Whenthe teacher asked, “What areyou going to be when you growup?” I responded, “A nurse!” Iwent to nursing school straightJill Dapremontout of high school, and receivedmy Bachelor of Science degreefrom Dillard University in New Orleans, Louisiana in 1983.I loved interacting with patients as a certified critical carenurse, working mainly telemetry. Then, I received mymaster’s (1987) in Nursing from Louisiana State UniversityHealth Science Center in New Orleans. Once I completedmy master’s degree, I switched my focus to work as anAdvance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN), Clinical NurseSpecialist (CNS) in Mental Health Nursing from 1996until 2009. I also taught for thirteen years at DelgadoCommunity College Charity School of Nursing where I wasan Associate Professor. Then came the storm. I evacuated New Orleans, LAand relocated to Memphis, TN in August 2005, becauseof the devastating effects of hurricane Katrina. Whenhurricane Katrina swept across the gulf coast, I had juststarted my dissertation process and had two daughtersin school, one in high school and the other in college. Ilost everything during the storm and came to Memphiswith no more than a disc that contained my dissertationproposal. Nevertheless, there was a bright side. Whiletrying to get my life resettled in Memphis to finish mydoctorate, every step of the way I met nurses who wereactively involved in TNA and a community that was willingto help me in my journey. I am eternally grateful andreceived my doctorate degree from Argosy Universityin (2008). Also, through many blessings and favors, Iwas able to continue my passion in nursing education atthe University of Memphis (UOM) Loewenberg Collegeof Nursing (LCON) where I have now been for twelveTNA &TSNAJOINT ANNUAL CONFERENCEEmbassy Suites - SE MurfreesboroADVOCACY IN ACTIONVisit TNA’s Conference Site at:https://tna.societyconference.com/v2/The Tennessee Nurses Association and the TennesseeStudent Nurses Association presents the 2018 TNA & TSNAJoint Conference, Advocacy in Action. Page 2Tennessee NurseI Am TNA continued from page 1years. I have achieved Tenure, served as the Presidentof Sigma, Beta Theta at Large Chapter (2013-2015) andLCON Faculty Senate representative 2013 until present.Through interactions and encouragement from TNAmembers, I joined the American Nurses Association (ANA)and Tennessee Nurses Association in 2015.I believe it is important to be a part of yourprofessional organization because the profession needsyour nursing expertise, physical and mental capital. Inaddition, I believe you should not just join an organizationfor membership only, but also become active! So, in2016 I was elected to the TNA District 1 NominatingCommittee. Since being elected to serve on the TNADistrict 1 board, I have had the opportunity to meetsome very motivated and dedicated TNA members. Thesemembers are movers and shakers! They are involved inadvocating for the nursing profession, protecting theNursing Practice Act and monitoring legislation thatinfluences nursing. Interacting with the District 1 boardSeptember, October, November 2018has motivated me to stay involved with TNA. I wantto continue to stay involved, because I feel that I ammaking a difference in my profession, in my region, andin my district. So, since becoming a board member in2016, I have also served on a TNA ad hoc committee inpartnership with the League of Women Voters to have a“Meet and Greet” for political candidates. I was able tohear from candidates as they spoke of their positionson issues affecting the nursing profession. This addedanother opportunity for me to become more aware ofTennessee nursing concerns. In addition to professionalgrowth, networking, and being able to advocate for theprofession, the benefits for joining TNA also includes:1) discounts on courses; 2) free monthly associationcommunications and journals and 3) Legislative updates.I encourage all nurses to join TNA/ANA and becomeactive because this all-encompassing network providedthe support I needed to finish my doctorate and restartmy career. Now, I AM TNA and can provide the samesupport to others while making a difference in mycommunity. The Tennessee Nurse is the official publication of theTennessee Nurses Foundation, 545 Mainstream Drive, Suite 405,Nashville, TN 37228-1296Phone: 615/254-0350 Fax: 615/254-0303Email: tnf@tnaonline.orgPublished exclusively by theTennessee Nurses Foundation and theArthur L. September, October, November 2018Tennessee NursePage 3From the Executive DirectorMerriam-Websterdefinesa coalition as an alliance forcombined action. It is notpossible for any associationto achieve its goals and do allthat it needs to do on behalfof its members without joininga number of