homeCominG ParadeGrand Marshalnathaniel Grant, Jr., Mr. Alumni 2016Tri-County Alumni Chapter(Edgecombe, Nash, and Wilson, NC)Nathaniel Grant, Jr. known fondly to many as Nate Grant, Jr., is a trueand lifelong ambassador for Elizabeth City State University (ECSU). Mr.Grant graduated from ECSU in 1968 with a Bachelor of Science degree inHealth and Physical Education. He earned a Master’s degree in HealthEducation at Southern Connecticut State College, as well as a Sixth YearCertificate in Supervision and Administration.Mr. Grant had a long and distinguished career as an educator. He retiredafter 33 years as a teacher and principal at Bunker Hill ElementarySchool in Waterbury, Connecticut. Throughout, he was notably involvedwith ECSU and its National Alumni Association. He is currently vice-chairof the alumni association board.Mr. Grant founded ECSU’s New England Alumni Chapter, where he was president until 1999.When he returned to North Carolina, he reorganized the Tri-County Alumni Chapter in Rocky Mount andhas been president of that chapter since 2000. Over the years, he has often been involved in studentrecruitment activities for the university.Mr. Grant is also a member of the Viking Varsity Club and a generous financial supporter of ECSUathletics. Each year, he is a key participant in the planning for the Down East Viking Football Classicin Rocky Mount. Wear comfortable shoes and appropriate clothing. With limited parking, walking is the preferredway to get to most of the events on campus.2. If in a group, have a designated meeting point or a re-unification plan in case of emergency.3. If you intend to consume alcohol and can legally do so (age 21 and at a permitted event), make sure youhave a designated driver and a way to safely return home.4. Use the “Buddy System.” When with friends at a party or event, agree to watch out for eachother and leave the event together.5. Always avoid walking alone in isolated areas, such as parking lots and taking shortcuts.6. Be aware of what is going on around you at all times. If you suspect you are being followed, indicate yoursuspicion by looking behind you. Change your direction or vary your speed. Call University Police fromyour cell phone. Do not confront anyone following you.7. If confronted by someone trying to victimize you, try to obtain a good physical description of the subject togive to the police.Property Safety1.
