SCNM shares Tempe with ArizonaState University, thereby providing our students with a richcollege atmosphere and an abundance of affordablehousing, research, and entertainment opportunities. Tempeis a great place to learn, live, work, and play.PhoenixTempe is part of the Greater Phoenix Metro area, one of thetop ten largest metropolitan areas in the United States. The“Valley of the Sun” has all the diversity of big-city life withoutthe big-city cost. Among these assets are flat terrain, simpletransportation routes, and a light-rail system. Not only is thetransportation system evolving, but the housingcommunities provide comfortable, affordable homes fornew and longtime residents.With 300 days of sunshine each year, the Phoenix Metro areais a haven for outdoor enthusiasts. SCNM is a highly respected sourceof information in the natural healthcare field. SCNM’sfaculty, staff, and administrators collaborate to deliver abold, innovative, and dynamic education. Those who spendtime on campus know that SCNM’s sense of communitymakes these goals a reality.The SCNM Community Commons, a LEED platinumcertified building, features the integrative Neil RiordanCenter for Regenerative Medicine, teaching kitchen, yogastudio, a medical library, Bourneman Board Room with highdefinition teleconferencing, Thorne Auditorium, classrooms,18 group study/meeting rooms, weight and cardio room,student lounge, wellness rooms, café, and the SCNMMedicinary. The first building of its kind at any naturopathiccollege, the Commons engages the public as it reshapes theSCNM experience. The SCNM campus also generates cleanelectricity, provides shade, and reduces energy coststhrough the installation of solar-panel-covered structuresover 80% of all parking spaces. Abundant light, evidencebased design, and sustainable and non-toxic materialscreate an atmosphere that delights the eye as it inspireshealing, learning, and community engagement. The top-ofthe-line Steelcase furnishings are functional andenvironmentally sustainable, providing students, patients,and the public comfortable and ergonomically soundseating throughout the Community Commons.The academic buildings are well equipped to serve the needsof the community. SCNM classrooms, SCNM medicalfacilities, and the Community Commons are equipped withpresentation technology and wireless internet. In addition,computers are available for student use throughout theSCNM Library and at the SCNM Medical Center. To top it alloff, the beauty of the medicinal gardens creates anatmosphere for community learning, campus events, andmedical conferences. The gardens also provide botanicalsfor classroom instruction and lab experiences.Founded principally by naturopathic physicians Michael andKyle Cronin, SCNM is one of six recognized colleges ofnaturopathic medicine in the United States. It is also the firstmedical school in the Phoenix Metropolitan area.

The Neil Riordan Center for RegenerativeMedicine is located in a beautiful 6,200 square foot space onthe ground floor of the SCNM Community Commonsbuilding. Through patient care, research, and medicaleducation, Neil Riordan Center for Regenerative Medicinehelps to usher in a new era in the treatment of pain andchronic disease by: Developing innovative, safe, effective, and promisingpractices for patients suffering from pain Training the next generation of physicians skilled inregenerative medicine Building the foundation for in vitro and clinical researchin regenerative medicine to explore new treatments andexplicate their mechanisms of actionRic Scalzo Institute forBotanical ResearchThe Institute’s Mission is to explore traditional medicines atthe cellular, molecular, and cultural levels to create novelbotanical solutions that support People, Plants, and Planet.The Ric Scalzo Institute for Botanical Research, a state-ofthe-art molecular biology/phytochemistry laboratoryopened in the Spring of 2021. The Institute works incollaboration with the natural products industry,foundations, and other academic institutions and labs todevelop new products and improve existing botanicaltherapeutics through scientific exploration grounded inclinical and traditional herbalism’s rich history. The Institutehouses multiple laboratory facilities including a BiosafetyLevel 2 molecular and cellular biology laboratory withcell/virus culture capabilities, a compound isolationlaboratory, and a compound identification and quantificationfacility. Bioassay-guided characterization, purification, andisolation of botanicals is a proven process that our researchteam utilizes to achieve