coalitions. TNAhas been active in severalcoalitions related to achievingour legislative goals and ourgoals related to healthcare forall Tennesseans. I would like tohighlight two of those coalitions.Tina Gerardi,MS, RN, CAEAccess to Care Coalition:The Future of Nursing: Campaign for Action istransforming health care through nursing and buildinga healthier America. Backed by AARP Foundation,AARP, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, the Campaign is working in every state to mobilizenurses, health providers, consumers, educators, andbusinesses to improve health by strengthening nursing onmultiple fronts. The goals of the Campaign are based onrecommendations from the Institute of Medicine’s Futureof Nursing report, with its broad focus on getting moreAmericans better access to high-quality, affordable healthcare when and where they need it.Tennessee is one of the states with laws that preventnurses, advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs),and other health professionals from practicing to the fullextent of their education, training, and certification. TNAwas invited to participate in a national meeting relatedto revising state laws to allow nurses to practice to thefull extent of their education and training. Through thiscoalition, TNA also participates in monthly national callsrelated to access to care.“Patients and families won’t get the care they need ifwe don’t take steps to maximize the use of all qualifiedhealth care providers,” says Susan Reinhard, RN, PhD,FAAN, senior vice president and director of the AARPPublic Policy Institute.AARP recognizes that “APRNs can provide consumersand their caregivers with access to convenient, costeffective, and high-quality care.” There are many whobenefit from AARP’s fight to break down the barriersthat restrict APRNs, including residents of rural and otherunderserved areas of the country, and older peoplewho need to receive care at home to continue livingindependently and stay out of costly nursing homes.Current laws in many states take precious time awayfrom patient care by making clinicians fill out unnecessarypaperwork or have agreements that do not benefitpatient care outcomes. The Campaign works with thesestates through a learning collaborative to modernize statelaws, rules and regulations, cut red tape, and eliminatecostly contracts. With the support of AARP, the Campaignworks to call on policymakers to put consumers first bysupporting policies that assure Americans can receivequality care whenever and wherever they need it.TNA is working with advanced practice organizationsin Tennessee to achieve these national goals in our state,to elevate all nursing practice, to assure that Tennesseanshave a choice in healthcare practitioners, and to assure thatTennesseans have access to a nurse wherever they need one.Safe Stars:Safe Stars is an initiative of the Program for InjuryPrevention in Youth Sports at Vanderbilt UniversityMedical Center and the Tennessee Department ofHealth. The “Safe Stars” program is the first of its kindin the country and recognizes youth sports leaguesand organizations throughout Tennessee for providingthe highest level of safety for their young athletes. SafeStars consists of three levels of achievement: gold, silver, and bronze, and involves implementation of policiesaround topics such as concussion, sudden cardiac arrest, weather safety, injury prevention and a positive culture.Safe Stars’ goal is to provide resources and opportunitiesfor every youth sports league to enhance their safetystandards. The criteria for achieving recognition as aSafe Stars league has been developed by a committee ofhealth professionals dedicated to reducing sports-relatedinjuries among youth. Some of the criteria for achieving “safe star” status are: Pre-participation Physical Examination (PPE)required Risk and safety information/policies relayed toparents/guardians All coaches complete additional health, safety andinjury prevention training All athletic equipment undergoes safety checks Healthcare professional on site for all games Healthcare professional on site for all practices All coaches CPR/AED certified On site tobacco policy / “Young Lungs at Play” Promote positive culture and standard ofexpectations regarding behaviorEarn 150/hr!Atlanta: Sep 15 & 16.Any Nurse Can Get Memphis: Oct 20 & 21Certified as a LegalNurse Consultant in or Anytime Onlineonly 2 Days.Register NOW!jurexnurse.comor call (901) 496-5447Memphis VA Medical Centerhas exciting career opportunities available forRegistered Nurses & Nurse PractitionersWe invite you to join our team, where every dayWe Proudly Serve Our Nation’s Heroes!TNA recognizes that Adverse Childhood Events havelasting impact on the lives of our children.
