ABOUT THE FIVE COLLEGES OF OHIOJURIED STUDENT BIENNIALThe Five Colleges of Ohio, Inc., is aconsortium of five liberal arts colleges inOhio: Denison University, Granville;Kenyon College, Gambier; Oberlin College,Oberlin; Ohio Wesleyan University,Delaware; and The College of Wooster,Wooster. The Five Colleges of Ohio wasincorporated in 1995, although discussionsabout the creation of a consortial librarysystem began several years earlier. Accordingto the organization’s statement of purpose:JUROR’S STATEMENTThe Five Colleges of Ohio Juried StudentBiennial entries impressed me withsome very strong traditional imageryand methods, particularly in portraiture, while also offering a spicy soupçon ofcontemporary engagements such as thegraphic novel format, idiosyncratic spatialstructures and psychological/fantasynarrative. The range of three-dimensionalmedia included ambitious and apparentlywell-crafted works. I say apparently, because judging from digital images is notan easy task, and judging such work in thismanner is perhaps the most difficult. I wasnecessarily influenced by the quality of theimages themselves, which covered a widerange. However, craftsmanship, structure, and texture were sometimes difficultto evaluate. That said, it remains that we must allask ourselves what makes a particular workstand out. For me, it is often a conceptualrealization through technical skills—anidea and its execution coming togetherin a special way—that makes a workexceptional. In the process of selectingthe award-winning pieces, I looked for aprecise and spirited vision that succeededon several levels.I appreciate the honor of being invitedby The College of Wooster Art Museum toreview the student work in this exhibitionand hope that this selection encouragesand inspires both the artists and theiraudiences. This is a show to be proud of,and I wish all participants much successin their careers. The Five Colleges of Ohioconsortium was founded in orderto foster closer cooperation andunderstanding, coordinate operatingfunctions and administrative services, develop collaborative academicprograms and resource sharing, and enhance quality . . .Sussel GalleryJacqueline S. Nathan received a BA inArt from Northern Illinois University, andan MA in Community Arts Managementfrom the University of Illinois at Springfield. She has been the Gallery Director atBowling Green State University since 1985.Burton D. Morgan GalleryA variety of cross-campus collaborations, including the Five Colleges of Ohio JuriedStudent Biennial, have been developed sincethe consortium’s inception. The College ofWooster Art Museum initiated the StudentBiennial in 2001, and its goals are to providestudents with an opportunity to enter aprofessionally juried exhibition and toexperience the work of their peers.Students currently enrolled in theFive Colleges may submit up to two worksto the Biennial. Submissions are thenreviewed by a curator, gallery director, orartist/teacher who selects both the exhibitionand award winners. The three previous Biennial jurorshave been Don Harvey, artist and emeritusprofessor of art, The University of Akron,2001; Susan Channing, former director ofSPACES Gallery, Cleveland, 2003; and MaryJo Bole, professor of art, The Ohio StateUniversity, 2006. (The Biennial was on hiatusin 2005 because of a scheduling conflict atWooster.) The juror for the 2008 Biennial isJacqueline S. Nathan, gallery director,Bowling Green State University, BowlingGreen, OH.There were 181 entries by 103 students in2008, with 51 works by 46 students selectedfor the exhibition. The seven award winnersinclude Ryan Hunter, Kenyon College, Bestof Show, and six Juror’s Award recipients—Aspen Emily Golann, Kenyon College,Nathalie VanBalen, Denison University, andJulia V. Hendrickson, Emma Powell, MarkSchneider, and Katharine Tatum, The Collegeof Wooster.Wooster has had the pleasure of hostingfour Student Biennials thus far; and in 2010,The Five Colleges of Ohio Juried StudentBiennial will take place at the Richard M. RossArt Museum, Ohio Wesleyan University.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSIt is with great anticipation and enthusiasmthat the staff of The College of Wooster ArtMuseum looks forward to The Five Collegesof Ohio Juried Student Biennial. There are several reasons for thisanticipation, with two being the energy andcomplexity of concept that we see in thework of these young artists. The other is thatDoug McGlumphy, preparator at The Collegeof Wooster Art Museum, developed the ideafor this multi-campus juried exhibition. Havingexperienced a similar exhibition opportunity asan undergraduate at Washington and JeffersonCollege in Washington, PA, Doug thought thatthe Five Colleges consortium could providethe organizing principle for a juried exhibitionat Wooster. We thank Doug not only for hissuggestion, but also for the sensitive andbeautiful installations in the Sussel Gallery andthe Burton D. Morgan Gallery. We also thankthe faculty and staff in the art departments ateach of the Five Colleges for facilitating thisexhibition on their respective campuses everyother year.Joyce Fuell, Museum AdministrativeCoordinator, handles the submissions to theBiennial. With the move to digital submissionsin 2008, her involvement in the exhibitionincreased exponentially, and we appreciateher many critical contributions. We also thank The Burton D. MorganFoundation, Hudson, OH, for a grant thatallowed for the printing of this brochure, the first such documentation of The FiveColleges Student Biennial. Exhibitionscome and go, but exhibition brochuresare lasting documents. To the student artists in this exhibition, please accept our heartfelt congratulations. We appreciate your many points of view, and thank you for sharing your work with awider audience.Kitty McManus ZurkoDirector/CuratorThe College of WoosterArt Museum2008 Five Colleges of OhioJuried Student BiennialSussel Gallery and the Burton D.
