A DISTINGUISHED PASTFounded in 1960, New College opened in 1964 as a private college whose students would comefrom all parts of the nation and whose faculty and curriculum would reflect the highest standards ofexcellence.New College attracted immediate anention for the nature and quality of its academic program. In 1967, when the rust students were graduated, the College won accreditation. Soon graduates beganto make their mark.s in chosen careers and in graduate and professional schools. As the College matured academically, inflationary pressures threatened its very life in the early1970s. After exploring various strategies for survival, the college administration and trustees proposedto the Board of Regents of the State University System of Florida a novel plan that allowed theinstitution to become a free-standing college within the University of South Florida, sharing thecampus with the University's regional campus academic program. Special action by the FloridaLegislature set the stage for this unique parmership to occur. New College was continued through acombination of support from the State and annual grants from the New College Foundation. Together, they enabled the College to remain small and to continue its distinctive program.Events, actWities, programs, and facilioo of r UfiWersiry of South Florida are av able to all without regardto race, color, sex, religion, national orip1, haruncap, or age as proviihd lry law and in accordance with UfiWersiry's respect for personal dignity.
