PRESIDENT’S CORNERDo you know that YOU have a largerole in Hiway’s ongoing operations andin our long-term future? As a financialinstitution, everything we do is based onserving the needs of our membership. So in that sense, you have a role as a“customer”. But you aren’t really “just acustomer”—you’re much more than that.DAVE BODENHiway, like all credit unions, is a notPresident/CEOfor-profit financial cooperative. As such,we are not owned by any one individualor group of shareholders, but rather byall our members. As a member of Hiway, you ARE an ownerof the organization, and this isn’t just a “symbolic” concept. Acooperative organization is based on the idea that collaborationand participation by all the member-owners leads to benefitsfor everyone, and there are three key ways in which you cancontribute to Hiway’s shared success. The first way in which you can exercise your role as an ownerof Hiway is to help shape the Board of Directors. A cooperativeis a democratic organization in that each member-owner hasone vote for its leadership—the Board of Directors. Hiway isgoverned by nine members who serve as volunteers on the Boardof Directors, each serving a three-year term after which they canchoose to run again in the election as an incumbent. The Board ofDirectors election for 2017 has started, and all members age 18 orolder with 5 or more in a Savings Account can vote. The Boardnominating committee spends significant time and effort each yearputting together a great slate of new candidates to run alongsidethe incumbents. Again this year, there is a great group of peoplerunning for the Board. I encourage you to exercise your ownershiprights and vote. You can review the candidates and place your voteonline at hiway.org or via paper ballot. Ballots were mailed to alleligible voters on March 14. Voting is open through April 11.The second way in which you as a member-owner can participatein shaping Hiway’s future is to participate in local and nationalpolitical advocacy efforts. From time-to-time, it is important forall of us to contact our legislators and express our concern andsupport for the not-for-profit, cooperative credit union businessmodel and philosophy. The credit union income tax exemption, for example, may be an important issue during tax policy review.Advocacy supporting data privacy standards and responsibility formerchants who take credit and debit cards is another importantissue in protecting member-owner data—your personal data.Regulatory relief for member-owned, locally-focused institutionslike credit unions—institutions formed on the concept of providingtrusted service to all—is still another important issue. At Hiway, Iam looking to take a more active stance in letting you know whenthere are issues you should be aware of, and you can expect tohear from us periodically regarding opportunities where you canexercise your rights as owners to support the organization. It probably goes without saying, but the third and final way youcan help as a Hiway member-owner is to fully participate in thesuccess of the organization. What does this mean? Make Hiwayyour primary financial institution and take full advantage of ourproducts and services whenever possible. Be a vocal promoter ofHiway with colleagues, friends and family—encouraging themto give Hiway a try. We all benefit from a strong, progressive andsuccessful organization. As always, we thank you for your ongoingsupport!BUYING A HOME? PROTECT YOUR MOST IMPORTANT INVESTMENTAn unexpected disruption to your family’s income could quicklyderail your financial goals. Whether it’s a short-term disability, ajob loss or even the death of an income provider, it’s important toplan for these “just-in-case” scenarios. At the top of the protection list is your home—probably thebiggest and most important investment you’ll make during yourlifetime. To help cover your monthly mortgage payments, considerMortgage Payment Protection. What is Mortgage Payment Protection? This voluntary insurance helps make your mortgage paymentduring financially stressful times. It’s designed to give you time toget back on your feet after a job loss, disability or death. Why is it important? Because half of American households would feel thefinancial impact of the loss of their primary wage earner ina year or less; 40% within 6 months.1 6 in 10 Americans have no emergency fund to fall back on.2How Can Mortgage Payment Protection Help You? Keep you and your family in your home—especially duringa difficult time. Free up money you would have used for your mortgagepayments to pay other bills. Reduce the need to dip into your other investments such asyour retirement fund.Find Out MoreCall us or stop in and speak with a Real Estate Representative tosee if this coverage is right for you and your family.Mortgage Payment Protection is currently available for new Hiway Mortgage Loans and excludes existingloans. 1Facts from LIMRA, Sept 2015. 2BankRate Study, Jan 2015.
