Title of the projectProject Cod/CycleSpeaker (s)PositionOrganizationAddressTel/FaxMultistage project for educational courses formedical personnel and target communities inlife saving and life support.B-089-L0Prof. Dr. Zeinab SonboulProject ManagerFaculty of MedicineMansoura UniversityMob. 0106720083In the past few years, there has been a great evolution in the concept andscope of life support in Egypt with a new concept of involvement of nonmedical community individuals in such activity. Those individuals werefound to be a valid group of training and for providing basic life supportmaneuvers (BLS) as well as a minimum level of trauma life support to dealwith victims in an accident scene.Life support unit, a specialized unit in anesthesia and surgical intensivecare department in Mansoura university has been involved deeply in theactivity of life support on a wide scale including adult advanced life support, pediatric advanced life support, trauma life support, disaster medicine and ofcourse, basic life support. One of the best target groups for BLS training are the universitystudents, with a good level of culture, good attitude toward knowledgeacquisition and wide spread dissemination in different community areas aftergraduation. An excellent chance to invade this target group emerged through aHEEPF funded project. " Multi stage project for educational courses formedical personnel and target communities in life saving and life support "(B-089-LO).A harmony of complementation of the life support unit academicresources and the HEEPF funding resources has generated a chance ofspreading the vital knowledge and skills into more than 2000 of Mansourauniversity students in less than one year, and still going on.We are raised the level of our hopes and expectations to disseminate thisculture as integral part of the academic courses for all the students inMansoura university.١٨

Title of the projectTeaching Community Oriented PrimaryCare: Can it Change Students' Attitude andPerformanceProject Cod/CycleSpeaker (s)PositionOrganizationAddressTel/FaxA-030-T0Prof. Dr. Amal El BadawyZainab SonboulProject ManagerFaculty of MedicineZagazig UniversityMob. 0101412042OBJECTIVES The objective of teaching Community Oriented Primary care (COPC)was to allow the students to understand and acquire the attitude and skills needed in orderto be able to apply the principles of public health in the community.METHODOLOGYStudents of 4th year medical faculty were divided into 4 groups (about 200 students)during their clinical rotation. Every group spends 2 months in the department ofCommunity Medicine, during which they stay for the first three weeks in theoretical andpractical sessions. This was followed by visits to the health care units in SharkyiaGovernorate to collect data about the community health problems and to identify andprioritize the commonest ones. Every five students developed an intervention and carry itout in the field for the control of a health problem that was identified to be important andfeasible for control. By the end of their rotation, every twenty students submit a reportand deliver a presentation that covers all their work in the field.RESULTSIn the academic year 2004-2005, more 700 students had passed this training module. They visited 36 primary health care units, carried out 144 interventions, submitted 36reports and delivered 36 presentations. The commonest problems that were identified andan intervention was developed for their control were: Gastroenteritis, Upper respiratorytract infection, Food borne Parasitic Infections, Schistosomiasis, Diabetes, Hypertension,Hepatitis, Renal affection, Skin diseases, Anemia with pregnancy and among preschoolchildren, and Eye infections. The interventions were in the form of Health Education Session and were preceded andfollowed by Pre and Post test. Whenever possible this was associated by screening in thecase of hypertension, diabetes, parasitic infections and anemia.A Pre-Post test was answered by the students and by the end of their rotation they wereasked to evaluate the whole module and give their feedback about their impact.Upon students request, a campaign in one of the villages (Bordein) was carried out, where 18 students implemented all what they have learned during their study.According to our evaluation students were very much satisfied and among the thingsthey said they learned for the first time: getting in contact with the community andidentification of its health problems, practicing what they learned in the real situation, working in team and acquiring communication skills, etc.CONCLUSIONAccording to the previous findings, the application of COPC as a teaching method provedto be effective. Nevertheless, the real impact will be identified only after the graduationof these students and assessment of their work in the real practice.٢٠

Family Health Nurse In Egypt: Community PerceptionsMariam Haggag*Nadia Mahmoud**-Community Health Nursing Department, Faculty of Nursing Mansoura* andAlexandria** Universities.AbstractOver the last few decades, Egypt has made significant progress in many aspects ofprimary health care. Its programs for childhood immunization, Schistosomiasis control, family planning, and diarrheal disease control have yielded positive results. Despitetheir success, these programs have fragmented the delivery system into manyspecialized, vertical programs. In 2000, the Ministry of Health and Population (MOHP)adopted a new strategy to reform the health system in phases over a period of 15-20years. The strategy seeks to provide all Egyptians with access to better quality primarycare and preventive services. This new strategy aimed to integrate the provision ofservices around individuals and families, restructuring today's fragmented facilities into asystem of community-focused family health providers (Family Physician/ Family HealthNurse "FHN" ) to consolidate health gains , increase efficiency without sacrificing quality, and insure sustainability of services.
