Daffodil Lodge NewsAug./Sept. 2022 Page 2Exalted Ruler’s MessageHello Members of Puyallup Lodge #1450.As I indicated in my last message there is a very special announcement that I am nowable to share. The Lodge applied for and has been awarded a grant to replace the roof on our building! We are currently working on the paperwork from Grand Lodge as well as theState of Washington to enable the work to start. More updates will be sent as we move forward withthe project. I know that some of you might miss the indoor water features that have been a part ofour leaking roof for years. Thanks to all that attended our Centennial celebration on June 11. For those of you who did not attendyou really missed out on good food, music, dancing and fellowship. There were approximately 125 peoplein attendance. As I said in my last message the key to our success is very much dependent on thesupport of our members coming down to participate in the events we do, dinners we provide andattending the meeting on Tuesday nights. It has not gone unnoticed that we are averaging well over 20members at our Lodge meetings and that attendance at the Friday dinners is increasing.I want to thank the volunteers that have been stepping up and coming down to help with what we do atthe Lodge.Currently we need members that have some free time, especially during the weekday hours, that could come down and watch the Lodge to allow it to be open more for the swimmingpool. You don’t have to be a lifeguard, just be present and watch the pool when membersand their guests want to use it.If you are willing to help, please contact me, the Office, orLeading Knight John Anderson 253 948 6511.Fraternally, Steve Scholz253-224-2237 Cell phone, feel free to call me if you have questions.POOL OPENWelcome to our new members: June: Aimee Hickman, Dale Fletcher, Laurie Barajas, Dustin Stemp, Ben JackowskiMay: Michael Young, Erica Iles, Cherrie Hudson, Steve Crossley, Krista Neils, Peter Sabban, Danielle Nordstrom,Mike Nordstrom, Michelle Zimmerman, Joshua Dorman-McMillanElected Officers (Officers For 2022-2023)Exalted RulerLeading KnightLoyal KnightLecturing KnightSecretaryTreasurerSteve ScholzJohn AndersonPam FullerJeremie NeilsenJessie FinleyGeorge JacquishAppointed OfficerEsquire Randy PowellChaplain Ron GagneTyler Jeff RidleyInner GuardMelissa BellingerDues were due April 1, 2022 for the 2022-23Lodge year. Daffodil Lodge NewsAug./Sept. 2022 Page 6“Our Kids”Washington Elks Therapy Program for Children, Inc.State Major Project since 1954Introducing. George! George is another amazing kid who has been receiving home-based OccupationalTherapy thanks to the wonderful generosity of those supporting the Washington Elks Therapy Program forChildren. Here is what George’s family would like you to know:George is an 8 year old boy who happens to have Down syndrome. He has 3 older brothers, and two lovingparents. Only one thing comes easy to George and that’s sharing love and kindness. Everything else takes extra effort. Tasks typical people take for granted like speaking, walking, and eating have all been a challengefor George. His family is inspired by his adaptations, persistence and always spirited presence in how he approaches life.George loves camping, chicken nuggets, ice cream and time with his Elks therapist. Inspired by the SesameStreet character, he lovingly refers to his therapist as “Mr. Noodle.” Their time spent together is a weeklyhighlight. With his Elks therapist, George loves to play “missions” and “super hero - stop go”. These aregames that George’s Occupational Therapist has created to playfully engage him in working towards his OTgoals. Time with his Elks therapist has not only been good for George; his parents have gained perspective inhow to engage along with George in a playful way while helping him meet his own needs. Some of George’s OT goals have included: staying active with different types of exercise to help his body andmind be able to do what he wants or is expected to do, staying engaged with another while trying somethingnew, putting things away after he’s through with them, spreading butter on toast, and learning how to cleana table. Because of George’s challenges, which include responding effectively to the information his sensesare bringing in, it’s been important to always build in opportunities for George to engage in activities thathelp him be alert but not overstimulated, like swinging. George’s therapist builds off his interests, making activities meaningful to him by following George’s lead as much as possible, so he can gain confidence in hisability to impact his world. All of our goals are working towards a long-term vision of George being as in charge of his own life as possible, while fully enjoying all the relationships that he brings his delightful self to.

These three pioneermembers applied to their own Lodge for a demit to join a lodge “under dispensation” and then started to workto make up a list of possible Charter Members.A list of about 90 names was submitted to the Grand Lodge. Grand Exalted Ruler Wm. Mountain, with theco-operation of this District Deputy from Chehalis, appointed the famous “COMMITTEE OFTHIRTEEN’ to proceed with the organization. Dana T. Robinson was appointed Chairman. It issignificant that “13” was the exact number of men calling themselves the “Jolly Corks” that originated theOrder of Elks.June 10th, 1922 became not only the date of the institution of the Lodge, it became the date of the election ofthe first crew of officers, their installation into office, and the initiation of the first class of candidates. Duringthe first year, from June 10, 1922 to March 31st, 1923, 353 men became members of the Lodge, recruitedfrom the entire valley. Every possible activity was engaged in during that first year and many years immediately following. The foundation was laid for the Charitable activities that haveremained one of the principal features of this Lodge, as well as every Elks Lodge. Long before the presentso-called “Welfare Departments” were ever heard of, it was the ELKS that provided for most of the cases ofreal need in every locality where we were represented. In the first year or two the Purple Bubble Ball was started and has continued as a source of revenue forthe charitable activities. These dances, held in the old Civic Auditorium at the time, became the leading socialevent in the city. Within a few years, because of its popularity, it was moved to the RedondoPavilion. It remains today as a source of revenue for helping to create the Christmas Baskets for those in needin our area.