success in creating novel, evidencebased natural products.SCNM Medical CenterThe SCNM Medical Center is a fragrance-free facilityconsisting of natural and recycled building materials andnon-toxic paint. It is designed to support and enhancepatient care and student learning through indoor healingspaces.The SCNM Medical Center creates a clinical environmentunique to any naturopathic clinical setting. Hydrotherapy, acore modality in naturopathic medicine and an importantcomponent of European water spas, comprises nearly thirtypercent of the Center and includes a custom-designedsteam area, two saunas (far-infrared/radiant), and ahydrotherapy/color therapy suite. There are also two minorsurgery suites with high-definition video equipment forrecording or transmitting certain procedures, with patientconsent, for learning purposes. Intravenous therapies, whichcan be a prominent treatment method for many healthconditions, are provided in the IV Suite.Equipment andTechnologyIn addition to serving patients’ health needs, the SCNMMedical Center and Neil Riordan Center for RegenerativeMedicine are the on-campus training sites for naturopathicmedical students’ clinical training. Designed with videotechnology in each of the 7 classrooms and 37 exam rooms,the SCNM medical facilities support student learning in theclinical environment. Corporate sponsors donated large LCDmonitors to each classroom which enhance the physicians’ability to use online resources, display a patient’s electronichealth record (EHR), and closed-circuit observation of examrooms when appropriate. This technology allows studentsto gain immediate feedback from their attending physician.In addition, state-of-the-art medical equipment in each examroom was donated by Welch-Allyn. Naturopathic medicalstudent learning is supported through the Clinical ResourceCenter, a specialized clinical collection that is an extensionof the SCNM Library. Institutional Informationnaturopathic modalities including acupuncture, botanicalmedicine, nutrition, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, andenvironmental, physical, and mind-body medicine. TheSCNM Library subscribes to electronic books, journals, andspecialized medical, naturopathic, and nutrition databasesthat supplement the on-campus print resources.SCNM was the first naturopathic medical school toimplement an EHR system in 2010. The utilization of EHRincreases medical research opportunities and enhancespatient benefits through electronic record keeping andcommunication among the SCNM Medical Facilityphysicians and other healthcare providers. SCNM recentlyupdated the system to eClinicalWorks. This new systemsupports a patient portal and telemedicine.SCNM LaboratoryThe SCNM Medical Center Laboratory is a CLIA moderatecomplexity laboratory and is accredited by COLA. Studentsare required to participate in laboratory posts in which theygain a finer understanding of laboratory diagnostic tests, aswell as OSHA and CLIA standards. While on laboratory post,naturopathic medical students have the opportunity tocollect and prepare samples and perform CLIA-waivedtesting.While some laboratory testing is done on site, the SCNMMedical Center laboratory also contracts with LaboratoryCorporation of America (LabCorp) and Sonora QuestLaboratories for standard diagnostic tests. The laboratoryutilizes 15 additional specialty labs for testing not availableat LabCorp or Sonora Quest.SCNM MedicinaryThe SCNM Medicinary, located in the CommunityCommons, is Arizona’s largest natural medicinary with thelargest inventory of homeopathic medicines and botanicaltinctures in Arizona. Naturopathic medical students arerequired to complete a one-credit course in which they learnabout how the SCNM Medicinary operates. Covered topicsinclude choosing high-quality supplements, safety andprescribing of botanical tinctures, inventory management,providing customer service, and more. The Medicinaryserves the patients of in-house physicians, providers acrossthe Greater Phoenix area, and the general public.P a g e 8 2021-2022 Course CatalogNaturopathic ExtendedSite Community ClinicsNaturopathic Medicine students may also receive theirclinical training at community clinics. These clinics givestudents unique opportunities to provide treatment andgain skills and experience in a community healthcaresetting and enhance their cultural competence workingwith diverse patient populations. Treatments often includenutritional intervention, clinical nutrition, botanicalmedicine, physical medicine, acupuncture, homeopathy,and prescription medicines when necessary.
