase College of Law salaries in comparison with the published data for 36participating institutions that reported law school salaries on 907 faculty. Fromthe list of participating institutions in the CUPA report’s appendix, there is no wayto determine which reported law salaries and which have ABA accreditation.Similarly, CUPA does not provide a means to identify any disciplines or schoolsthat have specific programs accredited.Although data reported to CUPA does not include faculty in developmentaldisciplines who hold the lecturer rank, since the beginning of NKU’s CUPAbenchmarking, internal reports have included those faculty with comparisons tothe instructor’s rank in their respective academic disciplines. They appear in theoverall University tables.Three basic tables comprise each section of the report. These tablesrepeat with aggregate University data and in individual sections with data foreach college. There is an additional section for developmental programs. Eachtable presents data by academic rank within CIP discipline. The first table showsthe average faculty salary by rank and the number of people reported for therank. The second table uses the same rank within discipline organization toshow the discipline as a percentage of average salaries reported by CUPA forthe discipline. The third table relates the dollars required for the discipline atNKU to attain parity with CUPA, if the discipline is below the CUPA average. For disciplines at or above the average, a “0” difference shows. In the sectionwith aggregate university-wide data, Table 5 presents both the NKU average andthe CUPA national average salaries. The CUPA all rank discipline means and the averages for the professor, associate, and assistant (tenure track) ranks are weighted to the distribution of

faculty in those ranks at Northern Kentucky University. For example, while thenational CUPA report will have data for faculty in the associate professor rank, ifthe discipline at NKU doesn’t have anyone in the rank, that rank is not used tocalculate the all rank average at NKU. Each rank with NKU faculty is alsoweighted by the rank’s proportion of faculty at Northern. The following table provides a reference to the tables in this report thatshow University-wide data and data for the colleges. Note, again, that facultyfrom the Chase College of Law are not included in the University-wide data table. The PDF version of this report has point-and-click links to the tablesthrough the bookmarks in the left frame of the computer screen.Table of Report ContentsUniversityWideCollege ofArts &SciencesCollege ofBusinessCollege ofEducationCollege ofProfessionalStudiesChaseCollegeof LawDevelopmentalProgramsComparison ofDisciplinePercentageDistributions toCollege AverageTable1NKU FacultySalary Data, Fall2004Table 2Table 6Table 9Table 12Table 15Table 18Table 21NKU FacultySalaries asPercent ofNational CUPAAverageTable 3Table 7Table 10Table 13Table 16Table 19Table 22Estimated Dollarsby Discipline toAttain CUPAAverageTable 4Table 8Table 11Table 14Table 17Table 20Table 23NKU Faculty Databy Discipline andCUPA Data byDisciplineTable 5As a brief summary of Northern’s faculty in each of the colleges - with theexception of Chase College of Law for which there is only one discipline - Table 1relates the high and low percentages for NKU’s tenured/tenure track faculty inrelation to CUPA averages, and the college’s average and median.

The survey began collecting salary data on law faculty only in 1998. Chase College of Law faculty, therefore, are not part of the University averages in this report. Since the beginning of CUPA benchmarking on faculty salaries in 1989, NKU's use of CUPA data has focused on faculty in the colleges with undergraduate and graduate programs.
